I think you should arrange for xray of his arm and leg and consultation with an orthopaedic without delay. Pain relief will just take care of the symptoms but not the core problem. U can take any pain killer. As I can not prescribe medication on open forum please contact online.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Causes and Treatments of Hernia

Hi! I am Dr. Ashit Sharma. I’m a consultant journal and laparoscopic surgeon. Today I’m going to tell you about the most common surgical problems like Hernia. We are talking about Hernia today. Hernia is a very common presentation in surgical practice.

Now, what is Hernia? Hernia is protrusion of sack from abdominal wall through the weakest point in the abdominal wall. We can say there is umbilicus. You must have seen ladies, fatty ladies with a bulging coming from umbilical area that is called Umbilical Hernia in the same way is inguinal canal. Inguinal canal is a tube which is connecting link between the testis and the abdominal cavity. Sometimes, sack protrudes through this inguinal canal, this is called inguinal Hernia. So many causes are there, like whenever intra-abdominal pressure is raised, it may cause the protrusion of sack through the weakest point in the abdominal wall.

Suppose patient is suffering from chronic asthma, chronic cough or allergic bronchitis, so every time he is coughing, intra-abdominal pressure raises and it may lead to Herniation. In the same way in old age group, if you see, for example, a person who is suffering from prostate enlargement and he strains for urination so there is increase in intra-abdominal pressure and it may lead to protrusion of sack into the inguinal canal and that is called inguinal Hernia. Suppose, a person is obese, again, a lot of intra-abdominal fat increases and this increases the intra-abdominal pressure, a person is doing excessive exercise including weight lifting, again, he’s putting the extra pressure inside the abdominal cavity and this is a cause of Herniation.

How we can diagnose and how to prevent and how to treat this condition? So, first of all, the causative factor should be removed. If he’s suffering from chronic cough, that has to be taken care of. He’s suffering from prostate enlargement, that should be operated and passage should be clear and if obesity is there, try to reduce your weight. Don’t do heavy extreme exercises. Don’t lift much of weight and don’t take high protein diet. Because, in an elderly age group, lot of weakness is there in the muscles. Again, this is a cause of the same problem.

At Life Aid Medical Centre, we treat these Hernia problems through laparoscopy. Laparoscopic Hernia repairs surgeries we are doing, i.e. without any incision and without any prolong stay of the patient. So, this is the basic thing which we can prevent by avoiding unnecessarily increase in intra-abdominal pressure and one thing is very important Incisional Hernia. It is the weakest point where scar is there, after post-surgical scar and it can protrude through this scar weakening and that is called Incisional Hernia. Again, this is Herniation and that can be very well repaired by laparoscopic surgery.

So, you can catch me at my hospital ie Life Aid Medical Centre, with Lybrate by prior appointment.

DEAR Shoulder pain Physiotherapy uses a number of different physical methods to promote healing. If you are referred to a physiotherapist, they should explain to you what treatment they will use and how it will work. Possible treatments include: •specific shoulder exercises – for example, if you have shoulder instability, you may be given exercises to strengthen your shoulder •massage – where the physiotherapist uses their hands to manipulate your shoulder Read more about some of the different techniques used inphysiotherapy. Shoulder exercises If you have shoulder pain, it's important to keep your shoulder joint mobile with light and gentle movement. Not using your shoulder can cause your muscles to waste away and may make any stiffness worse. Therefore, if possible, you should continue using your shoulder as normal. If your shoulder is very stiff, exercise may be painful. Your GP or physiotherapist can give you exercises to do without further damaging your shoulder. You may be given exercises to do on your own, or you may complete the exercises with supervision from your GP or physiotherapist. You may also have manual therapy, where the healthcare professional moves your arm for you. Manual therapy uses special techniques to move the joints and soft tissues in your shoulder. One review of a number of studies found that long-term physiotherapy was as effective as surgery for impingement syndrome (any type of damage to the tendons in the rotator cuff). I HOPE you WILL FITT AND FINE.

Hi lybrate user, first there is no abnormal growth of disc rather compression of disc and waking of posterior annulus causing disc herniation. I believe surgery done was probably laminectomy or micro discectomy. In 60% of patients undergoing open spine surgery gets pain after 2/3 years not because surgery was not done properly but because of manipulation of dural membrane which causes adhesion & then this condition is labelled as failed back surgey syndrome (fbss). Treatment of fbss depends on current symtoms and mri findings. If there is no acute or recurrent herniation then something called adhesinolysis (percutaneous neuroplasty) can be done to break all the adhesions. If there is recurrent herniation then it can be removed by endoscopic spine surgery without manipulating dural membrane, if above mentioned procedures not possible due to severity of degeneration or migration of disc or ligament flavum hypertrophy then spinal cord implant or intrathecal pump can be placed for pain. Hope it helps.

5 Must Do Exercises To Maintain A Healthy Spine!

Spinal cord is a very important part of your body as it renders support to your body.  It also gives your body a good posture and thus maintaining a healthy spine is very essential. An unfit spinal cord can lead to various complicated problems.

The following are 5 must do exercises in order to maintain a healthy spine:

  1. Exercising your core muscles can help you to maintain a fit spine. Your core muscles refer to the muscles of your lower back and your abdominal muscles. These muscles give support to your spine. So exercising them can give you a healthy spine.
  2. Walking regularly can also give you a healthy spine. It is suitable for people of all age groups. Daily walking can help you to recover from various spinal illnesses as well such as spinal stenosis.
  3. Swimming is also a good exercise for maintaing a fit spinal cord. Swimming helps to exercise all back muscles and thus, gives you a healthy spinal cord.
  4. Lying down straight with your face down on an even and firm surface for about twenty minutes can help you to get a healthy spine and also a good body posture.
  5. Cycling can also help you achieve a healthy spine. While cycling, all your back muscles and the muscles of the lower part of your body are engaged in physical activity. If the muscles of your lower back are strong, then it can help you to keep your spine fit.

Other than these exercises, stretching your limbs and other stretching exercises are also beneficial for a healthy spine. But it is highly recommended for you to consult a doctor before doing any exercise in order to be guided in the proper manner and avoid further complications.

You should continue your physiotherapy if you are having pain. Few things I would like to tell you, firstly when you sleep turned to one side you should try to bring your knees close to your chest by folding your hip and knees and keep a pillow between your thighs. When you sleep straight with your face facing the ceiling, you should try to keep your legs folded by putting 2-3 pillows bellow your knees. This will keep your back relaxed in night. Even when you sit for long hours you should keep some foot rest bellow your feet so that you knees are slightly above the level of you seat. Try avoid long hours travelling.
