Nose Block & Mouth Breathing - How To Handle It In Kids?

Nose Block & Mouth Breathing - How To Handle It In Kids?

Mouth breathing isn’t a problem in itself. Both, the mouth and the nose are healthy airways to the lungs. However, when someone has to breathe from their mouth due to a nose block, it is not only uncomfortable but also unhealthy. Adults can easily notice when they have blocked nasal cavities but children need special attention.

Ill Effects of Blocked Nose

Having a blocked nose does not only end in the irritating mouth breathing but also in long term complications like:

  • Misaligned teeth

  • Facial deformities

  • Halitosis

  • Gum and dental health issues like gingivitis and cavities

  • Fatigue

  • Frequent infections

  • Throat and ear infections

  • Allergic reactions

The nose produces nitric oxide that facilitates oxygen distribution throughout the body, especially to the lungs. When a child depends on mouth breathing, the lack of oxygen fatigues them. The child also becomes susceptible to infections because nitric oxide is antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial.

The mucus and hair follicles in the nose prevent dust and pollen from entering the airways. Mouth breathing results in particle retention in the lungs and dryness of the bronchial tubes.

Prolonged mouth breathing is indeed not healthy. So, we need to spot it and treat it.

How to Spot Mouth Breathing in Children?

You can conclude that your child is suffering from a blocked nose if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Snoring

  • Dry mouth

  • Chapped lips

  • Halitosis

  • Fatigue and daytime sleepiness

  • Dark circles

  • Irritability throughout the day and especially during bedtime

Causes of Nose Block and Mouth Breathing in Children

Considering all the ill-effects and the difficult symptoms, nobody would choose to breathe from their mouth. So, what causes mouth breathing or blocked nose even when the child does not have a cold?

Diagnosis

Although one can clearly see the symptoms, only a licensed practitioner can give a conclusive diagnosis. A general physician, ENT specialist, or a dentist can diagnose mouth breathing. They may ask questions about the symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment for mouth breathing will be done according to the diagnosed cause.

  • Antihistamines and nasal decongestants are the common methods of treatment because nasal blockage generally occurs due to cold or allergies.

  • In the case of obstructive sleep apnea, a CPAP mask needs to be worn at bedtime.

  • In the case of tonsils or adenoids, surgical removal is the answer.

  • In the case of dental deformities, braces and other dental structures are helpful.

  • Myofunctional therapy in addition to the required medication.

Once an ENT specialist has discovered the cause, treatment of blocked nose or mouth breathing is easy. Nevertheless, prevention is even better so look out for risk factors such as tonsils, asthma, and other causes. Also, keep your air free of allergens with HVAC air purifiers. It is always advisable to follow all the preventing instruction prescribed by the doctor for better results. Also, if one notices any of the symptoms, it is recommended to consult doctors as soon as possible.

Common Cold Allergy - All You Need To Know!

Common Cold Allergy - All You Need To Know!

Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is a type of inflammation in the nose which occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air. An allergen is something that triggers an allergy. When a person with allergic rhinitis breathes in an allergen such as pollen, mold, animal dander, or dust, the body releases chemicals that cause allergy symptoms.

Signs and symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, red, itchy watery eyes, and swelling around the eyes. coughing, a sore or scratchy throat, itchy eyes, watery eyes, dark circles under the eyes, frequent headaches, eczema-type symptoms, such as having extremely dry, itchy skin that can blister and weep, hives, excessive fatigue. You’ll usually feel one or more of these symptoms immediately after coming into contact with an allergen. Some symptoms, such as recurrent headaches and fatigue, may only happen after long-term exposure to allergens.

Risk factors for allergic rhinitis -

Allergies Can affect anyone, but you’re more likely to develop allergic rhinitis if there is a history of allergies in your family. Having asthma or atopic eczema can also increase your risk of allergic rhinitis.

Some External factors can trigger or worsen this condition, including:

cigarette smoke, chemicals, cold temperatures, humidity, wind, air pollution, hairspray, perfumes, colognes, wood smoke, fumes

Complications of Allergic Rhinitis

Long-term (chronic) allergic rhinitis may cause a number of health problems including:

  1. Sinus infections (sinusitis) - Allergic rhinitis can block the tubes that drain the sinuses, leading to infection of the sinus cavities (acute sinusitis). Symptoms include pain in the front of the head and upper face, postnasal drip, stuffy nose, and thick, colored mucus. With a severe sinus infection, you may have a fever and feel sick. Allergic rhinitis can also cause long-lasting (chronic) sinusitis or inflammation of the sinus cavities.

  2. Plugged ears, pressure or pain in the ears and ear infections (otitis media) - These can occur when allergic rhinitis affects how much mucus you have in your ears and the eustachian tubes, which run between the inside of the ears and the back of the throat. In children, problems with the eustachian tubes can lead to difficulty hearing.

  3. Asthma - Many people have both allergic rhinitis and asthma. If you have an allergy, you are more likely to develop asthma. And for people who already have asthma, allergic rhinitis can cause their asthma symptoms to get worse.

  4. Nasal polyps - These are soft, noncancerous (benign) growths that develop on the lining of your nose or sinuses due to chronic inflammation. Small polyps may not cause problems, but larger ones can block the airflow through your nose, making it difficult to breathe.

Prevention

1. Do saline gargles.

2. Whenever possible do steam inhalation also.

3. Cover your nose and mouth with hanky for at least 30sec when you go in dusty areas also when you go in and out of AC. As our noses the most sensitive part of our body, When there is a temperature difference between two rooms or inside and outside, then if we do not protect our nose, it gets affected.

4. Drink Hot Liquids --Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat.

5. Sleep With an Extra Pillow Under Your Head--  Elevating your head will help relieve congested nasal passages. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and box springs to create a more gradual slope.

6. Treat That Stuffy Nose With Warm Salt Water--Salt-water rinsing helps break nasal congestion, while also removing virus particles and bacteria from your nose.

7. Blow Your Nose Often (and the Right Way)-- It's Important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than snorting mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can carry germ-carrying phlegm back into your ear passages, causing earache. The best way to blow your nose: Press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other.

8. Do not smoke or let other people smoke in your house. Smoking and breathing in other people's smoke will irritate the lining of your nose, eyes, throat and airways, and can make your symptoms worse.

Homeopathy

When it comes to the treatment of allergic rhinitis/cold, Homeopathy is much better at treating the problem. Itis in stark contrast to allopathy, where antiallergic and steroids are used to suppress inflammation. Homeopathic medicines do not aim at just reducing inflammation. They also intend to cure the basic cause of recurrent inflammation. This way, not only the symptoms of rhinitis are treated but the incidence of attacks is reduced/eliminated. It is worthwhile to mention here that all Homeopathic remedies are natural and do not contain any chemicals. That is why these purely natural homeopathic remedies do not have any side effects at all. Here is a list of the top homeopathic medicines for asthma, along with the symptoms when they are used -

  • Ars Alb: Thin watery discharge from the nose with irritation and sneezing.Restlessness. Arsenicum is an efficient homeopathic medicine, which treats attacks, which take place after midnight. The patient is anxious, restless, and cannot sleep because of the fear of being suffocated.

  • Allium Cepa: Is useful when nasal mucus irritates your nose or upper lip; your eyes are runny but the discharge is bland and non-irritating; you feel worse from warm rooms and better in the open air.

  • Natrum Mur: Watery transparent discharge causing blister-like an eruption. Loss of taste or smell.

  • Sabadilla: Fluent coryza and violent sneezing, knowing not when will it end. Worse cold.Asthmatic form of rhinitis.

  • Euphrasia: Copious burning discharge from the eyes n bland discharge from the nose.

  • Bryonia: Nose blocked with congestion in the head. Cannot breathe through the nose. Dry cough with pain in the chest.

  • Gelsemium: It is indicated in bland discharge from the nose which is thick. It has sneezing, headache, chilliness in the back and aching pains. The patient is dull n weak

Homeopathy has no side effects and treats the underlying cause. You Should consult a homeopathic practitioner before starting homeopathic treatment for rhinitis.

Common Cold & Cough - How Homeopathy Can Help?

Common Cold & Cough - How Homeopathy Can Help?

Common cold and cough is one of the most common viral illnesses that have no specific treatment. Allopathic medicines provide palliative cure to just treat the symptoms, there is no definite antiviral for it. There is also popular belief having cold once or twice a year is a good way to cleanse the body. On the contrary, cough and cold could be the first symptoms of a serious underlying disease like pneumonia. From that angle, it is better to treat it than to just let it run its natural course. Especially in children and elderly, it can be chronic issue with repeated bouts and therefore treatment becomes mandatory.

The good news is that homeopathy provides a cure for this, not just treat external symptoms. Also, like any other condition, homeopathy looks at treating the whole myriad of associated symptoms, thereby providing holistic treatment.  Below are 5 common homeopathic remedies for chronic cough and cold:

Aconitum or Aconite:  Used in the early stages of a cold that was sudden in onset and severe.  There could be associated nasal discharge, fever and chills, chest congestion, itchy throat, and a traumatic experience.  The person may also feel thirsty, anxious, and agitated.

Allium Cepa:  Severe burning and watery eyes, nasal irritation, copious amounts of discharge, hoarseness, and headache. The runny nose improves in open air but worsens when being indoors.
Arsenicum album: The patient usually has complaints on the right side including watery nasal discharge, weakness, restlessness, chills, thirst. The discharge can irritate the upper lip and nasal mucosa.  The cold gradually moves to the throat and the irritation also shifts down (this phase requires a different treatment).
Belladonna: When the cold has a sudden onset with red face, high fever, cold feet, this can be used in the early stages of the cold.  There is associated high fever, tickly throat, glassy eyes, dry cough, restlessness, and delirium

EUPHRASIA: Burning eyes and profuse nasal discharge lead to reddened eyes and cheeks. More common in children, the condition worsens in open air, at night, and while lying down. The cough then moves down into the larynx and produces a harsh, hoarse voice.

PULSATILLA: Yellow or greenish mucous, nasal congestion, mouth breathing are some symptoms where this is used. It is very commonly used in newborn babies if the discharge colour is green or yellow. Associated symptoms include moodiness, easy crying, craving for attention, easily hurt and sensitive.

Homeopathy does 'cure' the cough and cold in patients, in the true sense of the word.  That provides palliative care and holistic treatment of the condition too.

Cold - How To Manage It?

Cold - How To Manage It?

Common cold can be defined as a viral infection affecting one’s upper respiratory tract (throat and nose) characterized by mild fever, sneezing, body aches and headaches, congestion, cough, sore throat, runny nose and a general feeling of being unwell. It takes around 10 days to recover completely from the sickness. Although there is no treatment as such for the common cold, however, few remedies might ease the symptoms.

  1. Stay Hydrated - Lemon and honey mixed with lukewarm water, in addition to clear chicken broth, works therapeutically on congestion or dehydration. However, refrain from caffeinated sodas, coffee and alcohol; beverages that can aggravate dehydration.

  2. Rest - Your body requires time to heal. Therefore, sufficient rest should be the utmost priority.

  3. Soothe your Sore Throat - A saltwater gargle early in the morning can bring great relief for your throat. Hard candy, tablets and sore throat sprays can be used as alternatives if you cannot gargle properly.

  4. Sip on Something Warm - Nothing feels better than a bowl of hot clear chicken soup when you are down with fever. It works wonderfully on the sore throat. Other warm beverages such as tea or a cup of warm clove juice help to improve nose and throat congestion by easing the mucous flow.

  5. Take Medications - Pain relievers, antihistamines (drugs to treat allergies) and decongestants might contribute to some relief. Nevertheless, these over-the-counter medicines cannot prevent or cure a cold entirely.

What not to consider as remedies?

  1. Antibiotics - Antibiotics help fight bacterial infections and are hence, not as effective against viral infections, the main contributor towards common cold.

  2. Cold medications for children below 6 - Over-the-counter drugs may have life-threatening consequences for children below the age of 6.
