Arthritis - Why Is Ayurveda The Best Mode Of Treatment?

If you are looking for Ayurvedic remedies for arthritis, you should opt for Ayurvedic treatment. Arthritis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease causing damage to your joints and connective tissues. The knee gets commonly affected. There are three primary types of arthritis, which occur in your knees. Ayurveda is ideal for arthritis treatment, and there are several Ayurvedic remedies that you can opt for .

Arthritis is very common but is not well understood. Actually, “arthritis” is not a single disease; it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions. People of all ages, sexes and races can and do have arthritis, and it is the leading cause of disability in America. More than 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some type of arthritis. It is most common among women and occurs more frequently as people get older.

Common arthritis joint symptoms include swellingpain, stiffness and decreased range of motion. Symptoms may come and go. They can be mild, moderate or severe. They may stay about the same for years, but may progress or get worse over time. Severe arthritis can result in chronic pain, inability to do daily activities and make it difficult to walk or climb stairs. Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes. These changes may be visible, such as knobby finger joints, but often the damage can only be seen on X-ray. Some types of arthritis also affect the heart, eyes, lungs, kidneys and skin as well as the joints.

How does ayurveda approach arthritis?

Ayurvedic treatment for arthritis is based on the understanding of the various doshas or humors of the body. According to Ayurveda, there are four main humors in the body and it is these that govern our health, wellness and our proneness to disease. Arthritis, as per Ayurveda, is a condition caused due to the aggravation of vatadosha (air). The body produces ama a toxin that is released as a by product of improper digestion. When ama is produced, it circulates in the body and gets deposited at sites that have already weakened. So when the vata is already stirring up, ama finds the perfect place to build up. That is why you experience arthritis in fingers or knees. For most people, arthritis in the knee is more painful than in the fingers because knees are load bearing joints. If you have arthritis in your knees, you will have trouble moving and the range of motion in your joints will be severely restricted. You may have to depend on people or walking aids to make even the smallest of movements.

Ayurvedic treatment for arthritis aims at balancing and stabilising the Vata component of your body. This is done by strengthening your alimentary canal and metabolic pathway. This makes sure that your circulatory channels do not get blocked by impurities, and are functioning properly. You need to drink a lot of water in order to detoxify your body. There are several Ayurvedic home remedies for arthritis treatment as well, which help in improving your motion range.

Treatment tips:

  1. You should start your day with a big glass of lukewarm water every day with Home Remedy ie. 100gm fried Methi (fenugreek) + 100gm Haldi + 10gm Piparamul Make it mixer. Take 1 Teaspoon every day morning & Evening

  2. You should opt for fenugreek which is an ideal natural inhibitor of aama and corrects your Vata dosha. This natural arthritis remedy can be taken in various ways. You can take these seeds in your food. You can also grind them, mix mustard oil to it, and apply the mixture to your joints. This provides warmth and relief to your joints.

  3. You can opt for an Ayurvedic hot oil massage of your joints. This is effective, especially during the winter. You can use ITIS OIL + castor oil + sesame seedoil for massaging your arthritis affected joints. Do not apply pressure while massaging your joints as applying pressure goes against the principles of Ayurveda.

  4. It is recommended for you to meditate regularly for relieving stress and coping with anxiety. These factors are responsible for the development of ama in your body. Regular meditation makes your body relaxed and calm. You should practice yoga as it involves several breathing exercises which help in initiating you into meditation. Having effective control over your breath, your meditation will be more effective.

  5. Take one teaspoon castor oil with one cup warm water once in a week.

  6. It is important for you to sleep early and wake up early. The disruption of your sleep cycle causes aggravation of all your doshas and causes stress and fear. A healthy sleep cycle helps you in keeping away from obesity. This improves the health of your load bearing joints, as the chances of them getting extra load because of obesity are prevented. If you are looking for Ayurvedic remedies for arthritis, it is important for you to consult an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner. He will be able to prescribe you Ayurvedic remedies which suit your symptoms and stage of arthritis.

  7. You start Unique Ayurvedic Panchkarma Treatment like abhyangam, Swedanam, Podikizi, and janu Basti along with basti treatment.

Ankylosing Spondylitis - Know The Causes Of It!

The human spine has 33 vertebrae. However, some conditions can fuse these vertebrae. Ankylosing Spondylitis is one such condition. This disease may also be known as AS or Bechterew's disease. It is an inflammatory disease that can make the spine less flexible by fusing the vertebrae of the lower back together. In some cases, it can also affect the rib cage and make it difficult to breathe. This disease typically affects more men as compared to women. Most patients begin showing symptoms in early adulthood.

Ankylosing Spondylitis affects the sacroiliac joints. These joints are located just above the tailbone. It causes inflammation of the spinal bones that in turn cause pain and stiffness. With time, this inflammation spreads to the entire spine and the vertebrae begin fusing together. This can make movement difficult and painful. In severe cases, it can also lead to the development of a hunchback. This disease also affects the other tissues of the body. For example, it can affect other joints and aggravate arthritis or affect organs such as the kidney, heart, lungs, and eyes.

A specific cause has not yet been identified for Ankylosing Spondylitis. However, studies show that genetic factors can be a trigger. In particular, the presence of the HLA-B27 gene increases a person’s risk of developing symptoms pertaining to this condition. However, it is important to note that merely the presence of this gene does not make Ankylosing Spondylitis inevitable. Other genes that are associated with this disease are ARTS1 and IL23R. These genes influence the functioning of the immune system. While it can affect people of all ages, adults are at a higher risk of suffering from this condition.

In many cases, the initial inflammation of the spine is due to a bacterial infectionof microbial infection. Though the infection itself may be treated and cured, it may cause the immune system to react and trigger inflammation. Once activated, if the immune system cannot be turned off, this inflammation will continue and can trigger Ankylosing Spondylitis. In each case, the disease presents a unique pattern of progression.

There is presently no cure for this condition, but with an early diagnosis and treatment, the symptoms can be managed and progression can be slowed. This treatment usually takes the form of medication to relieve pain, inflammation and discomfort and physical therapy. Surgery cannot be used to treat Ankylosing Spondylitis but in cases where it has caused severe joint damage, surgery may be advised to replace the damaged joint. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) - Ayurvedic Remedies At Your Rescue!

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that affects the spine. This chronic disease is caused due to inflammation of the joints in the spine and usually affects young men. It causes the vertebrae to grow or fuse together, causing a rigid spine. Actually, it affects the discs in between the vertebral column. These discs get swollen, causing a limitation of spine motility. It is an autoimmune disorder and its symptoms are lower back pain and stiffness, which usually moves to the legs.

  • The deformity due to AS can be mild or severe. In extreme cases, the patient gets a stooped spine.
  • Early diagnosis can prevent significant deformity as well as help in controlling the pain and stiffness.
  • Allopathy doesn’t really know the real reasons for this disease and here is where Ayurveda scores.
  • According to Ayurveda, AS is caused due to aggravated vata or wind, which causes an imbalance in vata dosha.

Ayurvedic treatment
Ayurvedic treatment starts with detoxification and elimination of toxins. It relies heavily on the right diet and lifestyle as well as Ayurvedic herbal preparations. The panchakarma techniques called kati vasti, sarvangadhara and patrapinda svedana are very beneficial too. The basic explanation for the disorder is that AS occurs due to an accumulation of ama or toxins in the body. Where ever ama deposits in the body, pain is caused. Ayurvedic treatments aim at digesting the ama by using herbs as medicine and balancing the aggravated vata.

  1. Herbs used in the treatment of AS are dry ginger (saunth), guggul, turmericfenugreekashwagandha and giloy. Gugul, curcumin, amlaki, haritaki, and ashwagandha are all very effective in treating AS.
  2. Avoid getting constipated and ensure proper evacuation of bowels.
  3. Include ghee in your diet for lubrication and for lowering the vata dosha.
  4. Apply heat on the affected areas to control the pain and stiffness.
  5. Eat light foods and strictly avoid oily foods and curd which increase ama.
  6. Avoid sleeping during the daytime.
  7. Yoga asanas like pawana muktasana, bhujangasana, dhanurasana, paschimottanasana and vakrasana should be practised regularly.
  8. The practice of pranayamas such as and shodhana, chandrabhedi sheethali and bhramari also helps.
  9. Chewing 2–3 raw garlic buds on an empty stomach in the morning with water helps in alleviating lumbar pain in AS.
  10. Use a powdered preparation of dried ginger root, celery seeds and cuminseeds in equal quantities with rock salt for taste, and have one teaspoon of this mixture with warm water at bedtime to reduce flatulence as well as lumbar stiffness.

Ankylosing Spondylitis - How To Handle It?

Most of the arthritic conditions don’t have any cures. Ankylosing Spondylitis is also a type of arthritis that does not have a cure. It is a kind of arthritis of the spine; it affects the vertebrae. It primarily affects the spine, but it may also affect other areas such as shoulders, hills, hips, ribs, small joints of the feet and hands etc. In very advanced stages, it may also affect eyes, lungs and heart.

However, what really makes it scary is Ankylosis. When Ankylosis takes place, there is formation of new bony structures in the spine. These structures cause some sections of the spine to fuse and make the spine immobile.

Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis

● Pain and Stiffness

One may feel a constant pain coupled with stiffness in areas like buttocks, lower back, hips etc. These symptoms may go on for months. It often starts at the sacroiliac joint.

● Bony Fusion

The formation of bony structures in the spine in advanced stages may affect movement of the back, neck, hips etc., and may also impair the ability to perform daily activities. The formation of bony structures may go to the extent of fusing the ribs in the rib cage to the breastbone or spine. This may limit the ability to expand the chest while taking deep breaths.

● Pain in Ligaments and Tendons

Ankylosing Spondylitis may also affect the tendons and ligaments that attach the muscles to the bones. This may precipitate pain and stiffness beneath or behind the heels.

Cause of Ankylosing Spondylitis

The cause of this disorder is not yet known, yet a genetic link cannot be ruled out. It has been observed that most of the people affected with Ankylosing Spondylitis carry a specific gene in them. People carrying this gene are susceptible to spondylitis. However, there are about 10% people who carry this gene, but don’t have any sign of Ankylosing Spondylitis. So, a sure determinant of cause of this disease is not completely known.

Diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis

To diagnosis Ankylosing Spondylitis, the physician has to look at several factors.

These include:

● Symptoms exhibited by the patient

● Physical Findings

● X-Rays of pelvis and back regions

● Taking chest measurements while taking deep breaths

● Laboratory tests Based upon the complete diagnosis, physician can positively determine if the condition is indeed Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Treatment

While a cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis is still not on the horizon, there are some treatments which can reduce pain and discomfort and thereby improve daily activities. Goals of treatment Since the disease can’t be cured, the goal is to reduce pain and stiffness, prevent deformity, maintain a good posture, and help perform daily activities. In fact, if treatment is proper, the patient may lead to a semblance of a normal life. However, it calls for a team approach. The team must include a physical therapist and an occupational therapist, apart from a rheumatologist. If the patient is suffering from bony growth, the doctor may go for an osteotomy.

Ankylosing Spondylitis - 4 Homeopathic Remedies For It!

The backbone (spine) has smooth movement with smooth intervertebral disks. However, this fluid movement can be limited due to arthritis, which can happen due to many reasons – genetic to age to injury to infection to tumors. The lower back has two sets of spinal disks – sacral and iliac. This sacroiliac region has an elastic vertebral tissue. This could be gradually replaced with hard bone, which can cause fusion between the disks. Such a condition is known as ankylosing spondylitis (fusing disk spaces), which is a type of arthritis.

The typical symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) are morning pain and stiffness in the low back and upper buttocks, which gradually decrease as the day goes by. The symptoms usually start and continue to gradually worsen over a period of 3 to 6 months. In severe cases, there could be spinal fractures, but in most cases, pain, stiffness and reduced movement are the main complaints.

Why homeopathy for AS (Ankylosing spondylitis)?

Major benefits of homeopathy could be summarized as under:

  1. It addresses altered immune system, treating the roots of this autoimmune disease.

  2. It helps in pain control without side effects.

  3. It aims at disease control.

  4. It is absolutely safe even if used for a long time.

Homeopathic medicines are prescribed on the basis of individual case evaluation by taking into account patient’s genetic, immunological and psychological parameters. It is safe and effective as a long-term therapy. It reduces pain, improves mobility and most importantly, controls the disease. It has no adverse effects.

Homeopathy helps AS patients by acting on the immune system, which is usually overactive in these people. Depending on the presenting symptoms, the doctor will prescribe a customized regimen for the patient.

  1. Rhus Tox: This is the first medicine of choice when the patient experiences sacral/lumbar area pain that is worse at rest, with sitting, or after a period of inactivity. The pain radiates down the legs to the foot. Walking or any other activity/motion provides relief from the pain.

  2. Aesculus: This is indicated in patients who have extremely painful and stiff low back and hips. The pain is a constant ache and there is discomfort with trying to rise from a seat, stooping, and walking, where greater effort is required. There is a feeling that the legs would give way, adding to resistance while walking.

  3. Kalmia: This is used in patients where the back pain and stiffness are accompanied by a warm, numb, and prickly sensation. Low back pain and neck pain is associated with a burning sensation. The pain appears in sudden bursts in the early parts of the night and travels down the arm or up into the scapula.

  4. Kali Carb: This is indicated where there is extreme weakness along with AS symptoms of pain and stiffness in the lumbosacral back area. The patient feels like he is going through a paralytic attack and must lie down to rest. This is a feeling similar to a broken back, and can extend up into the neck or down to the legs. The symptoms are more severe in the early morning hours. Changing positions in the bed worsens the pain.

If you or someone else is suffering from AS symptoms, give homeopathy a try.

Ankylosing Spondylitis!

Ankylosing Spondylitis Overview:
Arthritis can affect the quality of life of the affected in multifold ways. Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis can affects the spine. Pain and stiffness that runs from the neck to the lower back are the symptoms of this disease. This is an inflammation that can cause chronic pain and even lead to disability. Deformity too can be caused as the pain in the spine can lead to the formation of a new bone. It is not the only the neck and lowers back region that experiences the terrible pain, but even the other parts of the body are affected by this condition.

When affected by this condition, inflammation occurs between the vertebrae. This can also affect the joints in a few people. This can limit the movement of the affected. This disease often begins in early adolescence. When the spine becomes rigid, one can start seeing the changes. The changes can start at any point of time when the disease ranges from mild to severe. Over time, the affected also get a stooped posture. The disease is more common in Native Americans, and milder in women.

Ankylosing Spondylitis Symptoms:
1.    Pain and arduousness:
It is usual to experience the numbness, pain and stiffness in the back, buttocks and in the hips. When the symptoms exist for more than 3 months, the condition is moving from mild to severe. This usually begins in the lowest part of the spine, called the sacrum.

2.    Bony fusion: the Abnormal joining of bones is called bony fusion, and ankylosing spondylitis can lead to this overgrowth of bones. This can occur in major joints like the neck, hips, or back. The affected starts losing efficiency in performing the daily chores. In severe cases, the affected will also find it very tough to take a deep breath.

3.    Pain in tendons and sinews: The ligaments and sinews attached to the bones can be affected by ankylosing spondylitis. The inflammation of tendons called tendonitis is often on the cards. The pain and stiffness beneath the area of the heel can be experienced. This specific condition is called Achilles tendon. The back of the ankle is also affected, and the patient often finds it difficult to walk.

4.    Other symptoms: This disease is systematic, and this is why the pain and discomfort are not related to certain areas only. Affected people can experience symptoms like fatigue, fever, eye inflation, problems in heart and lungs, and loss of appetite.

5.    Weight loss, early morning stiffness, and anaemia are some of the symptoms experienced.

6.    Inflammation in the bowels and heart valve inflammation too are experienced as this is an inflammatory disease

Causes of Ankylosing Spondylitis:
The exact cause for this disease is not yet clear. Doctors point fingers at the genetic susceptibility. But, it is also be understood that not all who are affected by this disease carry the gene HLA B27. The major point is that people who carry this gene, have the higher risk of a hit by this type of arthritis. The risk percentage is higher by 10 to 20%.

What is risk factors Ankylosing Spondylitis:
If one carries the HLA B2 protein, the chances of getting affected are higher. The same is the case when one or more family members are affected by this disease. The symptoms are often seen beginning at the age of 20 to 40 years. This is also common in men, and women are rarely affected by this condition.

How to diagnosed Ankylosing Spondylitis?
1.    The diagnosis for ankylosing spondylitis is done through various ways. One of the major ways the doctor might identify the disease in the presence of the symptoms. Hence, it is important for the patients to ensure all the pain and discomfort experienced in different parts of the body should be intimated to the doctor.

2.    A physical examination is carried out by the healthcare professionals to identify the inflammation. The doctor also might ask to move and stretch the limbs, to identify the affected areas. Restricted movements often unveil the disease.

3.    X-rays are taken to notice the inflammation in the neck and the pelvic region. This screening offers a clear picture of the inflammation in various joints.

4.    The chest breathing examination is carried out to check if the condition has an impact on the lungs and causes difficulty in breathing

5.    The blood tests and other lab tests are also suggested by the doctor to check for anaemia, and other possible disorders that are associated with this condition.

6.    Urinalysis is also recommended by the doctors. This is because the inflation can also affect the function of the kidney. This can be checked at the right moment with the urine sample test done at the lab.

Treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis:
It has to be understood that ankylosing spondylitis has no cure. It can be treated to ensure that the discomfort and pain are reduced. The movement functions can be improved to ensure that the patient can do the daily chores with ease. The stiffness and pain are the major problems with the condition, and these can be eradicated to a great extent by this treatment. The goal of the treatment is also to prevent further damage and help retain a good posture. Proper treatment, methods help the affected to lead a fairly normal life, without having to depend on others. A team of doctors are involved in the treatment plan. Doctor, occupational therapist, ophthalmologist, who treats eye disease,  gastroenterologist, who treats bowel disease,  physiatrist, who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation,  and a physical therapist, who provides stretching and exercise programs are present in the team.

1.   Physical and occupational therapy: it is important to opt for these therapies at the initial stages to ensure that deformity is not formed. These therapies are given by trained professionals, who suggest a range of exercises specific to your needs and help in improving the functions,  and also keep off from forming deformities due to reduced movements. For instance, a stooped posture can be corrected or prevented with the occupational and physical therapy.

2.   Exercises: Exercises improve the daily functioning of the individuals, and help in proper posture maintenance. Apart from the exercise schedule the occupational therapist and the physical therapists suggest, the doctors can also suggest a list of exercises that can help in promoting deep breathing. When done regularly they can immensely help a lot. An exercise that is considered to be the best is swimming. For those, who cannot swim, the other options are yoga poses that help in improving the breathing pattern without any trouble.

3.   Medications: Drugs are the important part of the treatment plan for ankylosing spondylitis, for they alone offer the much demanded instant relief from pain and stiffness caused by this disease. These drugs also ensure that the patients can do the exercises to improve the condition without facing much discomfort. Else, carrying out the daily chores too can be strenuous for the patients. The anti-inflammatory drugs that do not involve the use of steroids are often prescribed for this disease. A few examples are aspirin and ibuprofen. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate (Rheumatrex)  can be used when the condition is not mild, but severe. This is because the NSAIDs are not enough to control the inflammation. Other FDA approved drugs like certolizumab pegol (Cimzia), golimumab (Simponi Aria, Simponi), infliximab (Remicade), and infliximab-day (Inflectra), a biosimilar to Remicade, and secukinumab (Cosentyx), etanercept (Enbrel), etanercept-szzs (Erelzi), a biosimilar to Enbrel, and adalimumab (Humira), adalimumab-atto (Amjevita), a biosimilar to Humira, too are prescribed currently. The chronic back pain can also be dealt with a few anti-depressants.

4.   Surgery:  When the inflammation has affected the hips and waist joints very much, a joint replacement surgery is done. This has to be decided by the doctor, and various factors can be responsible for the doctor going against the same.

Apart from the treatment options, there are certain do’s and doughnuts that are instructed by the doctors to live with this condition.

1.    Smoking exacerbates the condition. In many diseases, smoking can see to be aggravating the complications, and it is the same in the case of ankylosing spondylitis too. Smoking can impact inflammation. So, the patients are restricted from smoking.

2.    Sleeping on the firm bed is a must. Too soft mattresses can aggravate the pain. Sleeping on the back is what the patients are supposed to do. It is also advised not to use large and soft pillows. Very thin pillows or cotton bed sheets can be folded under the head. This is because the neck fusion can be triggered by using large pillows.

3.    Propping legs on pillows is another thing the patients are restricted to do. This is because, in the bent position, hip and knee fusion can result.

4.    The tables, chairs and other work surfaces should be in such a degree that the stooping posture should not be encouraged.

5.    Using armchairs is a good option, for they offer ample of support to the arms and shoulders.

6.    Jumping, falling, and dancing can cause severe damage in the severe cases of the disease. The patient should take immense care in such cases.

Prevention of Ankylosing Spondylitis:
It is not easy to prevent ankylosing spondylitis. In fact, it is near to impossible. Majorly because the cause is unknown, the prevention is also yet to be known.  However, if there are 1 or more family members diagnosed with this condition, then it is a good option to find the risk chances. Yearly health checkups can help in avoiding this condition. Leading a sedentary life too can add to the chances of getting affected by this condition. So, involving physical activities, and doing regular exercises can prevent this disease to a certain extent. Exercises can help in improving the flexibility, and in people who are very active, the symptoms are identified soon, making it easy to get treated even at the initial stages. It is also essential to stay off from smoking and tobacco. Even when not diagnosed with any form of arthritis, these substances can increase the risk factor and aggravate the condition. Eating a healthy diet is also recommended. This inflammatory disease can also lead to inflammation of the heart. So, when adding the junk and fatty foods, the heart can lose its efficiency sooner.  A healthy diet can cut out the risk by half.

Complications of Ankylosing Spondylitis:
1.    Fusion of the spine can lead to a curvature, which is called kyphosis. This can lead to a stooped posture when ankylosing spondylitis is left over time untreated.

2.    The pain is often felt in the groin area when the hi; tp and shoulder joints are affected. This is called referred pain, which can be felt in the thighs too. This can have an impact on the occupational front of the patient too.

3.    In most severe and rare cases, the heart’s electric functioning is also affected. This is because of the inflammation of the heart valves. A pacemaker must be brought in to ensure the proper functioning of the heart in such cases.

4.    In 10% of the cases, the joints near the jaws are affected. This can lead to the problem not able to open the jaw fully to eat.

5.    In the case of a few patients, the eye inflation can affect the quality of life, in case proper treatment is not given on time.

Myths:
Myth #1:
Ankylosing spondylitis affects only runs in families: only the risk factors high, and doesn’t mean it cannot occur to someone who has none in the family affected by this disease.

Myth #2:    Exercises can prevent the occurrence: While exercising can keep symptoms at bay for long, and help in easy diagnosing at early stages, it does not guarantee to stay far from this disease.

Myth #3:    Women are not affected: the risk factor for women is low. Men are affected 2 to 3 times higher but do not mean, women are spared by this disease.

It is not easy to lead a normal life with ankylosing spondylitis. It takes immense determination to fight this progressive disease. Sticking to medication and active lifestyle can only help to live with this disease.

Ankylosing Spondylitis - Symptoms, Causes, And Treatment With Homeopathy!

Ankylosis spondylitis homeopathic treatment

Living with spondylosis can be tremendously painful. Our spine is made up of a number of bones known as vertebrae. Between two consecutive vertebrae, there is a cushion like substance called intervertebral disc. Spondylosis is a common degenerative condition of the intervertebral disc due to subsequent biochemical changes in the bones and soft tissues. This affects the normal spinal structure and function of the cervical (neck), thoracic (chest area), and lumbar (low back) spine.

We're going to refer to ankylosing spondylitis as word by word just once, you'll see that ankylosing means fusion.
So it describes the spine being fused together. Spondy, this first part of the word, refers to the spine. And then -itis anywhere is inflammation. So this is an inflammation of the spine and at the sacroiliac joint, actually,
And it leads to the fusion of the area.

There are some buzzwords surrounding it. So one of them would be that it is the poster child for a group of different diseases we can read in complication of ankylosis spondolysis HLA b27 synonym term. That are referred to collectively as the seronegative spondyloarthropathies.
Spondylo-, so again, that's the spine, and then arthro, which refers to joints in general,
And then pathologies or illnesses.

So what this means is that they are rheumatoid factor negative.
They do not have rheumatoid factor but immunological reaction due to hla b27.

As biochemical changes transpire, collagen - a crucial structural elements of the intervertebral disc is affected by the loss of water content which causes the discs to weaken and shrink in height escalating the risk for disc bulging and herniation. The cartilage covering joint surface erodes causing the spine's ligaments to thicken and lose strength. In an effort to repair itself, the body forms bone spurs (osteophytes) and the joints enlarge causing osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease.

'if you wake up in the morning with a stiff back and feeling tired - indeed after moving about for some time, his back hurt less, just as his physician had said'
This is the typical picture of an ankylosing spondylitis patient - whose spine is gradually getting'rigid.

Hla b27 what does it means in ankylosis spondolysis-
It's hlab27. Again, it's part of the immune system. It's an antigen on the surface of the cell that can be recognized by t-cells, which can recruit things to attack it. So this is the autoimmune component of the disease. This hla-b27 association actually exists for the seronegative spondyloarthropathies in general, but here, in particular, for as you should remember that connection.

An abnormal result may be caused by:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Arthritis-related to Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Psoriatic arthritis (arthritis associated with psoriasis)
  • Reactive arthritis or reiters syndrome
  • Sacroiliitis (inflammation of the sacroiliac joint)
  • Uveitis

And then, just a little background information on the group of people that tend to get this. Remember, nothing is absolute, but if we're looking for patterns, it's going to be males and relatively young ones, actually, really young ones, from 15 to 45 is going to be the mean or the biggest group of people who get as or that's when it's diagnosed the most.

Complications of ankylosing spondylitis-

  • Anemia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Spinal fracture
  • Quadriplegia
  • Spondylodiscitis
  • Spontaneous subluxation of the atlantoaxial joint
  • Cauda equina syndrome
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Acute iritis/ uveitis
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Depigmentation and scarring of iris
  • Cardiomegaly
  • Pericarditis

Causes of ankylosing spondylitis -
Interesting thing about ankylosing spondylitis is that the exact cause of this condition has not been clearly understood till date though it has been the subject of numerous studies!

Ankylosing spondylitis is considered to be a genetic disorder in which the HLA-b27 gene, in particular, has an important role to play.

The risk factors that predispose a person to ankylosing spondylitis include:

Testing positive for the HLA-b27 marker:- people with this particular gene have a significantly higher risk of developing ankylosing spondylitis. However, it must be noted that not every person who has the HLA-b27 gene develops this disorder. Thus there are some additional factors, probably environmental, that are involved in the development of this condition.
A family history of ankylosis- patients with a family history of ankylosing spondylitis stand a greater chance to develop it as compared to those with no family history.
In addition, gender affinity has been strongly noticed in this condition. Males are almost 2 to 3 times more prone to develop this condition as compared to females. Ankylosis spondolysis is more common in men but occurs in women as well.
As commonly occurs in younger people, between the ages of 17-45. So restrict the life style of these people. However, it can affect children and those who are much older.
Frequent gastrointestinal infections:- the initial inflammation that activates the immune system is thought to be triggered by a bacterial or microbial infection. At a later stage, the immune system is unable to turn off this response which continues to attack the body’s own tissues now, in this case, the joints leading to arthritis. This explains the auto-immune nature of the disease.

Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis-

  • Backache and stiffness along the spine – usually worse in the mornings or after periods of inactivity
  •  The joint pain (arthritis) experienced by the patient is often relieved by motion, applying local heat or taking a warm shower
  •  Pain in the hips, buttock pain
  •  Difficulty in bending down (inflexibility)
  •  Stooping posture due to chronic back pain
  •  Neck pain
  •  Pain in heels
  •  Affection of other joints leading to pain and stiffness – e. G. Knee pain, shoulder pain, ankle pain
  •  Expansion of the chest during breathing is restricted
  •  Fatigue
  •  Loss of appetite
  •  Weight loss
  •  Inflammation of the eyes (iritis) where there is redness of eyes and pain while looking at bright lights
  •  Lungs may be affected by ankylosing spondylitis leading to breathing difficulty
  •  Pain and stiffness in the back of the heel (Achilles tendinitis)
  •  Inflammation of the tissues of the bottom of the foot causing pain (plantar fasciitis)
  •  Rarely the electrical system of the heart may be affected leading to a slow heart rate – patient experiences symptoms of dizziness, fainting, and shortness of breath in such cases
  •  The kidney may also be affected leading to accumulation of the toxins in the body that causes nausea and chronic fatigue.

Diagnosis of ankylosis spondolysis-

  1. History: Individuals typically complain of a gradual onset of low back pain and associated muscle spasms experienced over several months. The pain is usually described as worse in the morning and improving during the day. It may have followed a gradual ascending pattern from the tailbone (sacrum) to the lower back (lumbar spine) to the chest region (thoracic spine) and finally to the neck (cervical spine). Individuals may also report pain and stiffness of the rib cage and/or pain beginning in the larger peripheral joints (e. G, knees, hips, shoulders). Eye pain may be reported as well as a loss of appetite, weight loss, and fatigue. A family history of ankylosing spondylitis may also be reported on questioning.
  2. Physical exam: The exam may reveal tenderness over the area where the sacrum and hipbones meet (sacroiliac joints) and lumbar range of motion may be decreased. Chest expansion may be decreased to well below the 2 inches (5 cm). Evidence of eye inflammation (iritis) may be observed. Peripheral joints will be evaluated for tenderness, swelling, and restricted motion. Limited motion in the lumbar spine means that when the patient bends forward motion occurs by hip flexion, and very little or no lumbar spinal flexion occurs.
  3. Tests: Routine laboratory tests, including complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistries, may reveal a low-grade anemia, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) indicative of active inflammation, and an elevated serum alkaline phosphatase indicating active bone remodeling. Tissue typing (HLA typing) may be done to determine presence of HLA-b27 since as is more likely if HLA-b27 is positive. X-rays of the pelvis may show characteristic fusion or inflammation of the sacroiliac joints (sacroiliitis). Lumbar x-rays may reveal fusion of the facet joints (anterior and lateral osteophytes bridge disc spaces and fuse motion segments into a" bamboo spine"). Mri will show evidence of inflammation in the sacroiliac joints.

Homeopathic treatment-
Homeopathic treatment can contribute to an effective and safe cure in the preliminary stage of spondylosis. In chronic cases of spondylosis, homeopathy can reduce overcrowding of the spine, compression of the nerves and also conclude the progressive degenerative changes. In very advanced cases of structural damage like a badly deformed spine, homeopathic remedies along with a correct posture can facilitate in living better without any complaints or pain. We can aim for near normal in all other cases. The outcome of homeopathy in managing spondylosis will be remarkable compared to another system of medicines or surgical interventions.

Homeopathy can provide good relief to the patients and control the progress of ankylosing spondylitis. We strive to give the patients of ankylosing spondylitis a better quality of life, free from the pain of arthritis - one that can be lived to the fullest.

Homeopathic treatment is natural, safe, gentle and without side-effects. Another impressive thing about homeopathy is that people on multiple medications can safely take homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic drugs are non-habit forming and have no addictive characteristics. Homeopathy has an exceptional proven safety record with the FDA with 200 years of clinical effectiveness.

Since homeopathy treats in totality, it leads to a permanent long-lasting cure, rather than a temporary suppression of symptoms, and you will be able to enjoy all kinds of food to the fullest. So, food lovers, you won't have to think anymore before eating.

Self-care measure -

  • Exercise in an integral part of any as management program. Regular daily exercises can help create better posture and flexibility as well as help lessen pain. Most people with as feel much better with exercise.
  • Maintain good posture while sitting, standing and sleeping.
  • Hot showers will help in relieving pain.
  • Maintain a healthy weight - lose that extra weight, if any, to avoid worsening of the joint pain. Swimming, underwater exercises are good for people with ankylosing spondylitis
  • Practicing good posture techniques will also help avoid some of the complications of as including stiffness and flexion deformities of the spine. While working, sit in a chair that has an upright firm back.
  • Applying heat to stiff joints and tight muscles can help reduce pain and soreness. Applying cold to inflamed areas can help reduce swelling. Avoid violent massages.
  • Eat a varied diet including plenty of calcium-rich foods (sesame seeds, green leafy vegetables, ragi), whole grains, fruit, and vegetables. Alcoholic beverages weaken bones. Consuming more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases a person's chances of developing weakened bones. Decrease your intake of saturated fats (dairy, red meat), salt and sugar
  • Deep breathing exercises help improve as well as maintain the lung capacity.
  • Avoid sports or any activities that involve the risk of falling.
  • Sleep on a mattress that is firm (not hard). Avoid using thick pillows since they cause the neck to bend forward.
  • A hot bath or shower in the morning may help reduce pain and stiffness.
  • Stop smoking
  • Bed rest when needed
  • Do not be in one position for a long time.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and activities that aggravate pain or other symptoms.
  • Use seat belts in vehicles and keep headrests at proper heights.
  • Try to keep your weight close to ideal.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Avoid cold exposures and cold bath
  • Avoid citrus fruits since they can precipitate pain.

Hence, every individual suffering from spondylosis must consider homeopathy to provide relief and/or lifetime cure. Homeopathic treatment can change a person’s life from one of distress to one of health.

We believe in a strong patient-doctor relationship and our motto is'healthy people wealthy nation'

Ankylosing Spondylitis - How Homeopathy Can Help?

Factors That Can Cause Ankylosing Spondylitis!

In many cases, the initial inflammation of the spine is due to a bacterial infection of microbial infection.

How Ayurveda Can Help Manage Ankylosing Spondylitis?

  1. Herbs used in the treatment of AS are dry ginger (saunth), guggul, turmeric, fenugreek, ashwagandha and giloy.
  10. Use a powdered preparation of dried ginger root, celery seeds and cumin seeds in equal quantities with rock salt for taste, and have one teaspoon of this mixture with warm water at bedtime to reduce flatulence as well as lumbar stiffness.
