Ophthalmologist,
I have red eyes whenever there is change in climate, what I should do?
Red eyes occurring in summer season can be due to mainly two causes. 1. Vernal keratoconjuctivitis 2. Dry eyes if you have no itching and have started recently, most likely you must be having mild dry eyes. Start eye drops refresh tears 4 times a day. Avoid hot and dusty environment use goggles outside don't sit near a ac or directly under the fan. Keep windows close while driving a car. Use helmet if driving a bike. Kindly consult a ophthalmologist to rule out other causes.

Redness of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1)Allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2)Infectious conjunctivitis : this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3)Foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles(more common with people working in the iron industry) The solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist AT THE CLINIC. (4)Raised intraocular pressure: This is a condition known as glaucoma. it is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral(occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5)Inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This is known as "uveitis". It is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. FROM THE SYMPTOMS DESCRIBED BY YOU, it could be due to inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This condition, as previously mentioned by me, is known as uveitis. To accurately diagnose it, it would be required to check your eyes personally. For more guidance, you could get in touch via the video facility offered by lybrate. Hope my suggestions helped you. Take care, regards-Dr. Chaitanya.

Cataract Myths and Facts

Cataract Myths and Facts

When Sheena (42), a banking professional, got to know that her mother (72) has been diagnosed with a cataract formation in both her eyes, she didn't know how to react. The thought of 'second opinion' was constantly running through her mind, making it difficult for her to concentrate at work, just then an acquaintance informed Sheena about all the misconceptions she had about Cataract Surgery and the treatments available. Probably, for Sheena, Cataract Surgery still meant the way it used to be during her grandparents' time - waiting for surgery until the cataract ripens, the process of undergoing pain, wearing black tinted glasses for over a month, no TV, and endless list of precautions to be followed post operative. Infact, there are numerous people like Sheena who still are ignorant about the Blade-Free Laser Cataract Surgery.

Apart from being blade-less, through this Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery, it takes less than 1 minute to finish the surgical process! What's more? Well, this latest technique also offers a totally prick-less, painless, bloodless, stitch-less and a bandage free solution to the patient. And, the results are immediate and effective.

Let's debunk the misinformation about Cataract Surgery and help you get to the truth.

Myth#1 Cataracts 'grow' on top of the eye.

FACT:False! Cataracts are a clouding of the eye's lens, and the lens is within the eye, not on its surface. Therefore, during the surgery, the clouded lens of an eye is removed and replaced with an artificial/synthetic lens with a process called Intraocular Lens (IOL) implantation.

Myth#2 Cataract Surgery is scary and painful.

FACT: Not true. Infact, it is one of the safest surgeries possible. Though it can be slightly uncomfortable but shouldn't be painful. Usually four out of five people say that the surgery was easier than they had expected.

Myth#3 I'll need reading glasses after Cataract Surgery.

Fact: Not necessary! New generation Multifocal and 'monovision' replacement lenses correct vision at various points, near and far, and can sometimes reduce the need for glasses too.

Myth#4 A cataract must be 'ripe' before it can be removed.

FACT: In the past this was true, however, with modern cataract surgery, a cataract does not have to 'ripen' to be removed. You can go ahead with a cataract removal surgery as soon as it begins to affect your vision and quality of life.

Myth#5 Only older people develop cataracts.

FACT: Cataracts are common among people over 65 years of age; however, cataracts can occur in people who are younger resulting from conditions such as diabetes, certain medications and other eye problems. In some cases cataracts can be present at time of birth; called congenital cataracts.

Myth#6 Cataracts can spread from one eye to the other.

FACT: False! Cataracts can develop in one eye or both of them, but they do not spread.

Give warm compresses over the swelling. Take plenty of fluids and if it is very painful you will need a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

DOMS, MBBS
Ophthalmologist,
I have heavy number in my eye what should do?
Get your refraction done and wear spectacles eat green veggies. Carrots. Strain less your eyes. Relax your eyes in between work. Blink regularly if working for long time on computer. Lower the brightness of your screen. Work under adequately illuminated conditions. If needed wear corrective spectacles. These r few things you can take care of. Otherwise as such no options available which wd increases your eyesight. You can go for contact lens or refractive surgery. But before that you have to undergo detailed refraction and corneal examination. If you satisfy the criteria you can go for refractive surgery.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
I am suffering from myopia and I bears 2.5D lenses Is there any surgery to perfectly cure my eye sight.
Hello, as your eye power is less, try the following before undergoing surgery. Include the following for getting better vision: vitamins a, c, e, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. Dha is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for strengthening eye muscles: -begin by partially closing your eyes; the lids should only be halfway shut. After holding for 10-15 seconds, close your eyes very slowly. Take a few deep breaths to increase oxygen in the blood. -warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. -hold a pen at arm's length. Focus your gaze on the tip of the pen. Bring the pen closer to your nose at a slow and steady pace. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times. -concentrate your vision on the tip of your nose. Then shift your gaze to an object further away, either at arm's length or 20 feet away. Then shift your eyes back to the tip of your nose. Repeat this exercise 10 times. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Begin by look to the left-most position (without moving your head) and hold to stretch your eye muscles. Hold for 5 counts. Blink and return your gaze back to look straight in front of you. Then look to the right-most position with your gaze and hold for 5 counts. Repeat 3 times, blinking between each hold. Then, repeat this exercise looking up and then down. Do not forget about blinking. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Look up and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look up to and to your left for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your left for 5 seconds. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Medication: take homoeopathic medicine which will help you in preventing first and then reducing the power of your eyes (if the eye power is less). Take physostigma 6/ thrice daily for 1 month and instill euphrasia eye drops twice a day. Thereafter, revert back for further guidance.

I want to know what is the max and min time best for the exposure of eyes to the artificial lights like TV and mobile. Also whether increase in screen brightness of mobile or laptop could strain the eyes of instead they help for the eyes.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
I want to know what is the max and min time best for the exposure of eyes to the artificial lights like TV and mobile...
There is no any scale for measurement of max. And minimum time for exposure of eyes to tv/mobile but taking precautions while using them is the best way to avoid and nullify the effects of strong lights. Increase in screen brightness of mobile or laptop could definitely strain the eyes ------------------------------------if you work on a computer, taking eye breaks for five minutes every hour can lessen the strain on your eyes. Simply closing your eyes for a few moments can also do wonders. Try standing up, moving around, or taking a short walk to help regain concentration. Regular eye exercises that involve focusing on different distances can help prevent future straining. Blink often. Blinking refreshes and replenishes your eyes naturally. While watching tv/mobile make sure that the lightening in room is proper and you are at least at a distance of 10 feet from tv to reduce and negate the effects. You can also reduce the intensity of the tv/mobile screen by attaching a filter or by getting an eye-friendly screen. If you are having trouble with blinking due to the dryness of your eyes, try using homoeopathic cinelube eyedrops (hapdco) 3 times daily.

I'm 20 years old. In bright light, I saw some eye floaters in the field of my vision only in one eye. Actually I use computer about 9-10 hours regularly, is that a reason for this? What are remedies for this?

I'm 20 years old. In bright light, I saw some eye floaters in the field of my vision only in one eye.
Actually I use ...
Hello. Eye floaters can be annoying, but they generally don't interfere with your sight. But sometimes eye floaters are a sign of a more serious condition. Immediate medical attention is especially important if the floaters are accompanied by flashes of light or a loss of side vision. Causes of floaters: Most eye floaters are caused by small flecks of a protein called collagen. The back compartment of the eye is filled with a gel-like substance called vitreous humor. As you age, the vitreous and its millions of fine collagen fibers shrink and become shred-like. Shreds can accumulate in the vitreous. The clear vitreous gel which completely fills the back of the eye earlier in life decreases in size and no longer can fill this space…. it pulls away from the retina and it is often the areas of previous attachment to the retina which are seen as floaters as they now float freely in the vitreous gel. Rarely, eye floaters can result from other eye surgery or: Eye disease Eye injury Diabetic retinopathy Crystal-like deposits that form in the vitreous Eye tumors such as lymphoma (rarely) If they are bothersome, you can move them away from your field of vision by moving your eyes. This maneuver shifts the fluid in your eyes. Looking up and down is usually more effective than looking from side to side.
