गले में कफ जमना - Gale Mein Kaf Jamna!

Respiratory Complications During Pregnancy - Tips To Avoid Them!

Pregnancy brings with it a slew of changes in the physiological parameters of women. Women are susceptible to a number of complications, including respiratory complications during this stage. An abnormal chest X-ray or a complaint regarding some kind of respiratory trouble guides doctors to explore the possibility of pregnancy leading to respiratory complications.

Respiratory Complications During Pregnancy

Let us explore the likely respiratory complications during pregnancy.

Though studies do not indicate any increase in risk of pneumococcal infection during pregnancy, it has been observed that complications arising out of pneumonia are increased during this time. Anemic or asthmatic women are more susceptible to this infection, and the risk of complications is also more common in such women. It entails risk for both the mother and the child. While the child can be born preterm or low in weight, the mother can even suffer respiratory failure.

It is a kind of fungal infection that affects the respiratory system, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy. It is a respiratory tract infection that is self- limiting in nature. However, owing to reduced immunity during pregnancy, this fungal infection may turn out to be severe. It may cause a variety of complications, including pneumonia, fever, chest pain, difficulty in breathing, etc.

However, timely diagnosis and administration of antifungal therapy has reduced maternal mortality to a large extent.

There is a risk of formation of blood clots during pregnancy due to hypercoagulability of blood during this stage. This leads to an enhanced risk of embolic pneumonia, where blood clots may block an artery in the lungs. It is an emergency condition where patients usually have difficulty breathing, chest pain, cough, etc.

Pregnancy is not a risk factor for asthma, but asthma during pregnancy may exacerbate the risk of complications such as premature birth, restricted growth, preeclampsia, etc.

Tips to Avoid

These and other respiratory complications during pregnancy, if any, increase the risk of complications for the mother as well as the fetus. However, there are ways that pregnant women can adopt to get over these problems and give birth to a healthy baby.

  1. Avoid Crowded Place in Pregnancy: Pregnancy enhances the risk of Pneumonia, and Pneumonia is mostly a community acquired. Pregnant women can try to avoid Pneumonia by avoiding going to crowded places.
  2. Eat Immune Boosting Food: Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection that is mostly diagnosed during the third trimester. However, it is usually a self-limiting infection. Along with avoiding going to crowded places, she also needs to take immune-boosting food such as citrus fruits, green vegetables, etc.
  3. Walk Regularly: Pulmonary Embolism is the result of being immobile for a long time. This happens during pregnancy and this is what makes pregnant women susceptible to the problem. One can tide over the problem by taking regular strolls at home or outside and doing regular chores.
  4. Consult with Gynecologist in Case of Asthma: If she is suffering from asthma, she must discuss it with the gynecologist. Most asthma medications are safe to be taken during pregnancy.
  5. Take Care of Infant Breath: Pregnant women should regularly visit gynecologists for checkups. They should also take a balanced diet and stay happy for the healthy life of the child.

Wash your hands frequently. Washing your hands in the most preventable way of contracting the cold or flu virus. Scrub your hands with soap and water before eating, and before and after using the bathroom. To wash your hands, follow these instructions:

  • Wet your hands with warm or cold water.
  • Apply soap to your hands.
  • Rub your hands to lather them together. Scrub everywhere. Do not forget to scrub under your fingernails, between your fingers, and the backs of your hands.
  • Scrub for at least 20 seconds. Singing “Happy Birthday” is a quick way to remember how long.
  • Rinse your hands with clean water.

Stop Viral Infections From Spreading!

Stop Viral Infections From Spreading!

Do you suffer from a runny nose all the time? Have you been suffering from a viral illness and are worried that you might spread it to your children?

Viral infections spread rapidly, but the good news is that you can prevent that from happening with some simple and easy steps.

Here are the simple ways to stop viral infections from spreading between individuals.

1. Cover your mouth when you cough

When you cough, you release thousands of tiny droplets of your saliva into the air. These droplets are not visible to the naked eye. However, they are packed with the virus that is causing the infection. Covering your mouth with your hand or a tissue can help prevent the spread of this infection to others.

2. Use a tissue, not a handkerchief

A tissue can be disposed of immediately after it's used. It is unlikely you will do the same with a handkerchief. If you repeatedly use the same kerchief to sneeze, cough or blow your nose into, you risk getting re-exposed to the virus.

3. Use a hand sanitizer

Every time you cough or sneeze and keep your mouth covered with your hands, use a hand sanitizer. These are readily available in most supermarkets and pharmacies these days. There are even sprays and tiny pocket sanitizer tubes available, so there is no excuse not to use them.

4. Get vaccinated

These days, the flu vaccine is available that can help protect you from picking up and getting infected by these viruses. While there might be some difficulty procuring these, most hospital pharmacies will have them. Ask your doctor about getting the flu vaccine once a year to keep you protected.

5. Catch it, bin it and kill it.

This is a popular dictum in the UK to prevent the spread of the flu virus. Catch the virus using a clean tissue, bin the tissue and then kill the virus by washing your hands with soap and water.

Closing Remarks

These simple steps should help you reduce the risk of contracting or spreading viral illnesses.

Cough - Symptoms, Causes And Treatment!

Cough
A cough is a reflex action to clear the throat from mucus and the external irritants such as the dust particles, smoke, microbes, and fluids etc. In short, the cough is a quick eviction of air from the lungs, which passes through the mouth. It is a common reflex that helps remove the obstruction of breathing and does not need immediate medical attention at the initial stage. However, if a cough lasts longer, it may possibly a sign of the serious disease as well.

A cough can be divided into two parts viz. an Acute Cough and Chronic Cough. Coughs that last not more than 2 to 3 weeks are called Acute Cough while Chronic Coughs last longer than 3 weeks and can be dangerous for health. These kinds of coughs are known as Persistent Coughs as well.

Causes of Acute Coughs (Short-Term Coughs)
A quite common infection that causes the Acute Coughs is called the Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, which is also known as the URI or URTI. This infection affects the throat, trachea and sinuses, which triggers flu, common cold, and Laryngitis.

Another reason that causes Acute Coughs is called the Lower Respiratory Tract Infection (LRTI), which affects the lungs and lower airways. This infection causes Pneumonia and Bronchitis. Besides, Acute Coughs can cause Hay Fever as well.

Causes of Chronic or Persistent Coughs (Long-Term Coughs)
There can be a number of reasons that cause Chronic Coughs such as smokingAsthma, Bronchitis, post-nasal drip, Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) etc.

1. Smoking:
A cough caused by the smoking is often called the ‘Smoker’s Cough’. It usually lasts longer and may lead to loads of complications in the respiratory system of the body including the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which obstructs the lung and creates several breathing problems and poor airflow for a long-term.

2. Asthma:
Asthmatic Coughs include symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and tiredness etc. This type of coughs increases during the nights and cause difficulty sleeping.

3. Bronchitis:
Bronchitis is a type of inflammation that damages the bronchial tubes, which carries the air to the lungs. It produces thick mucus that can further result in bronchial tubes to be swelled and/ or blocked.

4. Post-Nasal Drip:
The body produces mucus, a thick, wet and stingy fluid substance, on a regular basis to help gets rid of the external dust particles and virus. Usually, it is not noticeable and drips down the throat from the back of the nose. However, when the body produces an excessive amount of mucus, it comes out of the nostrils and mouth and causes running nose.

5. Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
The Acute Coughs often cause stomach acid to leak up into the tube that joints mouth and stomach, which is called oesophagus/ esophageal or gullet. The tube is also known as the food pipe. GORD usually leads to the heartburn and affects the taste buds as well.

Types of Coughs
Coughs can further be divided into four distinct categories namely Croup Coughs, Dry Coughs, Wet Coughs and Whooping Coughs. Let us know about these four types of coughs first.

1. Croup Coughs:
Croup is an infection that is caused by the viruses and bacteria, and affects the Larynx, also called the voice box, trachea, known as the windpipe and the bronchial tubes that supply air to the lungs. Croup Coughs are usually contagious, especially at the initial stages. It irritates the Upper Respiratory Tract and makes it swelled that causes complications while breathing.

2. Dry Coughs:
Dry Coughs are often caused by several factors such as the infection in the nose and throat, allergies air pollution, change in the temperature, dry atmosphere and acid reflux etc. It produces very less or no mucus during the infection and is also known as the Tickly Coughs and Non-Productive Coughs.

3. Wet Coughs:
Wet Coughs are also known as the Chesty Coughs and Productive Coughs. This type of coughs produces a large amount of mucus and phlegm, which is stored in the Lower Respiratory Tract due to the infection and/ or asthma. Wet Cough occurs to remove the additional mucus through the nostrils and mouth.

4. Whooping Coughs:
Whooping Coughs are also known as the Pertussis. This type of coughs is caused by the bacterial infection into the Upper Respiratory Tract and is highly contagious. Some of the symptoms the Whooping Coughs cause include the running nose, fever, nasal blockage, watery eyes, and extreme fatigue in some cases.

Cough Symptoms and Signs-
-  Sore throat

-  Heartburn

-  Excessive production of the mucus and phlegm

-  Blocked nasal

-  Running nose

-  Post-nasal drips

-  Unpleasant and sore taste

-  Hoarseness

These are the common symptoms, in case of multiple symptoms, ask your doctor to consult the patient.

Complications of Cough
While Acute Cough is a protective function that removes the blockage in the airways and fights the external bacteria and germs, Chronic Cough can sometimes be quite dangerous and can lead to many other serious diseases. Some of the common and major complications that cough causes include:

1. Fainting and Dizziness
The severe coughs sometimes cause fainting and dizziness and are often known as the Cough Syncope. It affects the sensory organs and reduces the blood flow to the brain while coughing, which can lead to major damages. Usually, Asthma, Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Whooping Coughs, and some kinds of heart diseases cause fainting during the coughs.

2. Insomnia-
Insomnia is a sleep disorder, which is among the common complications caused by the coughs. Regular production of mucus makes the body release it through the coughs and makes it difficult to sleep at nights. The post-nasal drips and symptoms of GERD are the two main causes that increase the chances of having insomnia.

3. Abdominal Hernia-
Chronic Coughs often cause throat infection, which can spread throughout the body and can affect other parts as well; and can lead to tearing the abdominal wall. This condition is however quite rare. Usually, the abdominal hernia caused by other infections or diseases is hard to identify, however, the hernia caused by the coughs are easily identified.

4. Fractured Ribs-
As per the article published by the World Journal of Emergency Surgery in 2006, fractured ribs caused by the Chronic Coughs are among the quite common complications occurred by the coughs. It mainly occurs in the old adults and has an effect on women for the most part. Chronic Coughs majorly affect the middle ribs and increased the chances of attacking the people having low bone density.

5. Hypoxia-
The severe Persistent Coughs affect the gas exchange in the lungs and blocks the necessary amount of oxygen required by the body tissues. This condition is called the Hypoxia. Hypoxia caused by the Persistent Coughs commonly attacks infants and babies as compared to the adults. Furthermore, Whooping Coughs develop the bacteria in the body that cause the Pneumonia, which may increase the risks of getting Brain Hypoxia.

Other Complications of Cough
-  Headache

-  Physical exhaustion

-  Cough-induced urine leakage

-  Hoarse voice

-  Muscle uneasiness

-  Small blood vessel injury

-  Inflammation in the throat tissues

-  Coughing up blood

How to Prevent Coughing?
-  Avoid the extreme change in the temperature, such as the sudden exposure to the Sun or moving to the air-conditioned rooms from the heat outside.

-  Avoid taking warm bath late at nights or early in the morning.

-  Avoid consuming pickles and fried foods as sour food items increase the chances of getting a cough

-  Avoid extremely cold food items, especially the cold drinks and ice creams

-  Keep the hands and body clean to get rid of the germs

-  Keep the house clean and make sure bathroom and kitchen are hygienic and germ-free

-  Avoid getting in touch with dust

-  Keep the rooms ventilated with filtered air-conditioning system

-  Keep the body hydrated and consume enough water or any other beverages

-  Avoid being in contact with infected people. Many types of coughs are contagious and transmit the bacteria very quickly.

-  Have proper sleep

-  Avoid consuming alcohol and smoking

Cough Diagnosis-
The doctor starts the diagnosis procedure with examining the throat and test out if the infection persists. Further analysis includes listening to the sound of coughs and enquiring about the symptoms the patient is having. If the patient has a bacterial infection that causes coughs, the doctor will recommend some oral antibiotics.

Cough Treatment-
Generally, there is no need to have intense treatment for mild and Acute Coughs as it usually does not harm the body severely at the initial stages. Such mild coughs can be treated at some by consuming fluids and keeping the body hydrated. Taking painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen will also work. However, if the coughs persist for weeks and becoming rigorous day by day, a medical care is required immediately.

Home Remedies for Cough-

1.Treatment of Cough by Honey-
Honey is being used to cure the coughs since the centuries now and is considered as one of the most effective remedies for coughs. Having honey with warm tea, warm lemon water or even with the grape juice helps soothe a sore throat. Drinking honey alone is also quite effective as it coats the throat and lessens the irritation caused by the infection.

Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis - Causes, Symptoms & Diagnosis Of It!

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a allergic manifestation to the fungus Aspergillus sp. Patient with underlying Bronchial Asthma or Cystic Fibrosis are more susceptible to this. The patient may be having severe symptoms of asthma which respond poorly to inhaled medications.

This fungus is very commonly found in the surroundings and is referred to as mold. It is found at various places like soil, water, air and even on decaying matter. This fungus has the characteristic feature of spore formation and these spores are inhaled commonly from the air, without causing any disease or discomfort.

The fungus enters the body and produces colonies by inhabiting the airways. But the presence of Aspergillosis in the lungs does not always indicate an infection. In people with weakened immunity, this fungus enters the lungs and produces an acute infection that spreads along the respiratory tract. An allergic response given by the immune system to the Aspergillus fungi causes the allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis.

In this condition, there is a tightening of the muscles of the airway. There is a build of mucus which causes frequent coughing, obstruction of the airway and difficulty in breathing.

Symptoms of this disease are as follows:

1. Frequent cough

2. Brown colored mucus while coughing

3. Hemoptysis (blood in cough)

4. Difficulty in breathing

5. Wheezing sounds from the chest

6. Lethargy and weakness

7. Tightness of the chest In case of an asthmatic patient, if asthma is in a poorly controlled state, this condition is most likely to develop.

Causes:

People suffering from asthma can contract ABPA when the medications are unable to control asthma. ABPA can also occur with cystic fibrosis which is a condition that has a genetic basis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition is difficult. It is usually diagnosed on the basis of the symptoms experienced by the patient. Certain specific tests like lung function tests (spirometry) can be carried out to evaluate the breathing capacity of the lungs.

An evaluation of the levels of the immunoglobulin IgE is also required. In conditions that are related to allergic responses from the immune system, it is observed that the levels of IgE are raised than above normal.

However, in ABPA the levels of the immunoglobulin IgE rise to a very high count. Monitoring of the IgE levels is done regularly during the management of ABPA. Chest x- rays do not help in the diagnosis of this disease. While treating ABPA, the evaluation of the immunoglobulin levels is done regularly. To relieve inflammation corticosteroids can be given.

Treatment of ABPA is Oral corticosteroids and in case of steroid dependence or persistent symptoms consider adding antifungal. Also, to treat the fungal infection, anti-fungal medications are prescribed. Repeated episodes of ABPA require more targeted treatment. Itraconazole is the anti-fungal drug which is effective in treating the fungal infection.
