Excessive Use of Mobile Phones in Children

MA - Clinical Psychology, P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counseling, BA In Psychology

Excessive Use of Mobile Phones in Children

The most advanced and effective communication device in this century is mobile phone. Mobile phone is not only being used by the corporate or highly qualified professional. People from all type of social group have mobile phone in their hands now. Usage of the mobile phone is not increased only with all social groups but also with people of all age groups. Children are the more noticeable group as they are using cell phones of all types. A recent research study shows that children are really capable of using any advanced type of mobile phones even without any proper guidance. Though mobile phones are the effective mode of communication, it is a well known fact that it also has adverse side effects if being over used. The mobile phones emit shockwave radioactive radiations that affect the body in various manners.

Adverse effects of mobile phone usage:

Today's children are growing up in a radio-frequency environment that never existed in human history before. The radiation emitted by mobile phones and mobile phone masts can have adverse effects on children. Some include:

  1. Affects your Immunity Status: cell phones after a full day usage contains many germs on their display which are highly numbered than your toilet seats. These germs are easily transferred to your body as you touch frequently or use close to your face for talking. This increases the risk of exposure to the germs and reduces your immune strength as immune status are not fully developed for children.
  2. Increase Risk of Chronic Pains: prolonged use of mobile phones for playing games or texting requires continuous movement for your hands which may develop chronic pain in joints of your shoulders and hands.
  3. Vision Problem: children when concentrate much on playing games in mobile phone they even fail to blink frequently with the increased interest and attraction towards the game. This causes the dryness of the conjunctiva and also increases the ocular tension.
  4. Affects your emotions negatively and increases the stress level

Mobile Phone Safety For Kids:

As a parent, you must take preventive measures to minimize your child's exposure to the harmful effects of mobile phones. These include:

  • Do not give cell phone if your child is under 16 years. A child's brain is too sensitive to withstand the effects of mobile radiation.
  • Do not let your child hold a mobile phone directly up to his head. Use an air-tube headset instead.
  • Do not let your child make calls in buses, trains, cars, and elevators. The mobile phone works harder to get the signal out through the metal, which increases the power level.
  • Do not let your child use cell phone when the signal is weak. It will increase the power to the maximum, as the phone attempts to connect to a new relay antenna.
  • Limit the use of cell phone around children.
  • Make sure that there is no mobile phone mast or network tower near your home or your kid's school.
  • Do not let children take mobile phones to school.
  • Do not leave mobile phones in your children's bedroom at night.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Asthma in Children: Diagnosis and Treatment

MAMC, MRCPCH, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Noida
Asthma in Children: Diagnosis and Treatment

Has your child been coughing frequently? Is the cough chronic in nature, making your child breathe rapidly and does he/she complain about a tightened chest? These symptoms signify that your child is having asthma. Asthma is a medical condition characterized by paroxysmal wheezing respiration dyspnoea. It is common in children and an affected child experiences difficulty in breathing, and a whizzing sound is produced, especially during expiration. Asthma may lead to severe health complications and needs immediate diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnosis: The diagnosis of asthma is based on the symptoms, medical history and a physical examination of the child.

The different modes of asthma diagnosis are as follows:

  1. Medical history and symptoms: You must tell the doctor about any history of breathing trouble with your child or whether there are chances of other inherited health conditions. You must explain your child's symptoms properly, which may include coughing, wheezing, chest pain or tightness and others if observed.
  2. Physical examination: A physical exam will be carried out in your child where the doctor will listen to his heart and lungs, and look for eye or nose allergies.
  3. Medical tests: A chest X-ray of the child has to be carried out, along with a simple lung function test known as spirometry. This test measures the amount of air present in the lungs and determines how fast it can be exhaled. Spirometry enables a doctor to determine the severity of the asthma. Some other tests are also carried out for the identification of asthma triggers. They include allergy skin testing, blood tests and X-rays to know if sinus infections are affecting the asthma. An asthma test determines the amount of nitric oxide in your child's breath.

Treatment: Based on your child's severity of asthma symptoms and his medical history, the doctor will provide you with an action plan to treat the same. This action plan explains all the medications your child requires, the dosage and schedule of the medicines. The plan also includes points on what to do when the asthma worsens and when an emergency treatment is required. Anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to children who require bronchodilator medication. All asthma medicines used by adults can be used in case of children but in lower dosages.

You should give the asthma medications to your child using a home nebulizer or a breathing machine. A nebulizer delivers asthma drugs by transforming them from liquid to a mist. The child gets the drug by breathing it via a face mask.

In order to control and manage asthma in children, they must avoid the triggers and should keep away from any source of smoke. A doctor must be consulted to know about the best diagnosis and treatment methods.

There will always be variation by which the child feeds. She may feed 1hrly, 2hrly or 3rly or 4hrly. She will take when she is hungry so do no be stressed. She will take amount of milk which she requires. IF there is adequate weight gain and 6-7 urine passage per day then she is getting adequate milk. Infants usually sleep after taking milk so rest assured. Also many infants cry before passing urine and that is perfectly alright. Even after passing urine if she is crying then kindly check her local urinary passage parts as there might be rash which may be causing burning sensation leading to excessive crying.

My 4.5 month old baby boy did nit like breast milk and formula milk. Whenever we have tried to feed him they are reacting for vomiting. Please suggest me what to do.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH)

Any normal baby will be accepting mothers milk or formula milk. If not accepting, investigations in a hospital will need to be done and under the care of a child specialist. Till then orally juice can be started.

My daughter 3 years and 9 months. She was suffering from cold and cough. Especially at nights. We made all tests and doctor says some asthmatic related problem and giving antibiotics, and we are using them from 2 years. She has not recovered. Even heart related check up also done. Doctor says while she grows she will recover, as she has nothing wrong in her health. But the cold and cough were suffering her lot, especially at nights. What we have to do.

Vitiation of kapha dhatu in children, which is more evident at this age, can be controlled by simple herbal remedies esp designed by ayurveda and in use for centuries. These are little slow but safe, no side effects and are for longer use. It's my experience that you can actually prevent bronchitis and asthma like problems with the constant use of these things for few weeks/ months as per need. Generally there is always relapse of problems if synthetic and toxic drugs are used at this age and slowly antibiotics and anti asthmatics will be needed in 90% of such cases throughout life. Steam inhalation, herbals with honey and some mineral based medicines simply prepared at home will definitely improve the quality of life of child.

Hello lybrate-user, congratulations on being a new parent. Firstly I would say mostly babies spit out milk in a curdled form which is quite normal. If the baby vomits after feeds then the best way out is to keep the baby upright for about 15-20 minutes after feeding the baby. This will lessen the chances of baby vomitting out the milk. Secondly your wife can eat anything and everything as that has no relation to the baby vomitting. She needs good amount of nutrition post delivery and more so while lactating so kindly do not cut down her vegetable intake but give her plenty of it and a good balanced diet.

Hello Doctor. My baby is just 8 months old and since last five days she is suffering from too much of cough and cold....
If it is simple cold n cough without involvement of lung i.e. URTI, for last 5 days, now there is no role of antibiotics. I think she is having blocked nose. Some time salbutamol makes the condition worst. I repeat if there is no involvement of lung infection n baby taking feed near to normal, stop all medicine just instill saline nasal drops in each nostril 3-4 times in a day and give her sips of lukewarm water now n then. Otherwise continue tt as advised by your doctor.

Hello doctor. I am 32 years old woman and have delivered a baby boy in the month of July. Now my son is 39 days old and I am on exclusive breastfeeding. In last few days I have noticed that milk production has decreased. Please prescribe me an oral medicine to increase the breast milk production.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
Some time it is perception of mother that less milk is producing while it is not so particularly in exclusive breastfeeding mother. If baby is gaining weight about 30 gms in a day there is no cause of worry. Suckling is natural medicine to enhance milk production. If really milk production is reduced consult your doctor to check if it is not due to side effects of any medication you are taking.
