8 Dietary Changes That Will Help To Lower Homocysteine levels

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
8 Dietary Changes That Will Help To Lower Homocysteine levels

8 easy dietary changes that will help to lower homocysteine levels

1. Eat less fatty meat, more fish and vegetable protein eat no more than four servings of lean meat a week; fish (not fried) at least three times a week; and if you’re not allergic or intolerant, a serving of a soya-based food, such as tofu, tempeh or soya sausages, plus beans, such as kidney beans, chickpea hummus or baked beans, at least five times a week.

2. Eat your greens have at least five servings of fruit or vegetables a day. This means eating two pieces of fruit every single day, and three servings of vegetables. Vary your selections from day to day. Make sure half of what’s on your plate for each main meal is vegetables.

3. Have a clove of garlic a day either eat a clove of garlic a day, or take a garlic supplement every day. You can take garlic oil capsules or powdered garlic supplements.

4. Cut back on tea and coffee don’t drink more than one cup of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee or two cups of tea, in a day. Instead choose from the wide variety of herbal teas and grain coffees available.

5. Limit your alcohol limit your alcohol intake to no more than half a pint of beer, or one glass of red wine, in a day. Ideally, limit your intake to two pints of beer or four glasses of wine a week.

6. Reduce your stress if you are under a lot of stress, or find yourself reacting stressfully much of the time, make a decision to reduce your stress load by changing both the circumstances that are giving you stress and your attitude. Simple solutions abound: you can do yoga, meditation and/or exercise, or see a counsellor if you have some issues to resolve. These steps can make all the difference.

7. Stop smoking if you smoke, make a decision to stop, and seek help to do it. There is simply no safe level of smoking as far as homocysteine and your health is concerned.

8. Supplement a high-strength multivitamin every day. Excellent-quality multis are available in the market to keep your homocysteine levels in check, you’ll need one that gives at least 20mg of b6, 200mcg of folic acid and 10mcg of b12. This diet, lifestyle and supplement plan has the potential to halve your homocysteine score in weeks. If it's high, then you may need to supplement additional nutrients, as outlined in the table above. The goal is to bring your score to below 6 or 7 if you are over 50. Your homocysteine score is probably the best objective measure of whether you are achieving optimum nutrition for you.

Summary: keeping your homocysteine levels low

• Test your homocysteine level.
• If it’s above 6, supplement the levels of homocysteine-lowering nutrients given in the table above.
• Also take a high-strength multi-vitamin giving at least 20mg of b6, 200mcg of folic acid and 10mcg of b12, even if your h score isn’t above 6.
• Follow the h factor plan as shown above.
• Re-test yourself every three months until your homocysteine is below 6.

Blepharoplasty - Who Can Undergo The Same?

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, DNB - Plastic Surgery
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Gurgaon
Blepharoplasty - Who Can Undergo The Same?

Sagging eyebrows, baggy eyelids (both upper and lower eyelids) or under eye bags can be quite annoying and uncomfortable. Though mostly observed among aged people, the problem can equally affect people of other age groups. Left unattended for a long time, the sagging eyebrows or droopy eyelids can even interfere with one's vision, especially the peripheral vision. The Eye Lift or Blepharoplasty comes as a much-needed savior that can work wonders to deal with droopy eyelids and similar problems with efficiency and precision.

Who can undergo the Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty comes as the best option under the following situations

  • The droopy upper eyelids affecting the side or peripheral vision to a great extent.
  • The increased bagginess of the lower eyelids results in the appearance of wrinkles, making one look older than their age.
  • The appearance of under eye bags, especially in young adults.

The steps involved in Blepharoplasty

  • Before the surgery, a patient is given a local anesthesia in the form of intravenous (IV) sedation to ease the pain and the discomfort.
  • Incisions are then made along the natural lines of the eyelid to remove the excess skin and the fats.
  • The surgeon then carefully makes minute stitches to close the incisions. This is mainly carried out in the case of upper eyelids.
  • For the lower eyelids, the procedure may be different depending on the type of incision.
    • In some case, the saggy and excess muscles, fats or skin may be excised through incisions made along the margins of the eyelash.
    • Alternately, the excess fats can also be removed through incisions made inside the lower eyelids. This may be followed by an Erbium Laser Resurfacing to take care of the fine lines (in both the cases).
  • The surgery, however, may not be as simple as it sounds. Make sure you opt for an experienced surgeon. Research on the matter well enough before you go for the surgery.
  • In most of the cases, sans any complications, the stitches are removed within a week or two.
  • Minor side-effects such as swelling, irritation, watery eyes, bruising, blurred vision, pain, the eyelids appearing numb may be observed.
  • However, consult your surgeon immediately in the case of excruciating pain, loss of vision, infection at the incision site, severe bleeding, difficulty in closing the eyes, dry eyes, to name a few.

Precautionary steps for a faster healing
The hourly use of cold compress or ice packs (for about 10-12 minutes) following the surgery can be of great help.

  • Avoid rubbing the eyes or wearing a contact lens for some days following the surgery.
  • Do not miss out on a single medicine or eyedrops advised by the doctor.
  • Smoking, strenuous and rigorous physical activities such as exercise, swimming or lifting of heavy objects should be avoided for at least a week or as advised by the surgeon.
  • Avoid direct contact with the sun or going outside the house without wearing dark glasses.
  • Practice a good personal hygiene. Keep the eyelids clean but don't be harsh.

Homeopathy for Osteoarthritis: Why is it a Good Option?

Homeopathy for Osteoarthritis: Why is it a Good Option?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that affects the various bone and joints health, leading to painful movement and thereby limiting the patient's mobility.  Knees, hips, joints of hands and legs are affected.

Symptoms of OA

The symptoms revolve around the bones and joints including:

  1. Pain and stiffness of the joints
  2. Swelling of the joints
  3. Inability to form a clench
  4. Difficulty holding things
  5. Stooped posture
  6. Weakness of legs and hands
  7. Reduced height over time

Treatment options in allopathy are limited to nonsteroidal analgesics to control pain and in severe cases, surgical correction, in case of OA.  However, homeopathy takes into account the triggering symptoms, the associated symptoms, and the status of the immune system before deciding on a treatment regimen.

With this holistic approach, homeopathy achieve the following:

  1. Reduce the pain, swelling and stiffness
  2. Slows the pace of further degeneration
  3. Improves mobility of the affected joint(s)
  4. Improves the body's overall immune system, thereby allow the body to promote healing on its own
  5. Homeopathic intervention in the early phases is particularly helpful, as it will arrest disease progression
  6. It also enable better absorption of minerals and nutrients essential for bone health. This allows healing of existing bone fractures and avoids further bone damage by strengthening the bones
  7. Homeopathic treatment also enables the body's chemical state to withstand stress and illnesses better
  8. It vitalizes the body's natural healing and ability to repair itself, to create a better state of health and well-being

Some of the popular homeopathic medications based on areas and associated symptoms are listed below:

Knee joints:

  1. Bryonia Alba: Pain worsened with movement, relieved with rest; associated with swelling and stiffness of the joints; difficulty in climbing stairs.
  2. Calcarea Carbonica:  Swelling and pain that is worsened when getting up from a seated position. The joints feel cold and painful.
  3. Sulphur: Worse with climbing stairs, prolonged standing, feeling of warmth in the knees.

Hip Joints:

  1. Colcynthis: Cramping pain improved by pressure.
  2. Rhus Toxicodendron: Pain when getting up from a seated position.
  3. Pulsatilla Nigricans: Associated with muscle stiffness and cramping.

Finger joints:

  1. Antimonium Crudum: The pain pain gets worse in cold weather, improved by applying something warm)
  2. Benzoic Acid: There is an associated crackling sound when the fingers are moved or if there are nodes in the area of joints. . The urine is highly offensive in these people.
  3. Calcara Fluorica:  There are stony hard nodes formed in the joint area, greatly reducing the mobility.

These medications are safe, completely natural, do not induce habit formation, and are approved by FDA.  They don't just treat the symptoms but help manage the patient as a whole.  This justifies why homeopathy is definitely a good option in treating osteoarthritis.
