Autism - How Ayurveda Can Help In It?

Autism is defined as a neuro biological pervasive development disorder that includes lack of social skills and inability to reciprocate to social interactions. The patient may also have intellectual and cognitive deficits and problems in communication (verbal as well as non-verbal).

Ayurveda, the oldest study of medicine, has proved to be very effective when it comes to managing and treating those affected by autism. The earlier an autistic person resorts to Ayurveda, the more effective it is.
Ayurvedic drink recipe for treating the symptoms of autism: (should be taken daily)

1. 1/3 cup of yogurt
2. 3/4 cup of water
3. Cumin
4. Coriander and
5. Ginger

Ayurveda in Curbing Aggression:

Autism includes heightened aggression and aversion from social interaction due to a neurological condition that impairs the functioning of the brain. Not all autistic patients are violent towards others but may express their frustration by self-harm and emotional outbursts. One can curb these emotional outbursts by taking herbal supplements. An Ayurvedic herb called Brahmi (BacopaMonneiri) which is known for its, anti-anxiety, neuroprotective and antioxidant properties can help considerably.

Regular massages using sandalwood, rose, lavender and gotu kola oils is also very calming and relieving, because it stimulates the blood flow and neuron responses. Massage also helps in increasing eye contact and social relatedness, less stereotypic behavior and improved sleep.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Autism:

It also helps in performing complex tasks such as comprehension, reasoning and learning.
2. Ashwagandha - Scientifically known as WithaniaSomneifera, Ashwaganda has high affinity for gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. Low GABA activity is related to cognitive impairment.

4. Centella Asiatica - This ayurvedic herb is used as a medication for insanity, speech disorders and epilepsy making it a very useful drug for treating autism.

Autism Spectrum - How Homeopathy Can Help Your Child?

One of the best pleasures of life is to watch a child grow up and begin to learn and explore new things in the surroundings. However, children affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or autism may not be able to do this at the same pace as other kids. They are a little slow to respond and may not socialise very easily.

ASD is a collective term used for a range of symptoms, including poor verbal and nonverbal communication, poor social skills, repetitive behaviour, and impaired learning abilities. The onset and severity of symptoms also vary across children. While some show symptoms in preschool, others would be completely normal and start showing symptoms after a couple of years of schooling. The following are some symptoms that indicate the child could have autism.

  1. Lack of babbling by 9 months of age
  2. No response when called by their name even after 12 months of age
  3. Not uttering single words by the age of 16 months, two words by 24 months
  4. Lack of social skills including resistance to cuddling, not mingling with other kids
  5. Self-injurious behaviour like banging head on the wall, hurting a toy, etc.

Homeopathy offers safe, effective remedy for children with autism. Treatment regime is highly customised based on underlying and accompanying symptoms of each patient. The following are commonly used ingredients; however, self-medication is best avoided.

  1. Agaricus: The child talks and sings but does not respond. There is indifference, fearlessness, shouting, constant jerking of the head, difficulty reading, possible double vision and feels awkward physically and mentally.
  2. Carcinosin: The child is obstinate and has compulsive obsessive tendencies. It is hyperactive, does not sleep, has addictive tendencies, and likes to drink milk which worsens the symptoms.
  3. Androctonus: The child is destructive, suspicious, mischievous, but very quick to respond. The child behaves very well at times and can be very naughty at other times.
  4. Helleborus: The child is generally weak, slow to respond, appears thoughtless, often stares into air, and looks depressed with involuntary sighing and habit of lip biting. Sight, hearing, and taste could be affected.
  5. Cuprum Metallicum: The child is extremely tense, irritable, rigid, malicious, and very difficult to handle. Does not like to be touched or spoken to or played with. Can be aggressive with the parents, driving them to despair.

May have tics infestation on the scalp.
Another recent approach is the CEASE (Complete Elimination Autism Spectrum Expression) Therapy. This combines homoeopathy with orthomolecular medicines that provide the required nutrition for brain development (vitamins, minerals, Omega 3 fatty acids, etc.) This helps in overall brain development and restoring function in affected children. As noted, the right potency of these products will determine the response to treatment.

Autism In Children - Signs & Symptoms To Watch Out For!

Children should be brought up with utmost care. A child should not be your centre of attraction only because it is incapable to fend for itself, but also because it is not half as aware as you are or could be about its problems. Parents punish their children for the slightest of their mistakes; they at times even threaten children to bring home a lesson. Patience and observation are two key things in good parenting. The foibles of your child might indicate at an underlying medical condition. Instead of fixating over the mistakes try and locate the root cause. Early diagnosis of autism can save your child from a bleak future.

The following are a few symptoms of autism in children:

1. Social interaction is a huge challenge: Children suffering from autism are usually noticed to live in a world of their own. They hardly listen to people around them or hardly talk. The presence of many people can scare them or make them conscious. When spoken to, they look away. They do not feel comfortable in revealing their joys or fears. Autistic children like to play alone; they are not interested in group activities with friends.

2. Difficulties in communicating their needs: Communication is the biggest problem autistic children seem to face regularly. They are not able to express their needs and emotions. If they are hungry they might scream or break things but not ask for food. They even fail to comprehend instructions and seem confounded by simple situations. Their speech could comprise of mumbling. Autism in children could make them develop a condition popularly known as echolalia under the effect of which they mouth words without knowing their meanings in an extremely strange tone.

3. An obsessive, repetitive behavior: Children with autism could be persistent in some of their actions. Their body gestures could be repetitive; for instance, they can continue flapping their arms for hours together. Children in certain cases are also very particular about routine. Quite strikingly, objects affect them and they might scrutinize an object meticulously.

4. Sensory problems: Light sound and touch can have a huge impact on children suffering from autism. Patches of light and shade intrigue them whereas high pitched sounds could depress or intimidate them. They usually prefer deep pressure touch and might not respond to anything else.

Homeopathy For Autism

Being a holistic branch of medicine, homeopathy takes into account the complete physical as well as the mental makeup of the individual. Additionally, in this alternative medicine, the homeopath also takes into consideration the details of the disease while recommending remedies. Remedies like Carcinocin, Secretin and Thuja are favored the most for treating the condition. At the same time, the appropriate remedies are recommended after having a thorough understanding as to whether the individual falls within the constitutional makeup of the remedies considered.

Another essential aspect of this branch of medicine in the treatment of this brain development disorder is the practice of using LM potencies (homeopathic medicines on the last scale of potencies). These remedies are not only acted faster but are also gentler compared to others.

Autism - How Homeopathy Can Handle It?

The human brain is a unique and intricate organ which performs many functions both consciously and subconsciously. However, during the formation of the brain within the mother's womb, the slightest of changes can cause damages to it which manifest in many forms after birth. One of the forms it may manifest in is Autism.

What is Autism?

Autism, sometimes also classified as part of the Autism Spectrum disorder or ASD is a disorder of brain development which will affect a child's capability to interact socially, in communicating through verbal and non verbal means as well as exhibit repetitive behaviors. Some severe cases of these behaviors may also result in self-harm as well.

Other than this some other characteristics may be:

1. Major to minor difficulties in motor co-ordination
2. Intellectual disabilities
3. Attention problems
4. Gastrointestinal problems
5. Sleep related problems among others

How homeopathy can help?

Conventional medicine is mostly used to treat some of the symptoms but is never used to cure or provide remedies for autism. A proper professional homeopath will be able to guide you to get the best results for your child and reduce all the problems of autism, if not outright cure it. Some of the medications that could be used to treat autism are as follows:

1. Carcinosin - This is very helpful in children affected by autism who are talented but are obsessive, compulsive, stubborn and also have sleep related issues. These children may also have addictive disorders.

2. Agaricus - This medication is very good for children who may be mentally and physically awkward and show symptoms like indifference, muttering, talking, shouting or singing but not answering to direct calls or questions. Agaricus is very effective for children who suffer from involuntary jerking when they are awake.

3. Cuprum Metallicum - This works wonders when the child is being very obsessive, angry and is inflexible, tense and is very aggressive towards their parents. Some of these children may even exhibit malicious behaviors and are usually averse to touch or being approached.

4. Androctonus - A child or a patient who tends to swing wildly from a stable god mood to a destructive mode can be calmed down or evened out by Androctonus. These children also exhibit behaviors of suspiciousness and quickness to act on their compulsion.

5. Helleborus - This is a very effective medication when the child is slow and underactive and seems to be depressed most of the time. Some of these children may also have muscular weakness and helleborus is very effective in treating them.

These are only a few examples of how homeopathy can provide remedies for your autistic child and thus is an effective solution. However you may need to consult a homeopathic doctor who can tailor make doses and medications after diagnosing the specific symptoms that you child may be having.

Autism And Art - How To Nurture The Genius Artist In Your Child?

Autism And Art - How To Nurture The Genius Artist In Your Child?

If your child has recently been diagnosed with autism, you must be feeling baffled and disheartened. It is surely upsetting to learn that your beloved child has a serious developmental disorder. Learning about the disorder, and where to seek help may ease your confusion. Autism is a major developmental disorder, which develops in early childhood. Autism primarily impairs a child’s ability to interact and communicate.
Struggles of an autistic child-

  1. Social withdrawal
  2. Repetitive, rigid behavior
  3. Difficulty communicating verbally/non-verbally
  4. Learning disability

Being autistic or artistic-
Despite such problems, most parents of autistic children hold high hopes of wanting to unleash the one talent their child must be gifted with. Most often, the gifted talent is ‘art’. Studies show that in about 90% cases, autistic children possess artistic, creative skills. The finding may be surprising to others, as they can barely imagine how a child with the above traits could possibly be creative.

To quote a parent whose child suffers from autism since age 5- “My son Sam, who is now 15 years old, forced me into rethinking creativity years ago. He was hardly six years old, when I realized he could envision things that I would never imagine. During playtime, I once drew one or two curves on a paper and handed it back to him. I had really expected Sam to scribble a few lines or maybe a disoriented picture. But what my son came up with left me spellbound. Sam had drawn a picture of a bowlful of cereal with a spoon, and a hand pouring milk from a carton. For most people this would probably not mean anything. But being a mother to an autistic child, I was completely in awe of my son’s artistic skills.”

How to nurture your child’s ‘hidden talent’?
The question remains - Can such creative skills be discovered in your child too? The answer to the question is ‘Yes!’ Here is how you too can help your child cope with autism-

  1. Don’t limit your child: Allow your child to express his thoughts through creativity, art, music. His/her imagination should know no bounds. Sit by their side and watch them learn using different colors, shapes, and forms.
  2. Let your child thrive: Holding back your child will not help him/her come out of their shell. Your child may have difficulty learning things in school, or going through books. But he/she may have a knack for paintings, or solving puzzles. Encourage their artistic skills, and watch them grow.
  3. Intent healing for your child: A couple of sessions of Intent Healing for both the parent and the child can help manage autism. Ideally, 6 sessions of this therapy for the child and 2 sessions for the mother is recommended.

More than conventional treatment, autistic children need the support and affection of their parents. By adopting the above measures, you can assure your child’s speedy recovery.

About 1 Lakh Children Died Of Air Pollution in 2016 - Wake Up Now!

About 1 Lakh Children Died Of Air Pollution in 2016 - Wake Up Now!

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, out of 194 countries, India recorded the highest death rate of children below five years due to indoor and outdoor air pollution. This report also estimated that India has the second highest death rate overall due to air pollution, after Nigeria.

Another report, titled, "Air Pollution and Child Health", estimated that in 2016 approximately 100,000 children (below 5 years) died due to respiratory complications caused by outdoor and indoor air pollution.

According to WHO, about 98% of children below 5 years are exposed to PM 2.5 pollutants in India that exceed normal pollutant levels. These small particles are capable of entering the bloodstream and cause many acute lower respiratory diseases.

This study also estimated that high levels of Polycyclic Aromatic, Carcinogenic Compound and Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been seen in the sample of women's breasts. This is one of the reasons behind pollutants entering bodies of lactating children.

Diseases Caused Among Children Due to Air Pollution

The report also stated that most of the children who are exposed to these pollutants have respiratory diseases like Leukaemia, Retinoblastoma, Otitis Media, Asthma, Nutritional Deficiency, Vitamin D Deficiency, etc. WHO reports have also established that exposure to these pollutants can lead to many behavioural disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, insulin resistance, and obesity.

  1. Deficiency of Vitamin D: Children who are continuously exposed to air pollutants are at risk of deficiency of Vitamin D. Deficiency of Vitamin D caused many diseases and lower the nutritional level of the body.
  2. Weak Immune System: Exposure to pollutants can even affect the immune system. High pollutants can alter the ability of the Immune System and lead to disturbance in the Hormonal System.
  3. Asthma: One of the main problems that occur in adults as well as children due to pollution is Asthma. It lowers the breathing rate of children.
  4. Pneumonia: Inhaling air with pollutants can block the nasal passage and cause Pneumonia.
  5. Leukaemia and Retinoblastoma: Exposing a high concentration of pollutants may also lead to many serious issues like Leukaemia (Blood Cancer) or Retinoblastoma (Eye Cancer).
  6. Lung and Brain Development: Weak immune systems and nutritional deficiencies can also affect the development of organs like Lung and Brain. High pollutant concentration in bloodstream may destroy nerve cells and lead to many behavioural disorders.

How to Protect Children from Air Pollution?

There are many ways to protect children from air pollution. It is also very important to protect the mother if the child is infant.

Some of the air pollution prevention methods are listed below:

  • Less use of vehicles. Prefer walking or cycling
  • Maximize the use of renewable energy
  • Grow plants in houses and surroundings
  • Use protection mask while stepping out of the house
  • Keep the environment neat and clean
  • Routine checkup of lactating mother and child
  • Reduce the usage of plastics
  • Stop stubble and garbage burning

It's a major cause of concern that India has recorded the highest number of child deaths due to pollution in 2016. We need to come together as a country and start following sustainable practices so as to reduce this menace of pollution and provide a healthy environment for our children.

Is There An Association Between Brain Size And Intelligence?

DM - Neurology, MD - Medicine, MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Is There An Association Between Brain Size And Intelligence?

When it comes to the brain and the IQ, is bigger the better? Does size really matter? Is there really a connection between the size of your brain and intelligence? With the help of findings by neurologists
and scientists, we seek to find out!

1. Ailments and the Brain

Scientists have found that children with autism have a brain that has grown in a disproportionate manner in the very first year of their life. This prevents the child from making connections with normal behaviour. On the other hand, children and adolescents who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD have shown signs of having a much smaller brain size. Many scientists have shown that the size of the brain shrinks as we age, and this does not have any visible effect on our cognitive abilities.

2. It's all Relative

The size of the brain does not really have a bearing on the way a person's cognition gets shaped. Even large mammals like elephants and whales are finally hunted and tamed by humans who have smaller brains in comparison. The brain is made up of billions of neurons which need to function properly. It may be seen that scientists consider the brain mass in relation with the rest of the body so as to speculate about the cognitive abilities of the person. Why is this required? Large animals need a well functioning and proportionate brain size to control and run their organs with proper cognition for satisfactory results, which is what we humans seem to have done.

3. Neanderthal Brains

Historically, the earliest man or the Neanderthals are said to have had larger brains than we do. These people are believed to have brains that are at least 10% larger than the brains that we have in our modern times. The shape of their brain was different too. They were also heavily muscled people which had a bearing on the size and shape of the brain and bodies as well as the lean tissue within the brain. They also survived very successfully for a period of over 200,000 years, which obviously points to some form of elevated cognition, as per many scientists.

4. Animals

While animals with small brains like lizards and reptiles do not perform too well on IQ tests, the animals with bigger brains like elephants and dolphins perform much better. But the medium sized brains of monkeys, lemurs and other animals are said to perform in the best manner. The correlation between the body size and the brain does not seem to hold good here, as per various researches.

So the verdict as per medical science and research stands divided!

No. Stem cell therapy is experimental and not approved. If someone offering it free as part of clinical trial or study then you can enroll and get it done. If they are charging for it then it's a marketing scam.
