Frozen Shoulder: Causes and Ways to Treat it

Frozen Shoulder: Causes and Ways to Treat it

Adhesive capsulitis is the medical term for a frozen shoulder, which can be caused due to a variety of reasons. Scar tissues can grow in the shoulder joint when the said joint becomes thicker. This development keeps the shoulder from rotating in a normal manner, which can lead to a frozen shoulder. The most common symptoms of this condition include severe pain and stiffness as well as inflammation. Here are the causes and ways to treat this condition.

Causes: A frozen shoulder can be caused due to a sports injury as well as an accident. Also, a hormonal imbalance can cause this condition. A weak immune system may cause inflammation in various joints of the body, which makes motion difficult. Also, diabetes can give rise to a frozen shoulder as a side effect. If you have a sedentary lifestyle and do not exercise often enough, or have just been through surgery which has led to a prolonged period of inactivity, then you can be prone to this condition. Surgery will also leave your tissue and adhesions sensitive to inflammation. Scar tissue may end up forming in very extreme cases, over a period of at least nine months. This can limit your motion.

Risk Factors: Besides diabetes, hormonal changes and inactivity, people who have been through a stroke or surgery are most susceptible to this condition. Also, patients who are suffering from thyroid disorders can end up developing a frozen shoulder too.

Physical Therapy: One of the most recommended ways to deal with this condition is with physical therapy. This kind of therapy will help you in stretching your shoulder so that you get back some motion over a period of time. This process can take anywhere between a few weeks to a few months, depending on the severity of your condition. You must ask your doctor about other treatment options if this kind of therapy does not show results even after six months of intense and regular practice. Physical therapy can also be practiced at home, once you have learnt the technique from a physiotherapist.

Medication: One of the other ways to deal with a frozen shoulder is with the help of medication. Anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medicines can soothe the discomfort. These include aspirin, ibuprofen, as well as naproxen sodium. Also, if you are undergoing a lot of pain, the doctor can administer a steroid injection in the shoulder joint.

Surgery: If medication and physical therapy do not help in treating the condition effectively, then one can go in for an arthroscopic surgery to remove the scar tissue with a small incision and other kinds of surgery for breaking the adhesions as well.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Cervical Spondylosis - How Physiotherapy Can Help Treat it?

Cervical Spondylosis - How Physiotherapy Can Help Treat it?

Cervical spondylosis is an age related disorder affecting the discs and joints in your neck. The overuse of the bone and cartilage in the cervical spine of your neck leads to cervical spondylosis. While it is mostly caused by age, it can also be caused by other factors. Stiffness and severe, chronic pain are the most common problems with patients afflicted with cervical spondylosis. While in others, it might not cause problems and they can go about their daily activities.

Physiotherapy for Cervical Spondylosis
There is no cure for cervical spondylosis, but its symptoms can be treated with physiotherapy. If you have chronic pain in your neck, shoulder blades or arms, a physiotherapist can provide effective pain relief by strengthening your vertebrae and neck. This will improve your posture and prevent any relapse of the pain.

Firstly, the physiotherapist will evaluate your condition; check your reflexes and strength. Then, the physiotherapist will move on to the following treatments:

  1. Stretching, strengthening and straightening exercises: Before beginning these exercises, your physiotherapist will first apply cold or heat to the affected area and then proceed with a deep tissue massage or electric stimulation. When your muscles are relaxed, the exercises will begin only then. These exercises are performed to strengthen the muscles in your neck. Through these, you will learn how to improve your range of movement and posture.
  2. Neck traction: Pulling your head to stretch out your spine is called neck traction. This technique is used to improve movement and ease the pain. Traction is used to open the spaces between the vertebras gently in order to ease pressure on the distressed discs. Traction is done continuously or sporadically, with short periods of rest in between. If you cannot find the right physiotherapist to do this for you, there are devices to help you stretch your spine.
  3. Cervical collars and pillows: Neck pillows or cervical pillows, are made to keep your neck steady while you sleep. Cervical collars are also called neck braces which are used to support the neck. While cervical collars have been proven to be quite beneficial, there isn’t much evidence to support cervical pillows in treating cervical spondylosis. You can always consult physiotherapist before purchasing a cervical pillow.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area.

Your wife is suffering from Allodynia which means a stimulus which is normally not painful (ex. touch ) is causing pain. Allodynia occurs due to problems in nerves which can occur in your case due to some problems in spine causing nerve compression, inflammation of nerves due to some autoimmune disease or even Fibromyalgia. Consult a Pain Specialist in your city for evaluation and treatment.\

Causes, symptoms and treatment for Knee Pain

Hello, I'm Dr. Duraj Prakash, Orthopedic Surgeon practicing in areas of South Delhi and specializing in the field of knee replacement surgery and Orthoscopic reconstruction procedure of knee and shoulder. Today I'll briefly talk about common problems of the knee and how to prevent degeneration of knee in people who're reaching middle age group. Knee arthritis is one of the common problems that we're facing as population ages and people want to beome and lead more and more active life. Generally knee arthritis has multiple reasons, why somebody gets knee arthritis others don't. It could be related to genetics, lifestyle, weight of the person and activity level. There is a small group of people where a neglected injury very rapidly damages the joint and gives rise to premature or early athritis.

The symptoms of knee arthritis are:
1. Pain
2. and Stiffness

Many people ust complain of morning stiffness and the issue becomes complicated if the person trips or falls because weak muscles fall in arthritis. Make sure that cause people trip and fall moee frequently. So the way to avoid is to maintain proper weight. In case someone has got early childhood deformities like bow legs and knock knees it should be appropiately corrected in younger age group. Then any injury which a person may sustain, it may look innocous, it may hurt for a couple of days and then becomes alright should never be neglected. If the problem is instability, if your knee feels it is going to slip out of the alignment on a rough surface you must go see an orthopedic surgeon.

Another group of people is ones who are suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis where the problem starts with fingers and small joints of hands and feet but gradually progresses to the knees. These people should regularly do exercise to maintain muscle strength and ensure that they take proper medication in time to prevent long term damage to the knee. Regular strengthening of the knee muscles, the thigh muscles which stabilizes the knee goes a long way in preventing any problem in knee joint. Even with mild arthritis if your knee and your thigh muscles are strong, your likelihood of getting a surgery is very rare. In addition when the muscles are strengthened not only the knee feels better, likelihood of fall also reduces to a great extent.

In those people where the knee is already damaged the technology now offers us many remedial measures starting from small penaul procedures to regenerate the cartilage to upcoming procedure like platelet rich plasma, stem cell therapy and reconstruction therapies ranging from many many ways of small surgery partial knee replacement and leading onto total knee rreplacement which everybody knows right now. The smaller procedures have a very big advantage in terms of safety, better function, smaller stay in the hospital and equally long functional life of the prosthesis. With the newer technology it is possible to treat these conditions but then the best remedy is to take step before the problem arises. So stay healthy, keep active and remain fit.
