Hyper Pigmentation - Things You Should Be Aware Of!

Every girl dreams of blemish-free skin that glows and can remain youthful forever. However, this remains a dream for many. Most people are unhappy with their skin as they combat various common issues such as dark spots, hyperpigmentation, etc.

The skin has a pigment known as melanin in the underlying layers, which gives our skin its color. Greater the amount of melanin, darker is a person’s complexion. Hyperpigmentation is when there are some areas of the skin that are darker than the other. This is not just an aesthetic issue but also an issue that can affect a person’s morale and self-esteem.

Read on to know some of the most common causes of hyperpigmentation and ways to manage them:

  1. Acne scars: While every girl has to go through teenage years with hormone surges and cheeks adorned with pimples, for some, the trauma does not seem to end with teenage. People who suffer from acne even in their 20s and 30s will have acne marks which can be darker than their natural skin tone. Acne scars can be treated by a combination of topical creams, laser, and changes in diet to reduce the further incidence of acne.
  2. Sun exposure: There is no escape from the sun; however, the exposure can be reduced as most skin problems are caused by excessive unprotected exposure to the sun. From sunburn to melasma to melanomas, hyperpigmentation is the first indication of sun damage and can even be cancerous. It is essential to adequately protect from the sun including the use of sunglasses, sunscreen, long sleeves, scarf, and a cap or hat.
  3. Dermatitis: Skin infection, most commonly caused by fungal infections, can also be present as darker areas on the skin that start off as small patches and then increase in size. Some dermatitis conditions are autoimmune but present as dark patches that gradually increase in size and shape and progress to cover various parts of the body.
  4. Skin cancers: Melanomas are more common in white skin and brown and black skin types are relatively protected from this particular type of cancer due to the presence of a pigment called 'melanin' which is responsible for the specific complexion. While acne is treatable, but starting a good skin care regimen early on in life has its benefits. Avoid excessive use of chemicals, eat healthy and fresh, avoid excessive oils and junk food, and see your skin change.
  5. Freckles: These are caused by clusters of melanin. These get accumulated or concentrated in clusters on being exposed to sunrays.
  6. Melasma: This is usually found in pregnant women. It occurs due to the over-activation of melanocytes as there is a hormonal imbalance.
  7. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This refers to inflammation as a result of inflammation caused by trauma.

Consult your dermatologist to know the exact reason for pigmentation and the best way to treat it.

Hyperpigmentation - Know Ways Of Tackling It At Home!

Hyperpigmentation of the skin can lead to dark patches and uneven skin colour, and it is caused by excessive melanin production. It can affect any part of the body, including the arms, legs, hands and even face. The root cause behind excessive melanin production is normally due to hormonal alterations in the body and other health issues. External factors like skin injury, burning, stress, chemical contact and even excessive sun exposure may lead to hyperpigmentation.

But there is nothing to worry about; you can easily eliminate these with some natural techniques.

  1. Lemon: This is the most common yet effective home treatment to eradicate hyperpigmentation. The natural bleaching agent helps in fading away of blemishes present on the skin. But in case you have sensitive skin, it is recommended to dilute the lime juice with some water before application.
  2. Raw potato: Spots and blemishes can be easily removed by applying raw potato juice on the affected area. Potatoes are rich in catecholase, an enzyme which is believed to help in skin lightening. So you may apply raw potato juice twice daily on the affected area to aid fading of hyperpigmentation.
  3. Apple cider vinegar: When it comes to lessening the hyperpigmentation of your skin, nothing can beat the efficacy of apple cider vinegar. If you have been suffering from dark patches all over your skin, then consider applying apple cider vinegar to the affected area owing to its astringent properties, which may restore the natural colour of your skin.
  4. Vitamin E: Referred to as skin vitamin, this is an obvious way to treat hyperpigmentation. Vitamin E is also an antioxidant, and it aids in neutralizing the harmful effects of sun rays while repairing and protecting the skin. You can put the contents of the Vitamin E capsules in a bowl and mix it with ripe papaya or fuller’s earth or rose water and mix to form a paste with a thick consistency. Then you will have to apply it on the affected areas and wash it off after complete drying.
  5. Turmeric: This natural ingredient has bleaching properties that help in eliminating hyperpigmentation of the skin. In addition to this, turmeric helps in keeping the skin protected from infections. You can mix turmeric paste with lemon juice and apply on the pigmented area. Alternatively, you can apply turmeric paste with milk and then wash it with lukewarm water after some time.

With these few natural treatments, you will be able to curb down the hyperpigmentation of your skin. However, if you see no commendable results, then it’s probably time to visit a dermatologist.

Microdermabrasion - Know All About It!

Microdermabrasion - Know All About It!

Microdermabrasion is a quick and painless treatment that accelerates the rate at which dead skin is exfoliated, and jump-starts the proliferation of new skin cells. Your dermatologist may recommend a series of microdermabrasion treatments, which can treat hyperpigmentation, sun-damaged spots, dryness, fine lines and wrinkles and even minor acne scars. Microdermabrasion can be coupled with just about any other type of skin treatment and is usually recommended to be done every few weeks to every two or three months.

Suitable for all but the most sensitive skins, microdermabrasion combines vacuum suction with tiny abrasive crystals to polish away the uppermost layer of skin, eliminating roughness as well as fine lines and wrinkles. It is a quick and virtually pain-free procedure that uses tiny, rough aluminium crystals to vigorously exfoliate the top layer of the skin, removing dead skin cells.

How is a microdermabrasion procedure performed?

Most often, your microdermabrasion treatment will be performed by a licensed skincare professional in your plastic surgeon's office or medical spa.

There are two general methods for microdermabrasion:

Crystal Microdermabrasion: For this type of microdermabrasion, a handpiece emits crystals onto the surface of the skin, resulting in a gentle abrasion or "polishing" process. Then the dead skin cells along with the crystals are suctioned off either instantaneously (in the same handpiece) or in a secondary process.

Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion: This type of microdermabrasion works with a diamond-tip handpiece that gently abrades and exfoliates dead skin cells. Like the crystal microdermabrasion, the dead skin is either suctioned off right away in the same handpiece or in a secondary process. The diamond-tip microdermabrasion is safer to perform closer to the eyes and has more flexibility in sensitive areas or on more sensitive skin.?

Ideal Candidates:

Microdermabrasion works best for anyone looking to revitalize their skin. If you have any of these conditions, you are a candidate for microdermabrasion:

  1.  Fine lines and wrinkles
  2.  Hyperpigmentation or sun spots
  3.  Dry skin
  4.  Minor acne scars
  5.  Blemishes or large pores

Acne:

Acne is a skin condition that leads to the outbreak of pimples and sores as well as whiteheads and blackheads. These have a reddish appearance and make the skin look less than ideal. With the help of microdermabrasion, one can gradually reduce the appearance of light scarring and make the skin look even toned.

Rosacea:

This is an inflammation-based skin condition which leads to the appearance of prominent blood vessels as well as other kinds of skin eruptions. Microdermabrasion can come to the rescue of the patient who is suffering from severe symptoms of this condition.

When to Avoid Microdermabrasion:

This procedure should be avoided by people who have sustained deep scars. Also, anyone who has active keloids and lesions that are yet to be diagnosed should avoid this treatment as it may lead to an aggravation. Further, anyone who is suffering from an immune system disorder or diabetes should also avoid this kind of treatment as it may lead to complications. If you have had a chemical peel recently, you should also steer clear of this kind of treatment as it may lead to inflammation, swelling and bleeding on the skin which is already tender from the previous treatment.

How To Create a Flawless, Blemish-Free Complexion?

How To Create a Flawless, Blemish-Free Complexion?

We all love that perfectly glowing skin that has no marks or signs of ageing like moles, tags, fine lines, dark circles and many others. However, for most of us, this remains an imaginary picture that we have in mind. What stares back at us in the mirror has some of the above-noted features, in various combinations. However, the desire for that blemish-free skin without any of these continues and is actually not far from reality too.

Some major irritants causing skin scars are as follows:

  1. Vascular marks including thread veins and broken capillaries.
  2. Spider nevus is a spider-web-like structure with a central vessel and surrounding capillaries dilated radiating away from it. Similarly, blood spots are red, vascular spots that come with ageing.
  3. Skin tags or milia or warts, these are harmless but esthetically concerning and can irritate if found in an area where it interferes with the garments
  4. Age spots or brown spots that occur due to sun exposure are also harmless but are esthetic concern.

With esthetics attaining such importance, new ways are constantly being identified to help people improve their looks. While there are various creams and lotions and serums with promises of various chemicals that can do wonders, there actually are procedures that have a scientific basis and can produce results more quickly and effectively. The following are some popular advanced cosmetic procedures (ACPs) that can help clear these blemishes and produce a spotless, clear skin.

  1. Chemical peels: This is an exfoliation process done in the clinic, by removing the top layers of rough skin, thereby, making space for new skin to grow. It stimulates growth of collagen and elastin, and promoting new skin growth. It can also be combined with topical antioxidants such as tretinoin and vitamin C, which are proven beneficial for the skin.
  2. Dermabrasion: Used in a variety of conditions (acne, wrinkles, blemishes), it works on layers that are far deeper than a chemical peel. A rotating brush is used to remove the upper layers of the skin, leaving the underlying layers open. The removed layers of the skin may form a scab and can be mildly painful. The doctor may decide to use a mild local anesthetic if required.
  3. Laser skin resurfacing: The skin has an upper thicker layer and an inner thinner layer. A small amount of laser is applied to the underlying layers to stimulate them to produce collagen. The top layers are kept cool with a gel. The extra collagen produces improves elasticity and produces younger looking skin, removing all blemishes.

All these are equally proven ways to treat blemishes. The decision of choosing one particular method should be completely based on your expectations.

In-depth Knowledge About Skin Moles And Its Removal!

Depending on the way you look at it, a mole can be a beauty spot or a blemish. For most people, facial moles are undesired. Moles can be described as clusters of pigmented skin cells. They appear in the form of dark spots on the skin that vary in size, color and texture. Apart from the face, moles appear commonly on the arms and legs but can affect any part of the body. In most cases, moles are harmless but in some cases, they may turn precancerous and need to be removed. However, most moles are removed for only cosmetic reasons. Moles can be removed through home remedies, surgery or laser treatment.

Mole removal depends on the type, size and location of the mole. When treated with lasers, layers of the mole are removed one by one by evaporating the affected cells. This does not cause any sort of bleeding and does not disturb healthy tissues adjacent to the mole. It is also considered to be a largely pain-free procedure but you may feel a slight tingling sensation. After the laser procedure, a scab forms over the affected area which later falls off. You may also notice slight swelling and redness in the area for a few days after the procedure.

Laser treatment for mole removal has a number of advantages.

  1. As it is a non-invasive procedure, there are minimal chances of infection
  2. Multiple moles can be treated in a single session
  3. Laser beams can reach parts of the face, nose and ears that may be difficult to reach through other procedures.
  4. There are minimal disturbance and injury to the adjacent healthy tissues
  5. Healing is much faster than with other procedures
  6. There is a very low chance of scarring

However, one of the biggest disadvantages of laser therapy is that it can only be used to treat surface moles as the laser beam cannot penetrate deep into the skin. Also, laser treatment, if not recommended in cases where the mole may be considered precancerous as the laser beam will destroy the mole leaving nothing that can be used for a biopsy. Lasers are also seldom used to treat large moles or birthmarks. The cost of removing a mole with laser treatment depends on the size, location and number of moles. In some cases, more than one session may be required and this too could influence the cost of the procedure.

Age Spots - 9 Things You Should Try To Get Rid Of Them!

The skin is the largest organ in the body and the first to be affected by any condition, be it good or bad. As it is said, a close look at the skin can tell all about the overall health of the person.

Age spots are little, flat, brown spots that are an indication of serious underlying conditions. They are most common on the face, neck and hands. With regular metabolism, the free radical damage in the body produces lipofuscin. This accumulates, leading to the gradual destruction of the body's cells including vital organs like liver, brain and heart. These brown age spots are therefore a cause of concern and should be attended to immediately.

The good news, however, is that there are ways to prevent and even reverse these age spots. It not only has cosmetic benefits but improves overall health by reducing and eliminating wastes. Read on to know some common, effective ways to beat these spots. The treatment works on two levels that are generally where the whole body is covered and topical where the skin is worked upon.

General Application:

  1. Diet: Eat a diet rich in fiber, containing fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds. This will provide various minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and other nutrients for your body. Avoid animal-based proteins, fried oily foods, excessive sugars and salt and processed foods. Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake.
  2. Exercise: A good workout helps to remove toxins, thereby reducing the likelihood of age spots appearing in the first place. It can also help reverse the effects of ageing that has already set in.
  3. Stay hydrated: While moisturizers do have a good role to play, it cannot hydrate the body from within. Plenty of water is required also to flush out toxins and wastes from the body, which can accelerate ageing.
  4. Topical: In addition to general measures, the following topical measures are useful in beating the age spots.
  5. Cleansing the skin: Skin is constantly exposed to dust and heat and pollution and frequent cleaning, even with plain water, will work wonders.
  6. Scrubbing the skin: A good scrub, be it from the shelves or made at home, is a good effective way to further clean the skin of dead cells and making way for fresh cells to emerge.
  7. Sun Protection: It is believed that 90% of the skin damage happens due to exposure to the sun. Using a sunscreen goes a long way in preventing skin damage including spots, dark circles and even cancer.
  8. Moisturizing the skin: Using honey, glycerin, or any other product that hydrates the skin will have long-term benefits in reducing ageing.
  9. Antioxidant creams: There are proven creams and natural products that contain antioxidants and control ageing of the skin, thereby reducing age spots.
