Anal fissure (fissure-in-ano):

An anal fissure is a tear or open wound at the terminal part of anal lining. It is a very painful condition. Pain is felt more on passing stool and worsens if hard stool is passed.

What causes anal fissure?

  1. Acute or chronic constipation
  2. Acute or chronic diarrhoea
  3. Childbirth in females
  4. Intestinal diseases like ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s diseases
  5. Sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS, syphilis
  6. Sequel of tuberculosis, leukemia
  7. Anal intercourse

When to consult a doctor?

  1. Pain and burning sensation on passing stool
  2. Intense painful anal spasm lasting for several hours after passing stool
  3. Streaks of blood on stool or bright-red bleeding
  4. Hanging of skin outside the tear line (sentinel tag)

Treatment?

  1. Acute fissure may be cured with medicinal treatment
  2. Chronic fissure often needs surgical correction
