World Oral Health Day - Know More About It

In 2007, it was first declared that World Oral Health Day would be celebrated on 12th September, the birthday of FDI founder Dr. Charles Godon. In 2013, after full activation of the campaign, 20th March came to be known as the World Oral Health Day.

Why 20th March?

The date was chosen quite strategically by the Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI) and here are the things that it represents –

  • Children should have 20 baby teeth

  • Seniors should have 20 natural teeth towards the end of their lives to be considered healthy

  • Healthy adults should have 32 teeth and 0 dental cavities

Hence the date 20/3.

World Oral Health Day 2020 theme

Every year, World Oral Health Day is celebrated following a particular theme. The theme for this year is ‘Unite for Mouth Health’.

What does ‘Oral Health’ consist of?

Oral Health consists of the following –

  • Healthy gums

  • Healthy teeth

  • Being able to speak, smile, taste, chew, swallow, smile without pain

  • Being able to speak, smile, taste, chew, swallow, smile with confidence

  • Being free of any disease of the craniofacial complex (relating to the cranium and the face)

What are some oral diseases and conditions?

According to a 2016 study by the Global Burden of Disease, oral diseases affect around 3.58 billion people all over the world. As per the World Health Organization, there are seven types of oral diseases and conditions, which plague most humans –

A microbial biofilm, also known as plaque, forms on the tooth surface and results in gradual decay. It converts free sugars from food into acid that dissolves the tooth enamel and the dentine. This can lead to infection and tooth loss if not taken care of.

  • Periodontal (gum) disease

This disease affects the tissue that surrounds and supports the tooth. It results in gingivitis (swollen or bleeding gums), bad breath, pain, and periodontitis (loosening of teeth). Severe tooth loss and edentulism (zero natural teeth remaining) was one of the top reasons for YLD (Years Lived with Disability) in quite a few high-income countries.

This includes cancer of the oral cavity, oropharynx and is mostly brought about by the usage of betel quid (areca nut), alcohol, and tobacco. Over five people in India die every hour due to oral cancer.

  • Oral manifestation of HIV infection

About 30 to 80% of people with HIV suffer from various oral problems like oral candidiasis (infections), oral HIV lesions, etc.

  • Oro-dental trauma

It is an impact injury to the teeth and/or surrounding soft and hard tissues.

  • Noma

It is a necrotizing disease, which affects children suffering from malnutrition. It is fatal in 90% of cases.

This mostly happens due to genetic predisposition. However, tobacco consumption and poor maternal nutrition are also contributing factors.

What are some of the pledges that people are making for the 2020 World Oral Health Day?

Motivated by various oral health campaigns, more and more people are now pledging to the following –

  • Brush their teeth even when they are too tired

  • Cut down on sugary treats

  • Keep their mouth and body healthy

  • Always keep their mouth clean

  • Keep the mouth healthy all their life

  • Inspire others to look after their mouth

  • Make time to go to the dentist

  • Encourage people to keep smiling all their lives

This 20th March, join the cause, make a pledge of your own and empower a hundred others to strive towards oral health.

Microwave Cooking - How Secure Is It?

Microwave cooking is done through a process called radiation. Through light radiation, heat is produced, which helps in cooking the food at a specific temperature. For every food item; there is an absolute temperature which helps to prepare that food evenly. Since the cooking is done through radiation, the cooking time is reduced by 1/3rd of the regular cooking time. Microwave cooking process is both time-saving and energy-efficient.

But the question is is it really healthy to cook your food in a microwave? Although the microwave is used widely across the globe, owing to the time saving and hassle-free features, it is the most preferred gadget for the kitchen. However, many people have doubts that this fast cooking zaps the food of all the nutrients.

The food cooked through radiation is often considered unhealthy as any kind of radiation is harmful to our body. Below are some points mentioned, which will help you make a wiser choice:

  • The non-ionizing radiation of the microwave increases the number of white blood cells along with cholesterol levels, resulting in changes in blood cells and heart rate.
  • A microwave produces 2.4GHz radiation, which instantly affects the heart rate and heart rate variability. If you are experiencing an irregular heartbeat or eating microwave cooked food on a regular basis, the time has now come for you to stop this habit today.

Technology has undoubtedly made our lives easier; they are economical, energy-efficient and time-saving. But excessive use of technology can harm us in ways that can't be imagined. Eating microwave cooked food can be dangerous as the heating is done through the radiation process which is not suitable for the human body. Also, the nutrients present in the food items are destroyed during heating, you can just feel full when you eat the microwave cooked food, nut without any nutrients. Hence, the time has come for you to stop eating the microwaved meal or at least lessen the intake of microwaved food to live a healthy life and maintain a proper diet.

Lichen Planus - Everything About It!

What is Lichen Planus?

Lichen planus is a skin rash triggered by the immune system. It’s not known why the immune response occurs. There may be several contributing factors, and each case is different. Potential causes include:

-viral infections
-allergens
-stress
-genetics

Sometimes lichen planus occurs along with autoimmune disorders. While it may be uncomfortable, in most cases lichen planus is not a serious condition. It’s also not contagious.
However, there are some rare variations of the condition that may be serious and painful. These conditions can be treated with topical and oral medications to reduce symptoms, or by using drugs that suppress the immune system.

Causes:

When planus develops when your body attacks your skin or mucous membrane cells by mistake. Doctors are not sure why this happens.

Lichen planus can occur in anyone at any age, but there are certain factors that make some people more likely to develop the condition. The skin form of lichen planus occurs in men and women equally, but women are twice as likely to get the oral form. It’s very rare in children and older adults. It’s most common in middle-aged people.

Other risk factors include having family members who’ve had lichen planus, having a viral disease like hepatitis C, or being exposed to certain chemicals that act as allergens. These allergens may include:

-antibiotics
-arsenic
-gold
-iodide compounds
-diuretics
-certain kinds of dyes
-Other medications

Symptoms:

Some of the most common symptoms of lichen planus include the following:

-purplish-colored lesions or bumps with flat tops on your skin or genitals
-lesions that develop and spread over the body over the course of several weeks or a few months
-itching at the site of the rash
-lacy-white lesions in the mouth, which may be painful or cause a burning sensation
-blisters, which burst and become scabby
-thin white lines over the rash
-The most common type of lichen planus affects the skin. Over the course of several weeks, lesions appear and spread. The condition usually clears up within 6 to 16 months.

Less commonly, the lesions can occur in areas besides the skin or genitals. These may include:

-mucous membranes
-nails
-the scalp

There are also variations of the condition more common in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Diagnosis:

Anytime you see or feel a rash on your skin or lesions in your mouth or on your genitals, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. Your primary care doctor may send you to a dermatologist if a diagnosis of lichen planus is not obvious, or if your symptoms are making you very uncomfortable.

Your primary care doctor or dermatologist may be able to tell that you have lichen planus simply by looking at your rash. To confirm the diagnosis, you may need further tests.

Tests could include a biopsy, which means taking a small sample of your skin cells to view under a microscope, or an allergy test to find out if you’re having an allergic reaction. If your doctor suspects the underlying cause is an infection, you may need to have a test for hepatitis

Role Of Homeopathy In Lichen Planus:

Homeopathic treatment for Lichen Planus involves getting the complete and detailed information from you  about your Lichen Planus eruptions and coming to customised Homeopathic medicines for Lichen Planus for you. This will be the only right homeopathic medicine of Lichen Planus for you, which will give you long term relief and permanent cure, made easy through our CUREplus treatment protocol available exclusively at Welling Homeopathic Clinics and our online treatment platform for our global patients

Diet And Non-Diet:

-spinach, raw and cooked
-canned pineapple
-many boxed cereals
-dried fruit
-rhubarb
-rice bran
-bran flakes
