Back Pain: Is It Slip Disc? How Can Physiotherapy Help?

What causes a slip (herniated) disc?

Violent injury or the normal aging process or by everyday activities- lifting heavy objects the wrong way, stretching too hard during a sports activity, commonly happens in neck (cervical spine) or lower back (lumbar spine).

How can physiotherapy reduce pain and disc pressure? 

To know how does physiotherapy helps first we need know about the occurrence of events at spine after prolapsed disc.

Whenever disc herniation occurs muscles try to protect slip of the disc as a result there is sudden muscles spasm because of which there sudden onset of pain and slipped disc also causes lot of inflammation when it presses surrounding ligaments and vessels. Situation worsens when person tries to move with stiff back more pain results due to wrong movement of muscle.

If pain killers are taken then till an extent they help to reduce inflammation and spasm, but prolapsed disc is mechanical problem. Compression on ligaments and occlusion of blood vessel persists. Pain comes back on stopping pain killers.

Physiotherapy works on the disc compression by correcting the alignment (posture). With manual therapy (mobilization) and electrotherapy instruments compression and pain reduces.

For, exercises are prescribed in opposite direction of disc compression so further compression can be reduced and strong muscles can support the spine inefficient way. Physical therapy works on the cause of the pain, not just suppresses it.

It might be due to gastric trouble. Kindly do breathing exercises which might help you to get reduced with pain in the back and right shoulder. This might be cervical pain (neck pain) and that's the reason the pain radiates until the shoulder blades. If you keep ice that would help and along side you can do hot water fermentation. You shall use cervical collar which would help you to reduce the radiating pain ie. Due to the nerve compression.

Aside from seeing your doctor regularly and following your prescribed treatment plan, staying active is probably the best thing you can do for ankylosing spondylitis. Regular exercise can help relieve pain, improve posture, and maintain flexibility. Before beginning an exercise program, speak with a physiotherapist about designing a program that’s right for you. Another important thing you can do for yourself is to practice good posture and sleep on a firm mattress and avoid the use of a pillow in order to prevent spine curvature.

Homeopathic Treatment For Knee Pain!

Knee pain is referred to as a condition when the knee joints (which are responsible for walking, running, sitting and standing along with bearing the maximum body weight for most forms of physical activities) are significantly inflamed, giving rise to a severe pain in particular areas or the entire knee joint. There might also be severe stiffness around the knee joint which might make it very difficult to function.

Knee pain might occur due to obesity, old age, different forms of arthritis, severe injury in the knee or the associated ligament or bones, knee cap dislocation, overuse of the knee joint and infections of the knee joint.

Homeopathic Treatment For Knee Pain:

Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine. The selection of remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity by using holistic approach. This is the only way through which a state of complete health can be regained by removing all the sign and symptoms from which the patient is suffering. The aim of homoeopathy is not only to remove the symptom of knee pain but to cure its underlying cause.   1. Bryonia Alba – This homeopathic preparation is effective in curing knee pain with the symptoms of severe pain in the knee joints during walking. Pain stops when you stop walking or moving and you may also have an abnormal growth in the knee joints. If the knee pain is caused due to osteoarthritis, Bryonia Alba can prove to be a useful remedy as well.

  2. RhusTox – If the knee pain comes with the symptoms of severe pain in damp weather, intense pain after initial movement which tends to gets better in continuous motion, a prescribed dosage of RhusTox might help in the elimination of the pain.

  3. Colchium – The medicine is useful in treating knee pain which worsens due to movement and subsequently improves in warm weather or after getting appropriate rest.

  4. Silicea – This preparation is useful in curing knee pain which retains the sensation of being tightly bound during all times.

  5. Lachesis – If the knee pain is caused due to rheumatoid arthritis, Lachesis can be an effective treatment. Lachesis can also be prescribed if the pain is accompanied with an abnormal growth around the affected area.

These are just a few of the commonly used Homeopathic remedies and are mentioned only to create awareness about the effectiveness of Homeopathic medicines for Knee Pain. It is not advisable to resort to self-medication for any disease.

I underwent an ACL operation on 8th December 2015. Then Physiotherapy for 2 months. I am still unable to run and sometimes I feel pain in the knee when I bend it completely or use stairs or do fast walking. I want to ask that after how much time, I could run or walk fastly or swim without pain. I am doing regular exercise of my knee for 15 mins like cardio, half Squats etc.

Lybrate-user ji you should not run after the surgery for acl. Do not bend your knee more than 90 degree. Do not use stairs as far as possible. You can walk fast. You should be able to swim without pain. And most imp thing you should reduce your weight by minimum 10 kg.

: keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Hi I am 28 year overweight female Bmi = 26. Met with an accident 2 years back which left me with my right knee medial meniscal tear and acl sprain. I am doing basic knee quads hams ex daily. But there is alwz 2-3/10 pain. Which worsens in winter. What more I can do for my knee conservatively. Is surgery or arthroscopy good option at this age. Please tell me because I am trying hard to keep my knee better.

26 bmi is alright. Clinical examination is necessary and evaluation of tear on mri films will give good insight to your problem. If pain is not improving since 2 years, it will be better to get it solved by arthroscopy. Arthroscopy surgery will be best for you if doctor feels you need surgery. Age is not a problem. You are very young, must get your problem settled.
