Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) - Ways To Prevent It!

UTI is a bacterial infection of the urinary tract. Recurrent UTI or chronic UTI if remain untreated can even lead to an organ failure. UTI is the second most common infection in the body. In reproductive age, there is a 10 fold increase in incidence in women than in men.

Why?

  • Short urethra
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Close proximity of urethral opening to the areas like vagina and vulva which are contaminated heavily with bacteria
  • Recurrent vaginal infection

You may be suffering from UTI if:

  1. You feel a pain in pelvis while urinating
  2. You feel the need to urinate again and again and despite urgency you manage to pee only little
  3. You feel burning while urinating or you have to stop urination in between because of excessive burning
  4. Urine appears red or cloudy or bright pink with strong smell.

In severe infection, you may suffer from fever with chills, nausea and vomiting. Bad hygiene, sexual intercourse, recurrent vaginal infections, dehydration, holding urine for too long, pregnancy, catheterization while surgery, hypo-estrogenic state like menopause, having diabetes mellitus are some reasons and predisposing factors behind UTI.

If you feel any of the symptoms of UTI you must visit doctor and get urine microscopic examination done. To get proper result patient should collect midstream urine sample in sterile container after washing the private parts.

In chronic or recurring UTI, more extended investigation protocols like intravenous pyelography, cystoscopy (endoscopy of urinary bladder via urethra) are indicated.

Prevention

  • The urge for urination should not be suppressed.
  • Drinking water helps dilute your urine and ensures that you'll urinate more frequently — allowing bacteria to be flushed from your urinary tract before an infection can begin.
  • Wipe from front to back. Doing so after urinating and after a bowel movement helps prevent bacteria in the anal region from spreading to the vagina and urethra.
  • Empty your bladder soon after intercourse.
  • Change your birth control method. Diaphragms or unlubricated or spermicide-treated condoms can contribute to bacterial growth.
  • Don't use feminine deodorants. These sprays can irritate your genital area and increase your risk of UTI.
  • Wear cotton underwear. Cotton fabric allows moisture escape while other fabrics can trap moisture, which creates a potential breeding ground for bacteria. Also, avoid tight-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid vaginal dryness
  • Get help for recurrent UTI.
  • Avoid intake of hot, oily, spicy, sour, salty, and bitter foods.
  • Increase intake of liquids in the form of water, juices, coconut water, and other cooling drinks.
  • Increase intake of pitta-pacifying herbs like green cardamom, coriander, licorice root, black resins, gulkand and kokam syrup etc.
  • Alcohol and coffee should be forbidden.
  • Coriander and cumin seed water: Soak coriander and cumin seeds overnight in 6 times water. Drink 30 to 50 ml water next morning after sieving or filtering. Prepare fresh every day.
  • Punarnavashtak kwath, Varunadi kwath, Chandrakala rasa, Chandraprabha vati etc are some of the ayurvedic medicines which are used treat UTI, those should be taken under proper guidance, if you suffer from UTI.

Infertility - Have Ayurveda At Your Rescue!

Fertility is a potential for reproduction. In other words, fertility is an ability to have babies or to reproduce. When fertility rate in a community, increases more babies are born. To produce an offspring it depends on age, health and other factors of the woman. When we talk about fertility rates it means the number of births that happen during a certain time period in a specific location. On the other end, lack of ability to reproduce is termed as infertility. There are various treatments to deal with fertility issues and one of the ancient and natural as well as a trusted treatment is Ayurveda.

Causes
Female infertility is caused due to structural problems like blocked fallopian tubes, a defect in cervical canal, uterine fibroids or polyps. Hormonal imbalance leading to ovulation problems too can cause infertility. In males. infertility may have anatomical, psychological, hormonal or lifestyle related causes. The cause of infertility in approximately 20% of couples can't be determined using the currently available methods of investigation. From Ayurvedic perspectives, shukra dhatu can get affected by various physical, mental causes and even by serious diseases. Poor quality shukra dhatu can cause infertility in males & females.

Ayurveda For Infertility

Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body and Spirit. The primary focus of Ayurvedic medicine is to promote good health, rather than fight disease. Fertility problems are increasing these days for many young couples. There are many factors which account for this like Lifestyle, delayed marriages, diet, etc. But Ayurveda not only does explain how to increase fertility with herbal supplements, but it also focuses on how to have healthy children.

For a pregnancy to be healthy and successful, a couple needs to take care of the following four essential factors:

  1. Sperm/Ovum (Seeds)
  2. Uterus (Soil)
  3. Nourishment (Water)
  4. Time for Conception (Timing of Sowing)

Reproductive health, in both men and women, depends on the health of the reproductive tissue or shukra dhatu. In women, shukra creates the ovum as part of the monthly cycle, and in men, the semen is formed due to sexual stimulation. The shukra is created as part of a long chain of metabolic transformations. It starts with the digestion of food, then goes on to the transformation of food to nutrient fluid, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow, and finally, to shukra tissue. Healthy shukra tissue, then, according to Ayurveda, depends on the health of all the other tissues in the body.

Treatment:

For female infertility, the Ayurveda experts use a lot of egg stimulation medicines like ghrit, rasayan and many more to help the patient in conceiving.

Diet Tips To Maintain A Healthy Gut!

Contrary to popular belief, not all bacteria are harmful to us. Within our body, each 'human' cell is complemented by 10 microbial cells. These range from bacteria in the gut to viruses and fungi in other parts of the body. Gut bacteria help us to digest food, produce vitamins, communicate with the immune system and create small molecules that help the brain to function.

Thus, it is essential to have a healthy gut, by which we mean a gut with plenty of friendly bacteria. There are many different types of bacteria living in the gut. Each of these thrive on different foods. Thus to have a healthy gut, your diet should include a variety of cereals, fruits, and vegetables, etc. Here are a few tips to keep your gut bacteria healthy.

  1. Increase your fiber intake: A diet that is rich in fiber is the best way to promote the growth of diverse microbes in the gut. This includes fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, cereals and nuts. Fiber also helps prevent constipation and has been linked to lowering the risk of cancer. To prevent the buildup of gas and bloating it is advisable to increase intake of fiber and drink plenty of water with all your meals.
  2. Include probiotic foods in your diet: Probiotics need not only be taken in the form of supplements. This can easily be incorporated into your daily diet. These can be defined as live bacteria and yeasts that help the digestive system. Yogurt is one of the most common sources of probiotics. Kimchi or fermented vegetables, miso, cheese, buttermilk, fermented condiments and lentil sprouts are other examples of probiotic foods you should include in your diet.
  3. Try having some carminatives in your meals: Carminative foods soothe the digestive system of the body. Some common carminatives are cuminginger, oatmeal, cardamomcinnamon and fennel. While cumin helps with the digestion of black beans, cooked oatmeal lines the stomach and soothes it.
  4. Eat weight loss friendly food: Being overweight not only affects how you look, but also affects the digestion process. When you lose weight one of the first things you would notice is a lowered amount of abdominal discomfort as your gut begins to feel healthier.

This is because weight loss lowers the pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter. This does not allow the valve to open more than necessary and hence prevents food and stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus. Along with increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables, switch your cooking oil to olive oiland notice the difference.

How To Detox This Navratra?

How to detox this navratri?

1st. Cook right: kuttu can be used to make dosa, uttapam and rotis instead of poori and parantha. Steamed idli of kuttu and samai is a healthy breakfast and snack option. Makhanas can be roasted with sendha namak instead of frying, or used as a kheer to satiate your sweet tooth.

2nd use healthier alternatives: processed sugar can be replaced with jaggery (gur) or honey. Spices are a power house of antioxidants and protective foods. They add health and taste to food as well as aiding in digestion. Jeera (cumin, elaichi (cardamom) and dhania (coriander seeds) are known for their carminative action.

3 rdchoose healthy when eating out. Try upma made with samai or a simple pulao with a fruit raita to finish. Sago khichdi, with meetha pumpkin subzi is another alternative. Want something exotic? quinoa and amaranth salads are a great meal choice. Grilled paneer tikka and baked potato are delicious snacks which won’t hurt your detox plan.

4th break your fast with something healthy and light: some of us follow the path of one meal a day during this period. In such a situation, break your fast with some fruits or nuts. Warm lauki soup or fresh coconut water are light on the stomach and replenish fluid and electrolytes. Just because you have fasted through the day doesn’t mean that you eat through the night. Have a light meal with vegetables, dahi and some cereal grains.

5th eat regular meals: eat at about the same time daily, it makes the digestion more efficient and helps the body utilize food energy effectively. This helps keep up your energy levels, keep exhaustion at bay and prevents bingeing.

6th drink right: the weather is still warm, and the body needs to be kept hydrated. In our celebratory mode, we forget to drink adequate fluids. Low calorie fluids like fresh lemon water, for its vitamin c (a natural antioxidant), and coconut water with its sodium, potassium and calcium, rehydrate and cleanse. Green tea is a rich source of catechin, a strong antioxidant, making it a perfect drink to detox. But do not forget water, the best drink for our body!
