Alcohol - How It Can Induce Sleep Disorders?

Sleep disorders are often associated with substance abuse. The problems in sleep arise as a result of direct effects of a particular substance. Substance induced sleep disorders can be caused by many drugs, regardless of whether or not the substance is medically prescribed, legal or socially acceptable. It can also be caused due to alcohol abuse.

If you experience problems in sleep on not having resorted to any substance or even if you are trying to quit, it is called ‘withdrawal’. The severity of the sleep disorder depends on the type of substance used, and not much on whether or not the drug is illegal. A number of prescription as well as non-prescription drugs are capable of causing sleep disorders. However, the severity of the sleep disorders tends to vary among individuals.

Problems in sleep that can be caused due to prescription drugs such as:

  1. Hormonal drugs e.g. oral contraceptives
  2. Drugs for high blood pressure e.g. beta blockers
  3. Inhalable respiratory drugs
  4. Steroids, such as prednisone
  5. Medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  6. Diet pills
  7. Seizure medications
  8. Some antidepressants

Non-prescription drugs that can cause problems in sleep:

  1. Medications along with caffeine: These may include many cold and cough medications.
  2. Pseudoephedrine
  3. Illegal drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines as well as methamphetamines.
  4. Nicotine is capable of disrupting sleep and reducing the total sleep time.

Alcohol is often regarded to be a calming drug or a sedative. While alcohol is capable of inducing sleep, the quality of sleep tends to be fragmented during the second half of the sleeping period. Consumption of alcohol usually tends to increase the number of times you wake during the latter part of the sleep. This is because the relaxing effect of alcohol wears off eventually. Alcohol tends to keep you in the lighter sleep stages more and thus, is at fault of not inducing the much required deep sleep.

If you consume alcohol just before you go to bed, the sleep inducing capacity might decrease as the effects that are disruptive continue to increase. The alcohol induced sleep disorders may lead to sleepiness and fatigue during the daytime. With age, these problems tend to grow in severity. Consumption of alcohol before bedtime, among the elderly, might lead to unsteadiness while walking with a higher risk of injuries and falls. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist.

One should take seasonal and locally grown natural food and vegetables grown out of organic farms. Eat less, dinner lighter then lunch, eat natural and in moderation – are few of the mantras.

Eating food supplements may be harmful. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), supplementation with beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E, either alone or in combination with each other or other antioxidant vitamins does not prevent heart disease.

High dose vitamin E supplementation (400 IU/day) may be associated with an increase in all–cause mortality.

Supplementation with vitamin C does not prevent a second heart attack.

Beta carotene supplementation may be dangerous and should be discouraged.

Vitamin E supplementation may be of benefit for only secondary prevention in heart patients with chronic renal failure who are undergoing hemodialysis.

The AHA concluded that current data do not justify the use of antioxidant supplements for the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular disease risk.

The above recommendations apply to supplementation only. Diets that are rich in natural antioxidants are associated with lower cardiovascular mortality.( Heart Diseases ). Any doubts you can ask me

Sabse pehle aap sote time apna head south direction me rakh k soye, secondly take 15 leaves of shyam tulsi and add 5 gram ginger and one leaf of bitter neem now make a paste of it and boil in 80 ml water and refined it and drink twice a day although your problem will be cured in 2 days but you have to drink this herbal tea for 2 months regularly without fail. At night before sleeping take warm cow ghee and put 2 drops cow ghee in your nose (both nostrils), do this regular for 3 months without fail. Cow ghee calm downs the nervous system and reaches even those part of your brain where allopathty and homeopathy fails to reach. And it has scientifically proven that it has no side effect, but make sure cow ghee is pure. Tulsi kaadha peene k 45 min bad amla juice regular peena start kare water dilute karke, it will improve her hemoglobin. Walk minimum 30 minutes in morning or evening regularly.

1. Start your stop smoking plan with ‘ S T A R T’ S- Set a date for quitting smoking. Choose a date within next two weeks, so that you have enough Time to prepare without losing your motivation to quit T- Tell your family, friends and co workers that you want to quit so that they can give support and encouragement A-Anticipate and plan for the challenge you will face while quitting like crave for cigarettes and Nicotine withdrawal symptoms R- Remove Cigarettes, lighter, Ash tray,, matches etc from home, car or work place T- Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit and to deal with Nicotine withdrawal symptoms 2.Distract yourself to keep your mind off smoking like concentrate on some work, watching TV, playing games, reading books/magazines, listen to music, cross word puzzle or playing online games etc 3. Remind yourself why you want to quit. Focus on your reasons for quitting like health benefits, improved appearance, financial effect and enhancement of self esteem 4. Get out of tempting situations like someone smoking close by 5. Reward yourself- reinforce your victories whenever you triumph over a craving. Give yourself a reward to keep yourself motivated 6. Find an oral substitute like Mint, Nicotine Lozenges, Nicotine patch, chewing gums etc 7. Keep your hands busy like squeezing balls, handling pencils, paper clips to satisfy the need for tactile stimulation 8. Brush your teeth-The just brushed clean feeling can motivate you to get rid of craving 9. Slowly drink a large cold glass of water to help the craving pass and keep you hydrated. It also minimizes the symptoms of Nicotine withdrawal 10. Go for regular Exercise, play some games 11. Take tablet Pan-D before breakfast on empty stomach for three months and always to take a gap of a week before starting it again only if necessary and Avoid spicy food items and not to eat junk food and we also need to avoid peanuts and potatoes in our daily diet.

Whenever you peruse through snack options in a store, looking for a fulfilling yet healthy option often turns out to be really challenging. This is where you might consider nuts, such as almonds or walnuts. They are healthy snacking options with rich reserves of protein, fibre, and energy.

However, even in the choice between almonds and walnuts, there are certain things which need to be kept in mind.

  • Energy content: Almonds contain 14 grams worth of fat, and 164 calories whereas walnuts contain approximately 18 grams of fat but give 185 calories. Thus, we find that walnuts contain a slightly higher amount of fat than almonds, but provide more energy in the form of calories.
  • Protein content: Almonds and walnuts are both protein powerhouses - containing 13% and 9% of protein content respectively. Thus, both these nuts are great sources of protein.
  • Mineral content: Both almonds and walnuts are rich in various kinds of minerals. When it comes to Iron, which is essential for muscle health and blood formation, both nuts contain very similar amounts (approx 5%). Almonds pack 19% magnesium - essential for strong bones, compared to the 11% in walnuts. Walnuts, however, have very high amounts of copper (50%) and manganese (54%) which prove to be useful in reducing symptoms of PMS as compared to almonds.
  • Fibre content: Fiber,which plays a vital role in completing the process of digestion, is another component that these nuts pack healthy amounts of. Almonds contain 16% fiber whereas walnuts have 8%.
  • Vitamin content: While walnuts contain 12% Vitamin B6, compared to the 3% in almonds, the real point of difference between these two highly healthy nuts is in their content of Vitamin E - essential for healthy skin and eyes. Almonds contain almost 48% of it, whereas walnuts contain only about 2% of the same.

Thus, we get a fair idea about the high nutritional content for both these nuts. They are both essential, especially if they can be incorporated into our diets in the correct proportions.

For me to guide anyone about diabetes -- more details about the person's height, weight, bp, lipids, dietary and lifestyle habits, other blood tests, etc are required. Stick to plant based whole foods -- such as vegetables, whole grains, lentils and beans and grams and fruits. And increase the level of physical activity -- say at least 30 to 45 minutes of moderate activity per day for at least 4 to 5 days a week is what is good for him. Cut down on fats and oils, fried foods, processed foods, restaurant foods, sweets, sugared beverages. Best wishes,

Dear lybrate user. Please don’t panic. You must understand ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION. There is nothing called erectile dysfunction while having masturbation. Loosing erection in the initial stages of sex or not having erection at all or having late erection or lack of sexual desire are called erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction can be a sign of a physical or psychological condition. It can cause stress, relationship strain, and low self-confidence. The main symptom is a man's inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Patients suffering from erectile dysfunction should first be evaluated for any underlying physical and psychological conditions. If treatment of the underlying conditions doesn't help, medications and assistive devices, such as pumps, can be prescribed. Yoga, meditation and diet could be prescribed once we know the basic reasons for it. Two natural treatments for ED that have shown promise are red ginseng and pomegranate juice. Ginseng is thought to increase nitric oxide production, leading to improved blood flow. Pomegranate juice is a potent antioxidant and can help too. Watermelon could also help. Dry cough and chest pain can be due to upper respiratory infection, lower respiratory infection, allergies or even gastro esophageal reflux disease. We need to find out the correct cause for your symptoms and treat accordingly. Take care.
