Menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea is a condition wherein one experiences painful cramps which occur during the menses. Dysmenorrhea is classified into two types –

  1. Primary Dysmenorrhea: These are the most common menstrual cramps which begin 1-2 years after menstrual cycles begin. The pain is felt in the lower part of the abdomen or the back. The cramps usually start before the period begins, and disappear after 2-3 days.
  2. Secondary Dysmenorrhea: This is a type of dysmenorrhea which accompanies any disorder in the reproductive system. Secondary dysmenorrhea tends to last longer than the normal menstrual cramps.

Symptoms-

Pregnancy places a lot of demand on the expectant mother. While the emotional demands are not very evident, the physical ones are. The mother has to ensure that the developing baby gets all the required nutrients through her. Some of them are very critical, and not getting adequate amounts of these manifest as problems, which cannot be rectified later. Calcium supply and associated problems that may arise is one such example.
If there is a reduced supply of calcium and the bones and teeth are not formed properly, taking any amount of calcium is not going to correct the situation later, after delivery.

  1. The bones which are forming in the developing baby are dependent on the mother for adequate supply of calcium. It is common knowledge that calcium is an integral component of bones, teeth, and skeleton. Hypocalcemia, which is a condition where there is reduced amounts of calcium in the body, can be quite severe during pregnancy.
  2. In addition to the growing baby’s needs, calcium also plays a vital role in the pregnant mother for muscular contractions, nerve conduction, hormone secretion, and blood clotting. So adequate intake of calcium during pregnancy is essential.

Now, the question arises as to how much calcium is good enough. For a normal female, about 1000 mg of calcium is required on a daily basis. This goes up by another 200 to 300 mg for a pregnant woman, especially during the third trimester when the bone and teeth formation is in full speed. This extra amount of calcium should be continued even after pregnancy, as calcium continues to be provided to the baby during the lactation phase.

Some of the symptoms of reduced calcium intake during pregnancy are aching muscles, brittle nails, weakened bones, severe cramping, and dry skin. If there is suspected hypocalcemia, it is best to seek medical advice. It is not advisable to take supplements without medical supervision. Increased amounts of calcium can produce a different set of symptoms.

While these are evident symptoms, there are other detrimental effects on the baby too. Calcium deficiency affects development of heart and associated structures and puts the newborn at a higher risk of developing hypertension. The baby’s fat percentage and triglycerides are also increased. The bone mineral density is reduced. The delivery period could be prolonged, as muscular contractions and nerve conduction are severely impacted when there is less calcium in the system. Recovery from labor is also delayed.

It is possible that you are taking adequate amounts of calcium, but its absorption is affected. Reducing caffeine intake helps in better absorption of calcium. When an expecting mother experiences uterine contractions and is getting ready to deliver the baby at 39 to 40 weeks, it is termed as a full-term labor. But due to several factors that can be caused by lifestyle or medical condition, the onset of labor might occur before 37 weeks of pregnancy which is termed as a preterm labor and could lead to an early birth which is not the best possible scenario for the baby. Hence, it is important to understand the factors contributing to the condition and take necessary precautions during pregnancy under the advice of your gynecologist.

Signs of Preterm labor
The typical signs of going into labor such as increased vaginal leak, cramps, and contractions are applicable in the case of early onset of labor as well.   • Desirable: when you attempt to bend the shoe, it should “give” at the ball of the foot to provide smooth rollover. When the shoe is on, you should be able to scrunch, extend, and wiggle your toes.     
  • Problematic: if the shoe is too rigid, it will not “give” when you try to bend it; this certainly can be uncomfortable. Also, constantly wearing tight, inflexible shoes can “retard” a foot- the foot doesn’t have a chance to respond to the ground because the shoe won’t let it.If the shoe is too flimsy, it will collapse in various areas along the sole, or it will twist, allowing problem foot positions. If worn consistently, flimsy shoes allow your foot to “collapse” easier, perhaps leading to fallen arches.

B. INSOLE: on the inside of the shoe, this is the material on the flat foot surface that goes from the heel to the toes.

  • Desirable: the insole should provide comfortable support to the heel and the arch on the inside of the foot. As you run your finger over this area on the inside of the shoe, you should feel a rise in the contour of the material that matches the height of your own arch.
