First by clinical examination, dentist will identify whether its is normal anatomy of enamel (sometimes) or actual crack.
If there is normal anatomy it will not worse the condition. And we can mask it with laminate or else.
If actual crack is there then also according to crack involvement treatment can be carried out.

There is certainly a way to avoid it, that is maintenance of oral hygiene. Brush twice daily, keep your teeth clean and visit your dentist at least every six months. In case the situation has already progressed, there are certain methods to treat the same. Most common way being periodontal surgery.
