Ankle Sprains Health Feed

My mom is 48 years old and she is suffering from ankle swelling and pain since last two years. Her ankle got sprain nearly 10 years ago and at time she was in village so bandage was not provided and a lady cured the pain by twisting her bones. At that time she was well but now she is suffering. She is not interested in doing yoga at all. She has visited many doctors but no result is seen. Can you please tell any medicine for the same.

Has she done an x_ray of affected joint. Leg swelling generally occurs because of an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissues of the lower extremity. Common causes of leg swelling include idiopathic edema (swelling of unknown cause), overweight, is older, salt retention, cellulitis, congestive heart failure, venous insufficiency, pregnancy, and medication side effects. Some tips that may help reduce swelling: 1.Put your legs on pillows to raise them above your heart while lying down. 2.Exercise your legs. This helps pump fluid from your legs back to your heart. 3.Follow a low-salt diet, which may reduce fluid buildup and swelling. 4.Wear support stockings (sold at most drugstores and medical supply stores). 5.When traveling, take breaks often to stand up and move around. 6.Avoid wearing tight clothing or garters around your thighs. 7.Lose weight if you need to.

Rest prevents further injury and avoids stress on already inflamed tissue. Put the ankle joint at rest by wearing a brace or splint. Ice is probably the best treatment. Ice will counteract the increased blood flow to the injured area. It will reduce the swelling, redness, and warmth. Applied soon after the injury, ice will prevent much of the inflammation from happening. Compression can help keep down swelling. Compression wraps, such as ace bandages, do not provide much support to prevent movement of the ankle, and you should not apply them tightly. Elevation (keeping the injured area up as high as possible) will help the body absorb fluid that has leaked into the tissue. Ideally, prop the ankle up so that it is above the level of your heart. You can do this in a reclining chair.

Hi. Apply diclofenac ointment to the swollen ankle, clean it with warm water following hot water fermentation. This will reduce swelling and provides relief or applying icepack several times will also reduces swelling. After this make a roll of a towel or bedsheet put it under the ankle joint and firmly press and hold for 5 secs nd release. Do it for 10-15 times. Also take bowl or bucket of hot water and put feet untill ankle in it for 10-15 mins. Check for urine culture and lft test. Follow back with reports.

Common Problems Faced By Homemakers Who Stay Indoors - How Physiotherapy Can Be Of Help?

People have a common perception that most injuries, medical conditions only affect those who spend several hours working outdoors. But what if we tell you that people who stay indoors- such as homemakers - are also susceptible to numerous health problems?

There’s a saying: “Home is where the heart is.” But for countless homemakers, home is the place where ‘hurt’ is! Scores of Indian homemakers encounter various injuries every year while engaging in household chores like cleaning and washing. The most common ones are:

  1. Sprain: If you’re a neat freak, you wouldn’t mind spending half of your day cleaning the entire house. Here’s a small tip- go slow if your cleaning duties include shifting heavy appliances and furniture from one place to another. There’s a high chance that you may end up with a sprain injury. Sprains occur when you accidentally twist your ligaments. Another major cause of sprain injuries is a sudden fall. If you’re mopping the floor or cleaning the bathroom, there’s a fair chance that you may slip or lose balance. One must be cautious when working with water.
  2. Back injuries: These are the most common types of injuries at home. Bending, lifting a heavy bucket or an abrupt movement, can strain your back muscles or ligaments leading to back injury. Many times the injury can result in a persistent, sharp stabbing pain, and hinder your usual routine.
  3. Joint compression: Homemakers spend a considerable amount of time standing in the kitchen. As tiring as it is, standing for prolonged periods puts pressure on your joints- knee joint, hip joint as well as those in the feet and the ankle. This leads to wear and tear of the synovial joints, eventually causing them to tear. In due course of time, you will find it difficult to move around and walk even a meagre distance.

Prevention
Starting to get worked up? Don’t be. These problems can easily be prevented if you follow these steps-

  • Avoid overstretching, bending and twisting
  • Avoid lifting heavy weights. If possible, use a waist belt to keep away from traumatic injuries.
  • Keep your body weight in check. Mild exercises can help you with that.
  • Maintain a healthy dietcalcium intake can help your bones get stronger.
  • Use muscle braces to keep your joints protected.

Treatment
The most preferred and effective choice of treatment for curing muscle injuries and joint inflammation is physiotherapy. Physiotherapy uses manual therapy, mechanical force and exercise therapy to promote mobility.

  1. The most common method of treating such injuries is the RICE technique. ‘RICE’ stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Keep the injured part at rest. Put an ice bag on the injured portion. Compress the injured area. Elevate the wound/injury for faster relief.
  2. Anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen and Aspirin are prescribed to reduce inflammation and swelling. Painkillers can offer you instant relief from pain.
  3. Physiotherapy treatment can effectively cure you of such injuries, that too in a short span of time. If you follow the treatment guidelines, recovery will take about 2-4 weeks.

Hi lybrate-user. Its simple to reduce swollen ankles and pain at home within just a week. Apply diclofenac to the area of pain and cover it for 10-15 mins, clean it with warm water following hot water fermentation. Take a hot water tub mix salt in it and ask her to keep the foot in water. This reduces pain and swelling. Do this for twice a day. If pain is severe give zerodol p tablet once a day for three days. Follow back if any. Thank you.

I am a 28-year old woman with no known health issues. For over a week, I have had swollen ankles. They usually get worse in the evening, the swelling decreases in the morning after getting up, but never disappears. I thought it could be due to my new sedentary lifestyle under lockdown. (i have been much more inactive than usual and I put on a few pounds as well.) so I started taking walks in the evenings, but it didn't help. What could be causing this ankle swelling? I do not use any medication except for vitamin c and d supplements.

Hello lybrate-user, there are multiple causes of ankle swelling at your age. As there is no history of trauma the other causes suggest thyroid, anaemia etc should be ruled out. You don't have to worry so much but you need to get some tests done. 1. Hb cbc 2. Thyroid profile 3. Check blood pressure from local doctor 4. Renal function test 5. Liver function tests. 6. Usg (sonography) abdo and kub consult me on Lybrate after all the tests done
