Tips For Knee Replacement Recovery!

Tips For Knee Replacement Recovery!

Knee replacement surgery is a procedure that is used to replace a worn out knee joint with an artificial knee joint. Such a surgery is advised if your knee is causing pain and limiting your daily activities, provided other treatments have failed to cause the desired impact. (Learn more to maintain bone and joint health)

Once the knee replacement surgery is completed, the focus shifts to the recovery phase.

  1. The duration of the recovery depends on the type of surgery and the individual.

  2. After the surgery, painkillers are administered to provide relief from the pain.

  3. In some cases, oxygen is administered through various tubes if required.

  4. A blood transfusion may also be required after a knee replacement surgery.

  5. The surgical wound will require a dressing to allow it to heal faster and prevent infection.

  6. A drain will be attached to the wound to drain out the blood from it and prevent accumulation of blood in the wound.

  7. The dressing of the wound should be changed regularly.

Post- Surgery Care

  • Post-surgery, you will need assistance to help you walk. If the surgery that you underwent was minimally invasive, then you should be able to walk on the very same day. Your physiotherapist will prescribe and show you some exercises to strengthen the knee. It is important that you follow his/her instructions to avoid complications.

  • A passive motion machine is sometimes prescribed as it helps to restore the movement of the knee. It helps in reducing the swelling by keeping your leg elevated and moving the knee when you are lying down.

Here are some knee replacement recovery tips:

  1. Avoid doing any work that puts pressure on the knees.

  2. Eat nutritious meals so that the body receives proper nourishment, thus allowing your leg to heal faster.

  3. Avoid heavy exercises which can strain your knees.

  4. Perform all the exercises prescribed by your physiotherapist to speed up the recovery process.

  5. Do not sit with your legs crossed for a few months after the surgery.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an orthopedist.

Hi lybrate-user! thanks for seeking help from us please show an orthopedics doctor who may assess the ankle joint for any minimal sprain, its best generally to use elastic support or anklet, do hot fermentation and take a short course of anti inflammatory drugs, avoid sport for 7 days or walking without ankle protection. Rest promotes healing and for partial strains of ligaments around ankle, an elastic protective support for some immobilization is very necessary to avoid a lingering pain afterwards. So see a doctor soon thanks

Best Physiotherapy Exercises for In-Coordination--Frenkel s Exercises

Best Physiotherapy Exercises for In-coordination--Frenkel’s Exercises

Frenkel’s exercises are a very effective means of improving the coordination. In fact it is very beneficial for patient with sensory ataxia. This technique established control of movement by use of alternate sensory mechanism, which is intact, usually visual, sound and touch.

The main principles of Frenkel’s exercises are as follows:

·        Concentration or attention

·        Precision

·        Repetition

The patient is positioned in such a manner that he can see the movement. The therapist gives a concise explanation and even demonstrates the exercises  so that the patient obtains a good mental picture of what he is expected to do.The patient should concentrate to perform a smooth and accurate movement. The speed of the movement is regulated by the therapist through the use of rhythmic counting, movement of her hand or the use of suitable music.

The range of the movement is indicated by marking the spot on which the foot or hand is to be placed. The exercises are repeated many times until the patient perfect it and is able to perform it with ease. The exercises are made more difficult by incorporating more movements and more joints into the exercise.

Slower movements need more control than rapid movements hence alteration in the speed of consecutive movements is very essential to offer challenge to the patient.

In sitting position one can even use technique of joint approximation or rhythmic stabilization in order to bring about contraction of the neck muscle that in turn can stabilize the neck.

Biofeedback can also be tried out to facilitate contraction of postural muscles of the neck and trunk. Good trunk control can be achieved by giving activities like prone on elbow, prone on hand, on all fours, bridging, trunk rotations etc. putting the patient prone on vestibular ball also helps in developing control of the trunk extensors. side sitting by taking weight already on both the hands also stimulates trunk stabilization.

I am 37 years old man, 3 weeks back I slip down from 2mtrs height, while fell down supported with two hands and leg knee. Now right leg knee and right hand joint have pain, can't move normally and bend it some times. If any deviation of movements have pain. But not always. No swelling.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).
