Acl tears might be complete or partial. For complete acl tears, surgery is usually required. Partial acl tears, however, may be treated through non-surgical methods.

Majority of people recover from acl tears within 6 to 9 months. Acl tears generally occur to people who play sports like football, volleyball, basketball, etc, and also to people who are aggressively engaged in physical activity. Most athletes require surgery as it is important for them to get back to normal position as they will again require sharp movements while playing sports.

Regards Lybrate user. Acl tears are common in sports injuries and may also occur with falls or accidents. Acl is a strong ligament which is very essential for a stable knee joint. Recovery after acl repair is also structured and physiotherapy protocols will help you recover quicker. Average time frame of 6-12 weeks is ideal for full recove...more

Ice therapy would definitely help to reduce the inflammation. We also advise you to use knee cap which would help to prevent the knee from damaging further and also to maintain the quadriceps muscle tone. Stiffness have developed due to weakness of the ligaments &inflammed cartilage. Specific knee exercises will also help ie. Keeping ball underneath the knee and keep pressing it. That's the simple exercise which will help you to strengthen the knee.
