I would advise you to visit a surgeon. If there is an abscess it will require drainage. The pus should be sent for culture. Depending on the culture, antibiotics may have to be changed.

Dear lybrate user, tooth abscess is usually accompanied with swelling, sensitivity to hot and cold and throbbing pain in the tooth or foul smell and salty taste in the mouth. The cause of abscess is tooth decay so the tooth involved is never healthy, it is decayed. The abscess needs to be drained and proper root canal treatment is required to prevent the infection from spreading to the jaw.

The main distinguishing feature compared to a perianal fistula is that a pilonidal sinus does not communicate with the anal canal; if there is any uncertainty on initial inspection, a rigid sigmoidoscopy or mri imaging can be performed to assess for any internal opening of a tract.

Ninety percent of abscesses are the result of an acute infection in the internal glands of the anus. Occasionally, bacteria, fecal material or foreign matter can clog an anal gland and tunnel into the tissue around the anus or rectum, where it may then collect in a cavity called an abscess.
