Depression: 5 Natural Treatment To Get Rid Of It

There is a wide range of remedies that are available to treat depression in young adults. While there is no proven way of treating depression, broadly there are three approaches that is psychological, medical and natural. The key is to know the cause of depression. Once the cause is known, a qualified professional decides the course of treatment.

Psychological Treatment: Psychological treatments revolve around talking with the patient and change the way he thinks. It equips an individual to cope up with stress, depression and conflicts.

The three most popular treatment approaches are CBT, IPT and MBCT:

  1. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is an approach where the behavioral pattern of the patient is analyzed and a certain change in behavior is suggested to deal with depression. CBT is a problem-solving approach where a psychologist first analyzes the problem and helps a patient to see the problem from a more positive aspect.
  2. Interpersonal therapy (IPT) deals with problems related to personal relationships. It analyses the relationship pattern of a patient and specifically addresses them to drive away depression.
  3. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is a group activity and encourages a patient to express their feelings. The idea is to share as much as a patient can. It helps the mind to focus on the present rather than wondering it to something irrelevant that causes depression.

Medical treatment: Medical treatment deals with depression with the help of antidepressants. Medication depends on the level of depression. For more serious depression, such as psychosis and bipolar disorder, a doctor often prescribes psychotic drugs along with antidepressants and mood stabilizers. Medical treatment is suggested only when psychological treatment fails. A patient might have to get admitted in a good facility for a short time or full period of the treatment.

The natural treatment: It is related to lifestyle changes and helps a patient overcome depression. It can be followed along with other forms of treatment. Some good practices are as follows:

  1. A good diet: A healthy diet often helps to fight depression. Serotonin rich food such as coconut oil, fish oil, eggs, cherries, Omega-3 acid greatly helps in fighting depression.
  2. Stay away from Caffeine: Any caffeine related products such as coffee, cigarettes or liquor should be avoided during the depression.
  3. Meditation: Meditation greatly helps in overcoming depression. It offers the much-needed piece of mind and helps to concentrate more.
  4. Daily exercise: It has been observed that regular physical activities such as walking, running and free hand exercise can be of great help in overcoming depression. It uplifts mood and reduces stress.
  5. Pumpkin seeds: Pumpkin seeds contain important elements such as magnesium, healthy fat, amino acid and L-tryptophan. Pumpkin seeds help to secrete serotonin and serotonin, in turn, help in fighting depression.

In fact, the plethora of ailments which people complain of suffering from, almost always deal with their physical health. In this over engagement to restore the physical health, the well being of the mental health is never considered. However truth remains that the health of the mind is equally if not more important and must be given its share of priority. With the growing age and times, depression has emerged as a gnawing problem, one that is plaguing individuals indiscriminately and one that must be eradicated as soon as possible.

1. Exercises

Everyday a bit of exercise not only keeps the body fit and healthy but also goes a long way in easing and calming the mind. You need not indulge in strenuous exercises but must make it a conscientious habit to work out a bit daily.

2. Talk to people

Though depression makes one inexorably quiet and silent, the first thing that is prescribed as a remedial measure is talk to people. Engaging in conversations with people, telling them what exactly is troubling you are proven ways to combat depression.

3. Meditate

How To Help Someone Having Suicidal Thoughts?

Although there is no single reason why someone may have suicidal tendencies, certain things can increase the risk. An individual is more likely to have suicidal thoughts if he has a mental health condition like depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. The vulnerability also increases in cases of alcoholism, drug abuse or poor job security. It may not be possible to prevent suicidal thoughts, but keeping one's mind healthy with regular exercise, healthy eating and maintaining friendships can help one deal better with stress

Signs Pointing Towards Impending Suicide:

People who commit suicide do not want to die but find pain-bearing worst than dying. You should never take suicide talks of a person just as threats as it is the most basic sign of a person having suicidal tendencies. Here are some other signs pointing towards an impending suicide:

  • Focus on death: If you find a person only talking about the ways of dying, you should immediately start to talk to the person in private to understand the rood of his problem.
  • Buying or stocking pills: The person might be buying or stocking pills for committing suicide.
  • After-life planning: The person might start to take necessary steps to prepare for death, like updating the will, giving away stuff, calling close ones and saying goodbye or writing a suicide note.
  • Withdrawal: The person might boycott his close ones, family members, social events and family gathering and become isolated.
  • Speaking About His/Her Pain: The person might start to talk openly about his/her pain or feel like they are a burden on others.
  • Mood swings: A person might get angry too quickly or get depressed, anxious or sad and at times they may also become calm when they have decided to go with suicide.
  • Substance Abuse: The person might start drinking too much or consuming drugs once in an attempt to reduce their pain.

It can be very upsetting when someone says things which sound as if the person is considering suicide. One may not be sure what to do to help as to whether one should take talk of suicide seriously, or if intervention might make the situation worse.

Conditions in which suicide is common:

  • Mental disorders
  • Addictions to alcohol or other drugs
  • A serious physical illness
  • A major loss (such as the death of a loved one or the loss of a relationship or job)
  • Serious legal or financial problems
  • A history of trauma or abuse

Taking action is always the best choice. One of the best things one can do if someone is feeling suicidal is to encourage them to talk about their feelings and to listen to what they say. One can provide the best help by listening and not being judgemental. If the person has been diagnosed with a mental health condition like depression, one can take advice from his care team.

Ways to help a person having suicidal thoughts:

  • One should avoid offering solutions.
  • While listening, do not give in to the temptation of providing a solution.
  • One should ask open-ended questions so that the person remains in control and expresses his feelings.
  • On the contrary, it will offer an opportunity to talk about feelings which may reduce the risk of acting on suicidal feelings.
  • Ensure that the person is not left on his own if there is an immediate danger.
  • One cannot always tell when a loved one or friend is considering suicide, so one must be on the lookout for warning signs.

After listening to their feelings, one may feel that certain aspects of their thinking and behaviour are making their problems worse. But pointing this out will not be particularly helpful to them. Reassurance, respect and support will only help someone during these difficult periods. As a final note, one must realise that talking to someone about their feelings is not long lasting and can help them feel safe and secure temporarily.

A professional help can provide the long-term support to help someone overcome their suicidal tendencies. That will the person to deal with the primary issues behind someone's suicidal thoughts, besides offering advice and support.

Depression

The medical model is a particular way of viewing human suffering, decay, dysfunction and, ultimately, death. It is a paradigm, a lens through which physicians and others perceive certain abnormal or aberrant phenomena like leukemia, diabetes, and now, depression and many other mental disorders. But despite the immense contribution of the medical model in diagnosing and treating disease, its literal application to archetypal human experiences such as depression, psychosis, and anxiety is problematical.
There is no denying that those who suffer from severe depression are ill.

How Homeopathy Can Help Treat Depression?

Depression is a state of mind that adversely affects the way a person thinks, feels and behaves. In today’s times, we are more aware of the concepts of mental health and hence, come across more and more cases of depression and other mental or emotional illnesses like mood disorders, anxiety neurosis, behavioral problems, etc. A lot of factors predispose us to such conditions and determine the state of our mental health. To name a few:

  1. A overtly competitive environment

  2. Unfulfilled desires

  3. Dissatisfying relationships

  4. Performance pressures

  5. Societal Pressures

In most cases, depression or other mental illnesses do not have a single cause. Rather, it results from a mix of factors i.e. your genes, events in your past, your current circumstances, and much more.

Mental illnesses, like many other behavioral health issues, has complex interacting Biological, Psychological, Social and Environmental contributing factors.

Depression in teenagers is very common owing to hormonal changes and increased stress of coping with studies and the social world. Similarly, depression is very commonly seen in women post giving birth to a child. Genetic factors also play an important role in triggering depression in a person.

Signs and Symptoms of depression:

  1. Constant feeling of sadness irrespective of the company.

  2. Thoughts or attempts of suicide: Thinking that suicide will solve all problems.

  3. Fatigue: A state of decreased energy levels.

  5. Loss of interest in daily activities: Lack of interest in your hobbies, your favorite pastimes or social activities, or sex etc.

  6. Appetite or weight changes: Significant weight loss or weight gain.

  7. Sleeping disorders: Either insomnia, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping.

Homeopathy For Depression:

In the initial stages or in the milder forms or in people who are not aware of the disease, depression can go unidentified till its implications become too obvious. People often overlook it as a mere low mood assuming it as a part of their psychological makeup. Even families or spouses start accommodating accordingly, thereby making identification of depression all the more difficult. Homeopathic treatment for depression is a great form of alternative medicine and a natural therapy without any side effects of the medication.

Advantages of using Homeopathy for Depression:

The best part of homeopathic treatment is that the homeopathic medicines are totally side effect free and long term use leads to no damage to the body. They also do not cause any sedation, thereby not hampering the normal functioning in the person’s daily life.

The options in conventional treatments are either to take antidepressant medications which have side effects and implications on the person’s general well-being. However, homeopathic medicines not only help in treating the illness but also help to support the patient emotionally and physically, by not disrupting the normal functioning of day to day life.

There are a lot of medicines in homeopathy which may be used to treat these sort of emotional disturbances, after a detailed understanding of the behavior of a person; his/her complete biological and genetic status, his/her past and existing medical conditions, the life-space, etc.

It is always recommended to consult a homeopath and not self-medicate, it requires a skilled and well-trained homeopath to identify the correct remedy and the corresponding potency (power and dosage) of the medicines for each patient.

Depression In Children - How To Deal With It?

In today’s times, depression has spread within the society like an epidemic. People with depression wake up feeling low, spend their day drowning in anxiety and end the day without any hopes for the future. Although the symptoms may be different, children are not safe from the clutches of depression either. It is more difficult for them to express their anxiety and helplessness due to their lack of understanding of the concept of depression.

Five percent of the children suffer from depression worldwide. If not taken care of, the depression can spiral out of control and potentially ruin the prospects of the child as adults. If you start noticing your child slowly retreating into their own world or unable to control their emotions, you must evaluate if your child is suffering from depression and take steps to help them.

Signs of depression in children:

The role of parents in helping a child overcome depression is of primary importance. While occasional bouts of feeling low and cranky is a part of growing up, extended periods of certain signs are cause for concern. They include:

• Being aggressive, sad or unhappy most of the time
• Saying negative things about themselves
• Lack of energy and interest in games
Anxiety, irritability, and fear of social situations
Nightmares
• Disrupted dietary patterns
• Self-harming tendencies

Coping with depression

• It is important to notice unnatural behaviour in children and talking to them about it in a patient, non-judgemental and understanding manner. If the child is unwilling to talk, respect their space and broach the subject later.
• Depression doesn’t indicate the parents are failing in their roles. The cause of depression can be anything from genetic vulnerability to physical health and the immediate environment. The best course of action is addressing the cause and helping the child overcome depression.
• Often it is best to seek the professional help of a therapist or counsellor the child trusts. Forms of therapy including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy can help the child through play therapy, family therapy, and peer therapy.
• Giving the child a conducive atmosphere at home and in school is crucial. You might want to explore the possibilities of bullies or other factors in school, especially if your child is making excuses to not attend school and has deteriorating grades.
• Invest more time in their daily activities and engage them in activities of their choice to relieve their stress and channel their anxiety better.

The average age of appearance of depression in a child is progressively falling lower. In the face of such times, the child needs the parents more than ever to feel safe. It is easy for parents to deny depression in their children as the other alternative is heart-breaking. However, early diagnosis and intervention help the child to combat depression more effectively. A combination of medication, therapy, and support of the family is the best way of helping a child deal with depression and become a happier and successful adult.

How Depression And Diabetes Form A Vicious Circle?

How Depression And Diabetes Form A Vicious Circle?

Diabetes is a state where the body suffers from lack of energy due to poor metabolic state. This is construed as depression in many patients as they already feel lethargic and subdued. The fatigued state of body in diabetes can be alleviated by exercise which raises endorphins - substances which are released in the body especially by exercise - providing us the necessary elation so much necessary for our recovery

Managing diabetes may make a person feel alone and set apart from their friends and family due to the number of dietary restrictions they need to follow. Additionally, if the person has trouble controlling their blood sugar level, it may make him frustrated and anxious. Over time, these negative emotions can build up into depression.

Depression can make a person lose his sense of purpose and can make regular tasks feel like too much to handle. Thus, a depressed person may stop taking care of himself. The lack of energy can lead to a loss of appetite or unhealthy snacking. This can trigger fluctuations in blood sugar levels that worsen diabetes.

Causes:

  • The diet and exercise advised by doctors may compound the problem of depression.
  • Financial burden of treatment- Medicines, Tests, Consultation and Hospital admission also contribute to stress
  • Diabetics are almost 3 times more likely to suffer form depression as compared to non-diabetics
  • Depression in diabetics adversely affects the outcome of treatment as depressed pts are less likely to take their medicines in time, go to the doctor or do the required tests..leading to a vicious cycle

Depression and diabetes have a cyclic relationship. The good news is that these two diseases can be treated together and managing one of these diseases can have a positive effect on the other as well.

Here are a few ways to treat diabetes and depression:

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise is very beneficial towards treating, both depression and diabetes. Exercise helps regulate blood sugar levels and hence can help control diabetes. It also helps in reducing excess weight, which can enhance your self image and make you feel happier. Simultaneously, it also releases endorphins or the 'feel good' brain chemical. This can help alleviate depression symptoms.

A Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is essential for good health and can help manage, both these disorders. Along with a balanced diet, there is also a need to abstain from snacking between meals. Reducing the amount of sugar in your meals helps stabilize blood sugar level and control fluctuations. Stable blood sugar level keep a person from becoming increasingly anxious and can thus prevent depression.

Restful Sleep

A good night's sleep can treat, both diabetes and depression. If you have proper sleep, you will awake feeling refreshed and energetic. This positive energy balances the negativity of depression, lowers the urge to snack and helps in stabilizing blood sugar level.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy or in particular cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven beneficial towards treating depression. This in turn gives a person the motivation needed to manage his diabetes as well.
