Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) - Ways To Prevent It!

UTI is a bacterial infection of the urinary tract. Recurrent UTI or chronic UTI if remain untreated can even lead to an organ failure. UTI is the second most common infection in the body. In reproductive age, there is a 10 fold increase in incidence in women than in men.

Why?

  • Short urethra 
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Close proximity of urethral opening to the areas like vagina and vulva which are contaminated heavily with bacteria
  • Recurrent vaginal infection

You may be suffering from UTI if:

  1. You feel a pain in pelvis while urinating
  2. You feel the need to urinate again and again and despite urgency you manage to pee only little
  3. You feel burning while urinating or you have to stop urination in between because of excessive burning
  4. Urine appears red or cloudy or bright pink with strong smell.

In severe infection, you may suffer from fever with chills, nausea and vomiting. Bad hygiene, sexual intercourse, recurrent vaginal infections, dehydration, holding urine for too long, pregnancy, catheterization while surgery, hypo-estrogenic state like menopause, having diabetes mellitus are some reasons and predisposing factors behind UTI.

If you feel any of the symptoms of UTI you must visit doctor and get urine microscopic examination done. To get proper result patient should collect midstream urine sample in sterile container after washing the private parts.

In chronic or recurring UTI, more extended investigation protocols like intravenous pyelography, cystoscopy (endoscopy of urinary bladder via urethra) are indicated.

Prevention

  • The urge for urination should not be suppressed.
  • Drinking water helps dilute your urine and ensures that you'll urinate more frequently — allowing bacteria to be flushed from your urinary tract before an infection can begin.
  • Wipe from front to back. Doing so after urinating and after a bowel movement helps prevent bacteria in the anal region from spreading to the vagina and urethra.
  • Empty your bladder soon after intercourse. 
  • Change your birth control method. Diaphragms or unlubricated or spermicide-treated condoms can contribute to bacterial growth.
  • Don't use feminine deodorants. These sprays can irritate your genital area and increase your risk of UTI.
  • Wear cotton underwear. Cotton fabric allows moisture escape while other fabrics can trap moisture, which creates a potential breeding ground for bacteria. Also, avoid tight-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid vaginal dryness
  • Get help for recurrent UTI. 
  • Avoid intake of hot, oily, spicy, sour, salty, and bitter foods.
  • Increase intake of liquids in the form of water, juices, coconut water, and other cooling drinks.
  • Increase intake of pitta-pacifying herbs like green cardamom, coriander, licorice root, black resins, gulkand and kokam syrup etc.
  • Alcohol and coffee should be forbidden.
  • Coriander and cumin seed water: Soak coriander and cumin seeds overnight in 6 times water. Drink 30 to 50 ml water next morning after sieving or filtering. Prepare fresh every day.
  • Punarnavashtak kwath, Varunadi kwath, Chandrakala rasa, Chandraprabha vati etc are some of the ayurvedic medicines which are used treat UTI, those should be taken under proper guidance, if you suffer from UTI.

Food is a very important part of your life as it provides all the necessary nutrients required by your body and is essentially, the fuel for all things to function within. However, many people may have aversion to certain kinds of food as it causes adverse reactions within their body. Let’s look at some of the common food allergies that people commonly report and how to identify them.

Allergies v/s Intolerances: ?It is important to note here that there is a significant difference between food sensitivities or intolerances and allergies. Sensitivities or intolerances cause adverse effects on your body inevitably when you consume certain types of foods. One such example is diarrhea, caused by ingesting cheese or milk by lactose intolerant people. However, allergies are caused when the immune system within your body mistakes harmless food as something that might harm you and thus tries to protect you from its effects. This results in reactions within your body which may be very painful and problematic.

Common foods that trigger allergies

Some of the milder symptoms could be:

  6. Amalaki powder: Take some amalaki powder and mix it with honey or sugar. Add it to a glass of water and drink. It can also be added to milk or used as a paste to be applied on the vaginal tract for better results.

  7. Asparagus: Blend and boil asparagus with somnifera withania. Drink this for effectively treating this condition.

  8. Turmeric powder and garlic: Blend turmeric powder with garlic. This is effective when the white release is thick and irritating.

  • Use a paste of Indian aloe vera, asafoetida and coriander for pain relief.
  • Grind cumin seeds and mix it with lemon juice. Keep the mixture on the painful area of your head for quick relief.
  • Have coconut water.

Recurrent headaches
Any form of headache, which tends to reoccur after some time instead of ending is referred to as recurrent headache. There are several Ayurvedic remedies for the effective management of recurrent headaches. They as are as follows:

  • Boil one teaspoon of haritaki powder in water and drink it.
  • Massage your neck gently using warm calamus root oil.
  • Lie down with your nostrils parallel to the ceiling, and apply sesame oil in your nostrils. This is known as nasal therapy.

A girl’s first period or Menarche marks her transition from a ‘girl’ to a ‘woman’. Most girls have their first period between the ages of 11 to 13 depending on their genetic structure, body weight, nutrition and maturity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Periods are usually irregular in the first two years and gradually settle into a pattern. Along with the duration of the periods, there may also be fluctuation in the amount of blood being lost. Puberty menorrhagia can be described as excessive vaginal bleeding during menstruation. This can occur up to the age of 19 years.

One of the characteristic symptoms of menorrhagia during puberty is having to change tampons or sanitary napkins every 2-3 hours. Periods that last more than 7 days can also be a sign of this condition. While the average amount of blood lost during menstruation is 30ml, adolescents suffering from this condition can lose up to 80ml of blood. Other symptoms include acne, pale skin, the growth of excessive facial or body hair and palpitations of the abdomen. These indicate an imbalance of hormones within the body.

In most cases, this condition is caused by anovulatory cycles. This can be described as a menstrual cycle in which an egg is not released by the ovaries. Anovulatory cycles may be triggered by sudden changes in hormone levels, drastic weight loss or weight gain, stress, extreme levels of exercising and an imbalanced diet. The use of hormonal contraceptives and infections may also cause excessive menstrual bleeding. Less common causes of this condition include endocrine disorders, systemic illnesses and structural lesions such as cervical polyps or fibroids.

While menorrhagia is common during puberty, if it continues for over three months, you must consult a doctor. Depending on the factors triggering this condition it can be treated with hormonal or non-hormonal medication or even a combination of the two. Treatment for this condition must be tailored to each patient while keeping in mind her age, family medical history and co-existing medical conditions. Hormonal treatment for excessive menstrual bleeding can take the form of oral contraceptives or progesterone tablets. Non-hormonal forms of treating this condition include iron supplements and medication to reduce blood flow.
