I have depression and anxiety. Since last year thrice I had panic attacks. Several painful conditions with all tests are okay. I know it due to the mind. I take alprax sometimes. It helps but keeps me drowsy and after 24 hours. Again I feel depressed.

Depression is a real problem that needs to be addressed. We also need to clarify what you mean by panic attacks since you mention that you had them thrice last year. With the limited information provided by you it seems like you need help with treatment for depression and anxiety, and alprax is not the right medication for you. From the form you have filled out it seems like you have several problems like ?bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, hypertension, hypothroidism, indigestion/heartburn, severe hairfall, spondylitis, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, apnea, cataract and food allergies. We hope you have had these problems addressed. If yes then we need to know the medications you are on. If not we might need to run some tests and find out more and proceed further. In any case it seems like it would be hugely hugely beneficial for you to consult us online or consult a psychiatrist in-person at the earliest. Look forward to hearing from you. If you need help with booking an appointment online with me on this website either text, an appointment for a confidential and private consultation you may do so by contacting the help desk of Lybrate.

Is Your Work Making You Unhappy?

Is Your Work Making You Unhappy?

Anxiety, depression and substance use disorders are on the rise in people working in MNC's.
Few of the reasons given by my patients are:
1. Long and erratic working hours
2. Office politics
3. Competitiveness amongst colleagues &
4. The pressure to meet deadlines/ targets.

In the long run, these plus many other stresses in their personal life, add up and exceed the brain's capacity to handle pressure.
The outcome is sleep problems, excessive alcohol/smoking (to counter stress) and eventually anxiety and depression.
This is a vicious cycle- stress leads to anxiety/depression, to relieve anxiety/ stress a person consumes alcohol and smokes which in turn increases anxiety and depression.

In order to remain mentally fit, you can try to:
1. Take leave every few months and give yourself rest
2. Spend quality time with family and friends
3. Stay away from office politics if that's a trigger
4. Limit your alcohol and smoking
5. Pick up a sport/ some form of relaxation exercise
6. Develop good sleep hygiene
7. Introspect

If ever you feel that you're not able to handle the stress, talk to your family and friends. If that doesn't help then don't shy away from consulting a psychiatrist- because the earlier you start treatment the better it is.

Glad to hear your question on this open forum. We hope that you are keeping well, taking and tolerating the medications. Medications for depression do take time start working and depression usually gets better in 2-3 weeks from having started the medication. We recommend that you also consult a counselor or a psychotherapist who can help with social issues that have led to depression and treat you according to the symptoms with therapies like cbt i.e. Cognitive behavioral therapy. Exercise on a daily basis, taking meals at regular intervals and also having plenty of fluids during the day to keep you hydrated and active; are some other ways to overcome depression and anxiety and recover soon. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins b12 and d, folic acid, have also been found useful. You might want to consult us online for information regarding any other issues you may have and try to recover by using self-help techniques. Look forward to hearing from you. There is no substitute for the medications that you are taking and you can switch to a different medication under the supervision of a psychiatrist. It was certainly recommendable for you to take the medication tapered under a psychiatrist's care. However if you are able to do so we can help you with your quest, online here on this platform privately. Look forward to hearing from you. Dear Lybrate user I understand these symptoms will reoccur when you suddenly stop taking the medicines. It's better to consult psychiatrist who will help you in tapering down these medicines. It's also important to understand that you need to under go psychological counselling or therapy so better you consult a psychologist for help. Unless you bring changes in your lifestyle, thinking patterns these symptoms will reoccur. These medicines are working on biological mechanisms but it's also important and essential to heal you from psychological or mental level. All the best.
