Dear lybrate-user, You are suffering too long with depression. Don't lose hopes. 20% of depressions are treatment resistant. For those like you, psychiatrists have many treatment options. You can take a course of 6 - 9 ECTs (electroconvulsive therapy) or rTMS sessions, or CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy), or you can add samE, Vitamin D3 (if it is low), thyroxine, 5HT, fish oil, etc. Your psychiatrist will be able to prescribe them for you. Please remember that these treatments are in addition to your censpram, tayo and felicita. That too in maximum dose. So far you have not gone to coma. With all your difficulties, you have looked after and brought your son up to 8 years. Please ask your doctor for add ons.

Hello lybrate user, back pain that is associated with day time sedentary jobs like computer professional s are associated with paraspinal muscle spasms. The best way to tackle this sort of pain is to do well spaced stretching exercises of the back, back extension exercises, using hot water bags to provide relief and avoiding stooping posture while sitting. Posture also plays a very important part in back pain, always maintain a straight posture while sitting. While getting up from the bed try to first go on your left or right side of the body and get up side ways. Avoid cruntches or sit-ups: they may increase the pressure on your back and may predispose to slip disc. Always maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of regular brisk walking, meditation, eating healthy. P. S: try to avoid pain killers (analgesics) as much as possible as many are associated with side effects that you may not be aware of. Stay healthy. Stay happy.

PAIN Caused Due to Sports Injuries - How Should You Approach?

PAIN Caused Due to Sports Injuries - How Should You Approach?

How should you approach pain caused due to sports injuries??

Sports injuries can happen to any person who engages in sporting activities. These affect full-time athletes as well as those who partake in sports and exercising on an occasional basis. Most sports injuries are acute and affect the muscles and skeletal system. Usually, they are not chronic unless caused by a grave accident or left untreated.

The most common types of injuries caused due to sports are as follows:

Treatment of sports injuries depends on a number of factors such as the type of injury, part of the body affected, the intensity of the pain, and the patient's age and medical history.

Accordingly, the most common ways of approaching the pain caused by sports injuries are:

  1. Immediate remedies: Several quick aid, home remedies are used to treat pain that is caused by minor injuries to muscles, such as sprains and strains. It involves alleviation of pain through rest, using ice packs and hot water bags, wearing supports and elastic compression bandages.
  2. Medication: Many medicines such as painkillers and anti-inflammatory pills, creams and sprays effectively reduce pain caused by sports injuries. In extreme cases, morphine and codeine are also prescribed.
  3. Physical therapy: A number of injuries can be treated and cured through certain exercise and workout routines. These aim at stretching and strengthening the affected area to provide pain relief through increased flexibility and muscle activity.
  4. Injections: Various substances and chemical compounds can be injected into the injured area which works on the affected ligaments, tendons, and cartilage to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
  5. Surgical procedures: This is generally resorted to in case of damage to the skeleton in the form of broken bones and cracked ribs.
  6. Interventional Pain relieving procedures: These include regenerative or stem cell therapy, and neuromodulation techniques using radio frequency current. They may result in best results without any tissue cutting or damage. A pain specialist may be able to help you best in that case.

Devising the exact treatment method requires a thorough examination of the injury. Diagnosis can only be provided after taking into consideration the many factors that affect treatment. The method of treatment varies from case to case and consequently, the recovery time also differs. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pain management specialist.

Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Joint pains and swelling persist for about 1-2 years post viral infections like chikunguniya. There is no specific medicine for it. So rely more on exercises to prevent joint stiffness. Good news is it is self-remitting and will cure itself.

Hello, my mom is suffering from frozen shoulder very much. What to do now to reduce pain and stiffness? She can't lift up right hand and very much pain in the shoulder. So What to do now to reduce the pain and stiffness?

Please ask your mom to continue to use the involved shoulder and extremity as much as possible given her pain and range-of-motion limits. Applying heat or cold to her shoulder can help relieve pain. A physiotherapist can teach her range-of-motion exercises to help recover as much mobility in the shoulder as possible. Her commitment to doing these exercises is important to optimize recovery of her mobility. Most frozen shoulders get better on their own within 12 to 18 months. For persistent symptoms, go to a orthopedic doctor who may suggest: steroid injections or shoulder manipulation or surgery. Best wishes.

Vertigo is very common these days in any age group due to excess of noise exposure and damage to inner ear, humming sound, whistling and giddiness are the problems which are getting in people are very common these days, these get complicated when they are not taken care of at proper time whistling or buzzing in the ear is getting commoner these days in people of all ages. Most common causes is wax or any object in the ear, after getting your ears clean these gets over. But if ears are already clean than this is worrisome. Common causes which are responsible are high cholesterol diet, alcohol, smoking, loud noises, cervical spondylosis, trauma (self or inflicted) over the ears. If this is the situation than report to your ent doctor immediately tinnitus is basically due to hampered blood supply to ears due to which ears start dying. As this process starts a person starts hearing noises. When a person starts hearing noises then it is already late diagnosis as these noises gets heard by someone when they are of 40 db intensity, below that threshold these noises are not heard. So it is already to late and the damage has become permanent. Problem with these noises are that we can control at what level person goes to his specialist otherwise these noises keep on increasing and can give you headache frustration and depression.
