How To Deal With Boils

MBBS, Diploma in Venerology & Dermatology (DVD)

How To Deal With Boils

A boil or a skin abscess is a type of bacterial skin infection that leads to formation of a pus-filled red bump on the skin. It usually starts in an oil gland or a hair follicle on the face, the armpits, the neck or the shoulders. If a cluster of boils appears, it is called a carbuncle and this is a more severe infection than a boil. However, most boils are caused by minor infection and can be healed with simple treatment at home. Listed below are the various ways to deal with a boil:

  1. Boils are not entirely preventable but normal daily hygiene can reduce the frequency of the occurrence of boils.
  2. When you notice a boil formation, you should apply a hot compress on it. The heat helps to prevent the formation of too much pus by helping it drain faster. When the blood circulation to the area is improved by the heat, the antibodies help to draw out the germs.
  3. The boil usually drains on its own. You may try draining it yourself but only when it is soft. Poking a hard boil can be extremely painful; it may bleed and make the infection worse. It is usually best to let it drain by itself.
  4. When the boil starts draining, you can clean the infected area with an antibacterial soap daily till the boil is drained and flattened. You may clean it with some rubbing alcohol in order to prevent the germs in the pus from spreading to other areas of the body.
  5. The infected area can be kept covered with sterile gauze coated with antibiotic ointment.
  6. Penicillin-based antibiotics can be used to treat the boil but only if it is a severe infection.
  7. 7. If the boil is excessively painful, you can use pain relievers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.
  8. Avoid sitting in one particular position for too long because this increases the pain.
  9. It is important to wash your hands every time you touch the draining boil because the bacteria is extremely contagious and can spread to other areas of your skin as well as to other people.
  10. All the articles which have been used to treat the boils like the gauze, cloth, cotton and hot compress should either be discarded or disinfected to avoid spreading of the infection.

Keep hair clean. Make sure that your scalp and hair are always clean. It will help your hair grow faster. Dirt clogs the hair follicles, which makes it more difficult for hair to grow. However, do not shampoo every day, as men’s hair get easily damaged, and excessive shampooing can dehydrate hair and cause breakage. Shampoo twice a week while cleanse hair with conditioner daily.

I have question for my friend. He finished 12th std. @ 2015. His aim is to become a doctor. So he dropped a year and prepared for entrance exams. I also joined in the same year. We are not friends at that time. After joining as always I concentrated on my studies. And finally got 333 marks out of 720. But he has not prepared for exams throughout the year since he has got diverting towards love. So he got around 132. We both became friends after that and dropped one more year and studied. Now I got 431. My chances are high to get a MBBS seat in govt. College. But he has got 138. I think its not at all an improvement than last year. But this year he has studied a lot, practised. But he got nervous in exam hall and so he couldn't get it. Now he is planning to drop one more year. I have no confidence, but he is very stubborn that he can study only medicine not any other. His parents also accepted his decision. I have convinced a lot, but no use. So What could he do in this situation? He guarantee me that he would device a plan and he would crack the exam. Should I believe him? You think he could make it? Please I want a good support from you.

You are a very good human being and friend but let me tell you that if your friend is not ready to understand your concern regarding him he will never understand. So it's better to leave him with his decisions as his parents are also supporting his decisions. The best you can do is that tell him to make a plan B. As soon as he makes plan B he will give his 100% to his plan A i.e. medical entrance exam. Guide him how to prepare for the exam. He might be doing it the wrong way. If he is adamant about his decision then you also start supporting him and boost his morale. You don't have any other choice...:)

Hello doctor, I have a left cortical cyst on my left kidney measuring 11 by 8. Please tell me what is its better treatment and what are precautions that should I take. Thanks.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
If the cyst is causing pressure or other symptoms you have to do surgery . If your simple kidney cyst causes no signs or symptoms and doesn't interfere with your kidney function, you may not need treatment. Instead, your doctor may recommend that you have an imaging test, such as ultrasound, periodically to see whether your kidney cyst has enlarged. If your kidney cyst changes and causes signs and symptoms, you may choose to have treatment at that time. Sometimes a simple kidney cyst goes away on its own.

This could b either due to sensitivity due to loss of enamel surface or due to decay of tooth. Tooth decay can b treated by filling of tooth or by rct n capping of the decay is deep. Sensitivity can b reduced by using desensitizing toothpaste such as senquelf or sensodyne toothpaste by rubbing some amount of toothpaste onto your tooth surface n wait till 5 mins before rinsing it off. Get your teeth evaluated by dentist to know the cause of your problem n get treated accordingly. Regsrds.

My wife is 21 years old, her breast size is very small and have not developed properly, what measure should be taken?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Small breasts are rarely due to any significant anomaly but can cause much anguish to teens. It is often associated with low self-esteem and even depression especially when there is a history of taunting, which is a common practice among teen girls. However, it is not only young girls and teens who are worried about their breast size. Older women too are often unhappy about their small breasts and look for ways of enhancing them. Attitudes about breast size usually develop as a result of ongoing media presentations depicting large breasts as being attractive. Women with large breasts are also seen as being more desirable by the opposite sex. Breast size is often associated with sexuality and attraction and therefore the belief arises that the size of breasts may affect one’s social and interpersonal relationships. Causes of Small Breasts 1. Genetic Causes Breast hypoplasia, which is the underdevelopment of the breast may occur due to familial or genetic causes, without being linked to any pathological cause. It may also be a result of rare genetic disorders like Poland’s sydrome as well. Genetic body fat distribution Turner’s syndrome (ovarian agenesis) is a medical disorder that affects about 1 in every 2, 500 girls. It is a genetic condition in which a female does not have the usual pair of two X chromosomes. Besides other symptoms, there may be lack of breast development at the expected age, usually by age 13.2. Hormonal Causes Delayed menarche (first period) is discussed under primary amenorrhea. Hormone irregularities as a result of gynecological disorders that may also cause a range of menstrual symptoms like irregular menses and heavy periods. Shrinking of the breast tissue during menopause as a result of decreasing estrogen levels can cause a decrease in breast size. Other Causes Age Family history Eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia or severe dieting Severe weight loss, whether intentional or unintentional Certain Facts about Small Breasts Small breasts do not hinder breastfeeding in any way. Milk production is not hampered by small breasts. There is no relation between breast size and the development of breast cancer. About Increasing Breast Size Improving nutrition may help, especially where there is severe under-nutrition. Exercise does not increase breast size. Some exercises may develop the pectoral muscles beneath the breasts. Using padded bras may boost one’s self confidence. Being comfortable with one’s body and accepting that small breasts are beautiful can be a better way of restoring one’s self-image. Hormone supplementation like oral estrogen therapy may help in some cases where small or underdeveloped breasts may have a hormonal cause, such as in delayed menarche. Breast enhancement by means of breast implants can be a reliable method to increase breast size. Many women undergo this surgical procedure without considering the dangers and possible long term complications HOmoeopathic medicine SABAL SERR Q (Dr Reckeweg) Drink 10 drops in 10 ml fresh water 3 times daily B-SHAPE cream (BAKSON) Massage twice daily with inward motion of your hand fingers.----
