Does Keto Diet Work With Vegetarian Ingredients?

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Gurgaon

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. The “keto” in a ketogenic diet comes from the fact that it allows the body to produce small fuel molecules called “ketones”.
This is an alternative fuel source for the body, used when blood sugar (glucose) is in short supply.
It's a diet, which can help you burn fat more effectively.

On a ketogenic diet, your entire body switches its fuel supply to run mostly on fat, burning fat 24-7. When insulin levels become very low, fat burning can increase dramatically. It becomes easier to access your fat stores to burn them off.

This is great if you’re trying to lose weight, but there are also other less obvious benefits, such as less hunger and a steady supply of energy.

Now if we discuss what type of food should we eat when on a keto diet then there are lots of options for non vegetarians but question arises can vegetarians do keto diet?
So the answer is definitely yes. The only thing that has to be taken care of is the carbs content of diet. When following a vegan keto diet, you must significantly reduce your carb intake and replace carbs with healthy fats and vegan sources of protein.

So what can we eat in a vegan keto diet?

Do Eat

Do Not Eat

  • Grains – wheat, corn, rice, cereal, etc.
  • Legumes — lentils, black beans, peas, etc.
  • Sugar – honey, agave, maple syrup, etc.
  • Fruit – apples, bananas, oranges, etc.
  • Tubers – potato, yams, etc.

Now let's discuss what are the benefits of doing keto diet.

The main aim of the keto diet is to put, and keep, your body in a metabolic state called ketosis. Our bodies normally burn carbohydrates for energy. When you restrict the amount of carbs, the body will break down stored fat, creating molecules called ketones to use as fuel.

1. Low-Carb Diets Reduce Your Appetite.

2. Low-Carb Diets Lead to More Weight Loss at First

3. A Greater Proportion of Fat Loss Comes From Your Abdominal Cavity

4. Triglycerides Tend to Drop Drastically

5. Reduced Blood Sugar and Insulin Levels

6. Effective Against Metabolic Syndrome-
Metabolic syndrome is a condition highly associated with your risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Now there are also some side effects that can arise while following keto diet such as:

1. Keto flu- Symptoms of the keto flu can include everything from headache, weakness, and irritability, to constipationnausea, and vomiting.

2. Ketoacidosis- A serious diabetes complication where the body produces excess blood acids (ketones).

3. Weight regain- Because the keto diet is so restrictive, it’s not an appropriate diet to follow long-term. The problem is that most people will regain a lot of the weight they lost as soon as they go back on carbs.

So one should follow keto diet only under some dietician or expert to make it as useful as possible without any side effects.

Vajikarana - Treatment For Infertility And Virility!

In Ayurveda classics, dharma (duty or ethical virtues), artha (wealth or material benefits and goals), kama (desire or lust) and moksa (salvation or liberation) when compiled together form ‘purusartha catustaya,’ which means the above four factors are the main goals of human life. Following these principles of life, one can attain salvation. To achieve this purusartha catustaya, it is important for a person to remain healthy. This is the reason why in Ayurveda health is accepted as the root of dharma, artha, kdma and moksa. Therefore, the first emphasis in Ayurveda is always on health protection.

Among the three goals, dharma, artha and kdma, the importance of kama (lust or desire) is above all. This world is said to be ‘agnisomatmaka,’ where ‘agni’ means ‘a female’ and ‘soma’ means ‘a male,’ and this whole world has originated from the union or fusion of both male (somd) and female (agni) energies, and an unabated tradition of life is based on this philosophy. This is the reason why some learned sages have accepted the importance of lust and described virilization or the science of aphrodisiacs as an independent branch among the eight branches of Ayurveda.

The following purposes of virilization are described in the classical texts by the learned

stages:

  • Conception of the best progeny.
  • To enhance sexual vigor and support sexual vitality.
  • To eradicate disorders of semen, and for better strength, energy and improved complexion.
  • For the purpose of duty as it enhances the capacity to work due to the satisfaction of sexual desire, affection and attachment, and enhances pleasure and energy in the body.
  • To sustain long-term youth as one remains free from mental anxiety, distress and tribulation.
  • The treatment of semen and diseases associated with the male genital organs.
  • At present, due to revolutionary changes in lifestyle, dietary habits and transformed life parameters, various complications related to intercourse and conception are commonly diagnosed in day to day life. In these hard times, this specific Ayurvedic treatment system can prove very useful. The need of the day is to rehabilitate virilization therapy based on modern scientific parameters.

   Definitions
Virilization includes the medicines, diet and lifestyle which enhance sexual vigor (like the horse), so that a person can undergo sexual indulgence repeatedly and satisfactorily or strengthen the frequency of intercourse.
In Ayurveda, ‘vaji’ means ‘horse,’ the symbol of sexual potency and performance. ‘Vaji’ also means ‘strength.’ Those methods and therapies which enhance the strength and nourish the semen, increase sexual ability and procreation power is ‘vajikarna.’

Lifestyle, diet and medicines including aphrodisiacs used in a proper way so as to enhance the energy, sexual vigor, complexion, ojas and strong reproductive power that facilitates the origin of better quality, fit, healthy, intelligent and brilliant progeny is known as virilization. Virilization and the use of aphrodisiacs is mainly prescribed for males.

Aphrodisiac substances: Aphrodisiacs include medicines, diet and lifestyle. Aphrodisiac substances are divided into three types on the basis of their use.

Sukrajanana (spermopoietic): These substances enhance the normal origin of sperm, but do not affect the discharge of semen.
1 Spermopoietic diet: This diet calls for the addition of clarified butter (ghee), milk, almond and other substances.
2 Spermopoietic lifestyle: One should engage in cheerfulness and good sleep.
3 Spermopoietic medicines: These include asparagus (satavari), musali, country mallow (bala), Astavarga medicines (vitality promoting medicines) and so on.

Sukrapravartana (Discharge of semen): These substances affect the discharge of semen but produce no effect on sperm generation. They only provoke seminal discharge resulting in excitation for coitus. Generally these substance have specific properties such that they are quickly absorbable or diffusible, produces looseness in the joints, hot in potency, penetrating and increases mobility. Do not use them for a longer duration.

1. Sukrapravartana diet: Black gram and so on.
2. Sukrapravartana lifestyle: The touch and memory of a female, to watch seductive movies and photographs for excitement.
3. Sukrapravartana medicines: Herbs which promote discharge of semen like pellitory (akarakara), cowhage (kaunca), alcohol and so on.

Types of Aphrodisiac Substances

Sukrajanana pravartana (that facilitates both spermopoiesis and discharge): These substances facilitate both spermopoiesis as well as discharge of semen; means it also contains property of excitation. These substances are mostly hot in potency, light, minute, viscous, slack, quickly absorbable or diffusible and having mobility.

1. Sukrajanana pravartaka diet: Milk processed with medicated herbs like wintercherry (asvagandha), ksirapaka, rice and rice pudding cooked with aromatic substances.
2. Sukrajanana pravartana lifestyle: That which promotes spermopoiesis and discharge like walks in the moonlight, near river banks and beautiful flower valleys or other such romantic places or listening to melodious music.
3. Sukrajanana pravartana medicines: Medicines which promotes spermatopoiesis and discharge like musk (kasturi), Indian hemp (bhanga), snakewood (kucala), wild orchid (salamamisri), Himalayan marsh orchid (salamapanja) and so on.

 Incompatibility for virilization
Incompatible for virilization as per the age: According to Acarya Caraka, aphrodisiacs should not be used without any specific disease and before marriage. The age of virilization is after 16 years and up to 70 years. It should not be used in childhood and youth. Sexual indulgence at a young age causes emaciation of the body just as a pond containing less water dries up quickly.
Incompatible for virilization according to marital status: Coitus among married couples is also permitted within limits in a balanced manner. Our societal norms does not permit coitus for an unmarried male. Therefore, according to Ayurveda they are not suitable for the use of aphrodisiacs.
Incompatible for virilization as per the principles of balance and harmony: A person lacking physical and mental coordination, an unsteady brain and mind, over indulgence in sexual thoughts, with strong lust for sex and addicted people should not undergo virilization therapy.
Incompatible for virilization as per the ailments: A person suffering from venereal diseases such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, AIDS and so on should not indulge in sex. Therefore, they must not use aphrodisiacs until completely cured, because these diseases are contagious and can be transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact.

3 Benefits Of Massage Therapy!

Massage therapy is not meant only for athletes and people recovering from injuries. Massage therapy is often used to ease pain and soothe knotted muscles. Getting a massage not only benefits you physically, but also eases stress and benefits your mental health. Apart from these, getting a massage also has a few long term benefits that may surprise you. Let’s have a look at three such surprise benefits of booking an appointment with the masseuse.

  1. It makes your skin glow: If you’ve ever had a facial in a spa or beauty parlour, you know it would be incomplete without a massage. Getting a massage improves blood circulation. It encourages the lymphatic system to rid the skin of toxins and rejuvenates skin cells while also carrying away metabolic waste from the muscles and other internal organs. Thus good blood circulation ensures that your skin is healthy and has a fresh glow. Getting a massage can also help keep your skin looking younger and slow down the aging process. Lastly, a massage is also said to be able to reduce stretch marks and scar tissue. Using the right oil can further help make your kin glow. Some oils worth trying are almond oil, apricot oil, olive oil and lavender oil.
  2. It boosts immunity: A massage can also strengthen your immune system and protect you against infections and diseases. A 45 minute massage can increase your lymphocyte count. Lymphocytes are essentially white blood cells that help the body fight infections. A massage can also reduce the number of cytokines present in the body. a lowered cytokine level reduces your risk of suffering from conditions such as asthma and cardio vascular diseases. Additionally, a massage also lowers the cortisol or stress hormone levels and vasopressin levels.
  3. It improves the quality of your sleep: The quality of your sleep plays a vital role in your overall health. Getting a massage can reduce fatigue and help people of all ages get a better sleep. Studies show that massages increase the delta waves which are connected to falling into a deep sleep. This explains why many people fall asleep on the massage table itself. A massage also helps manage anxiety and calms the mind making it easier for people to fall asleep at the end of the day.

To experience all the benefits of massage therapy, make visiting the masseuse a regular affair. This is one form of pampering that is well worth the time and expense.

7 Most Effective Ayurvedic Treatments For Infertility!

Ayurveda is a time tested warehouse of medical wisdom and does offer treatment options for this problem too!

Causes Of Infertility According To Ayurveda:

Infertility is often spoken about in whispers. There is still a lot of stigma attached to this increasingly common medical issue. Yes, infertility is medical problem and needs medical intervention.

According to Ayurveda, infertility occurs when a person’s reproductive tissue or Shukra dhatu, remains bereft of nutrition. This can be caused due to poor digestion and because of certain toxins in the body. Some of the other causes of infertility according to Ayurveda are:

  1. Anxiety
  2. Depression
  3. Insomnia
  4. Spicy and Salty food

Ayurvedic Treatment For Infertility:
Ayurveda takes a holistic view about health and treats the body as a whole instead of an individual ailment. Once you visit a good Ayurvedic doctor, he’ll ask you many questions before diagnosing you. Once the doctor is certain of what ails your body, he’ll be ready to treat you!

The main focus of Ayurvedic treatment for infertility is to ensure the proper transformation of food into nutrients that can move to the ‘shukra dhatu’. Some of the used treatment for infertility in Ayurveda are:

1. Swedanam: Ayurvedic doctors use this method to induce sweating in patients suffering from infertility with the help of heavy blankets or exercises. This is done to flush toxins out of the body.

2. Vamanam: This somewhat uncomfortable but ultimately detoxing Ayurvedic therapy induces vomiting to rid the body of undigested food.

3. Banyan Tree Bark: Many Ayurvedic doctors prescribe the use of dried banyan tree bark powder, mixed with sugar, to treat infertility issues.

4. Ashwagandha Churna And Kapikacchu: Both these medicines are known to increase sperm count and also improve its quality.

5. Phala Gritam: This is an Ayurvedic medicine to treat female infertility. Consumed in the form of liquefied butter mixed with milk, this medicine is touted to treat functional problems but does not treat structural deficiencies.

6. Guduchi, Gokshura, And Triphala Churna: These medicines are used to clear the blockages in the body, which prevents the production of the shukra dhatu.

7. ShatavariThis is only woman medicine, used female infertility treatment in Ayurveda.

Diet To Tackle Infertility:
According to Ayurveda, a person dealing with infertility needs to follow a strict diet. Apart from avoiding spicy and excessively salty food, Ayurveda recommends including the following foods in the patients diet:

  1. Almonds
  2. Fresh Vegetables
  3. Whole Grains
  4. Dairy products such as milk
  5. Fresh Fruits
  6. Dried Fruits

All these foods help provide nutrition to the shukra dhatu, which in turn can help a person conceive.

Points To Remember:
It is tough to deal with infertility issues and at time, you may feel helpless, but Ayurveda does offer of ray of hope. Here are some tips to get you going:

Accept:
No matter the form of treatment you seek, the first thing you need to do is accept that you have a problem. Living in denial will not help you get pregnant.

Seek Help:
If you have been trying to conceive for more than a year now, seek medical help.

Don’t Blame Yourself:
Infertility is common, effecting one in 10 couples.

Speak Out:
Don’t keep it to yourself. Infertility is not a curse. Talk to your friends so they can offer emotional help.

Mental Disorders At Elderly Age - How To Stop It?

Older people are at a higher risk of developing mental disorders as with age the neurology of the brain tends to deteriorate. Various physical illnesses such as chronic pain and bone disorders which are common in older people can restrict their ability to live an independent life. Most of the diseases that affects older people tend to require long term care.

Other causes of mental disorders are events like death of near ones, disabilities or a reduction in socioeconomic status. These factors can make them isolated and lonely leading to psychological problems in the elderly. Physical diseases such as heart problems may also lead to mental problems.
With respect to the above points, you may follow these pointers to stay away from mental disorders -

1. Physical exercise
It is very important to stay active as it has multiple health benefits. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in the body. In case of movement restrictions, focus on doing simple activities like walking and moving about as replacement for regular exercise.

2. Food
Food is important to mental health as they provide the necessary nutrients to the body. Add almonds to your diet as they contain vitamin B6 which is very good for the brain. Omega 3 and Omega 6 acids in almonds also contribute to brain health. Eat a diet that is low in fat, focus on simple and natural foods.

3. Communicate
Take up a hobby or participate in social gatherings to get more involved with people. These activities will keep your mind occupied and stimulate your brain. It will reduce the risks of depression and related disorders.

4. Remove negative emotions
Try to avoid negative emotions as they are the major source of depression. Take up meditation as their effect on improving mental health is well known. Focus on the positives in every experience to be content and happy. Negative emotions can lead to serious mental problems such as depression and anxiety disorders.

PCOS - Dietary Tips To Avoid Weight Gain In This Disorder!

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. Polycystic means “many cysts,” and PCOS often causes clusters of small, pearl-sized cysts in the ovaries. The cysts are fluid-filled and contain immature eggs. PCOS affects one in 4 women.

What are the causes behind it?
While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, doctors believe that hormonal imbalances and genetics play a role. Women are more likely to develop PCOS if their mother or sister also has the condition.
Overproduction of the hormone androgen may be another contributing factor. Androgen is a male sex hormone that women’s bodies also produce.

PCOS Symptoms
PCOS is a syndrome disease defined by a collection of signs and symptoms. The symptoms of PCOS that one patient experiences can be very different from the symptoms of another patient. If you have two or more of the following symptoms, you need to have a thorough checkup to determine if you need PCOS treatment:

  • Irregular or missing menstrual periods
  • Infertility
  • Excess or unwanted body or facial hair growth
  • Thinning hair on the scalp
  • Weight problems, often including weight gain around the waist
  • Skin problems, including skin tags, darkening skin and acne

Does PCOS increase weight?
The answer is a ‘YES’. Most PCOS patients are overweight and are asked to exercise which helps control the symptoms but a lot many people have a completely normal body type.

What are the risks associated with PCOS-related weight gain?
No matter what the cause, weight gain can be detrimental to your health. Women with PCOS are more likely to develop many of the problems associated with weight gain and insulin resistance, including:

Many of these conditions can lead to heart disease. In fact, women with PCOS are four to seven times more likely to have a heart attack than women of the same age without the condition.

Benefit of Weight Loss with PCOS

Modest weight loss will not cure PCOS, but it will help. Weight loss can restore the normal function of the ovaries and result in normal hormone production. This may, in turn, lead to improvements in symptoms of PCOS, such as excess hair growth, acne or scalp hair loss.

Protect Yourself From Weight Gain

  • Eat Right: A healthy diet low in complex carbohydrates, moderate protein and low fat is important, as this can help regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Exercise: Start doing low-to-moderate activities like walking or swimming for 30-to-90 minutes per day because exercise (even without weight loss) has been shown to lower or get rid of insulin resistance.
  • Lose Weight: The more overweight you are the more likely you are to be insulin resistant whether you have PCOS or not. Losing just 5% of your bodyweight will help lower your insulin resistance.
  • Avoid Stress: Don’t over stress yourself as it increases the blood pressure level in your body and can’t help to resist with PCOS. So, try to stay as calm as possible.
  • Get more sleep (at least 7-to-9 hours in a day): Not getting enough sleep can also make your insulin resistance worse, which in turn acquires you the weight.

DIET:

Foods you should avoid while suffering from PCOS:

  • Sweetened juice, canned fruit in heavy syrup, or sweetened applesauce
  • Starchy vegetables including potatoes, corn, and peas
  • Refined grains made with white flour such as white bread and pasta, bagels, or white rice
  • Sweetened grains and donuts
  • Sugary drinks such as soda or juice
  • Sugary foods such as cookies, cakes, and candy
  • Snacks such as potato chips and tortilla chips

Foods To Eat And Avoid When You Have Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level rises in your body either due to less insulin level in the body or reduced sensitivity of the body to insulin. The foods you eat have a major role in controlling your blood sugar levels. You need to pick your foods wisely to prevent your blood sugar levels from spiking.

The various foods that you should be eating if you have diabetes are :

1. Dark chocolate: Chocolate contains good amounts of flavonoids that help in improving insulin sensitivity and limits food cravings. It also reduces your chances of heart attack.
2. Blueberries: Blueberries are rich in fiber that helps you in managing your blood sugar levels. They also contain anthocyanins that assist in regulating your blood sugar levels.
3. Fish: Fish is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation in the body, thus reducing your chances of heart problems. Fish is also a good source of protein that helps you in feeling fuller.
4. Olive oil: Olive oil is rich in antioxidants that help in reducing your chances of heart diseases and diabetes.
5. Oranges: Make sure you eat plenty of oranges as they are rich in vitamin C and they reduce the risk of diabetes. You may also opt for broccoli or strawberries.

The various foods you should avoid are :

1. White rice: White rice is a refined grain which, when consumed, tends to spike your blood sugar levels. You can instead opt for brown rice.
2. Bananas: Banana may contain vitamins and minerals, but are also rich in carbohydrates. Instead, opt for fruits like berries that are not only rich in fiber and antioxidants, but also have a low glycemic index.
3. Sugary foods: The term sugary foods is used to describe foods such as pastries, cakes and cookies. These foods are carbohydrate rich and do not contribute much in making the body healthy. Instead, replace them with natural foods such as chickpeas and peanuts.
4. Dried fruit: Various dried fruits contain high concentration of sugar, which happens due to the dehydration process by which they are formed. So replace them with fresh fruits such as guava and peaches to control your blood sugar levels.

Amongst all other dry-fruits, Almonds and Walnuts can be had in moderation as they contain essential fatty acids and do not effect blood sugars.
