Parathyroid are four small glands usually located behind the thyroid gland. They are responsible for the production of parathyroid hormone (PTH) which regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in your blood. Sometimes, tumour in parathyroid makes the gland secrete more PTH than it should and cause high calcium levels.

Symptoms: In many cases, you might not be experiencing any symptoms and a random blood test might indirectly state that you are suffering from this condition. In advance or long-standing cases you may feel bony pain, fatigability, or fractures of bone. The other symptoms can include kidney stones, excessive urination or mental irritability.

Causes and Diagnosis: There is no real evidence as to what causes Parathyroid adenoma. It is advisable to have a medical opinion if you are experiencing these above symptoms especially patients with renal stones, pathological fractures or excessive fatigability. The diagnosis can be made with high calcium, PTH & low Phosphorus levels.

Treatment: Treatment typically involves a surgical removal of the tumor. Technology has reached a stage where the doctors are able to identify the specific areas of tumor with precision and only that gland can be removed or minimal invasive surgery can be performed. It is important to consult Endocrine surgeon in your region, to get yourself evaluated to optimize your treatment.

Prevention: There is no real way by which Parathyroid adenoma can be prevented, however, it can be picked up at early stage by getting serum calcium, albumin and phosphorus test done during routine screening.
