The symptoms of an itchy scalp and flaking skin under your hair can be treated with aloe vera. A 1998 study found that aloe vera helped resolve the scalp inflammation that dandruff causes. The fatty acids found in the aloe plant have anti-inflammatory properties.

Rotate your anti-dandruff shampoo with a regular moisturizing one to avoid getting a dry scalp. If you've tried over-the-counter dandruff shampoos and are still fighting flakes, see a dermatologist. You may need a stronger, prescription-strength shampoo or another treatment.

Fungal infections: tinea capitis, or ringworm, can cause intense itching on the scalp. Some people also notice dry flakes or blisters, and the hair may fall out in clumps. Some other fungal infections can also cause dandruff symptoms and lead to hair loss. Antifungal treatments can help treat these conditions.

For mild dandruff, wash your hair every day with a gentle shampoo to reduce the amount of oil on your scalp. If your dandruff is more severe or a regular shampoo doesn't work, try a dandruff shampoo. Most dandruff shampoos contain medicine that kills the fungus on your scalp or removes flaky skin.
