Skin Darkening: Types, Causes & Prevention

Have you been noticing that some parts of your skin have turned dark and dull recently? Do you have ugly blotches and spots developing on your skin that keep on worsening? These may indicate that you have been affected by a medical condition known as skin darkening. Also known as hyperpigmentation, it is commonly caused by the overproduction of a pigment known as melanin. Although skin darkening is not a harmful condition, it demoralizes an affected person.

Types of Hyperpigmentation:

There are several types of hyperpigmentation or skin darkening. They are:

  1. Lentigenes: This type of skin darkening refers to on the dark brown or black marks on skin surface.

  2. Solar Lentigenes: This type of skin darkening includes sun spots, age spots or liver spots. These are spots, which are caused due to exposure to the sun.

  3. Melasma: This type of skin darkening, also called as mask of pregnancy, occurs due to hormonal changes of pregnancy. Some areas of the facial skin become blotchy and pigmented.

Causes of Skin darkening:

There are several conditions, which may lead to the occurrence of skin darkening or hyperpigmentation. They include the following:

  1. Hereditary factors: Some inherited factors present since birth may be responsible for the change in the skin complexion and the development of patches.

  2. Skin disorders: Several skin disorders may cause the darkening of the skin, resulting into the formation of blotches and the skin becoming thicker.

  3. Vitamin deficiency: Insufficient consumption of essential vitamins such as vitamin A, E, C and B complex may result in darkening and roughening of the skin. Vitamin deprivation also makes the skin look dull. Liver disorders: Certain liver disorders are also responsible for hyperpigmentation. A dysfunctional liver may lead to darkening of the skin.

  4. Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes within our body and during pregnancy in women may also cause skin darkening.

  5. Exposure to UV rays: Overexposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun may lead to skin tanning. This causes overproduction of melanin, which in turn results in skin darkening.

Prevention:

There are several ways in which you can prevent skin darkening. They include the following:

  1. Avoid exposing yourself directly to the rays of the sun.

  2. Try to apply sunscreen every time before you go out in the sun.

  3. You should drink plenty of water and always keep yourself hydrated.

  4. Try to abstain from consuming too much of spicy, oily and rich foods.

  5. You must intake a lot of fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamin A, B, C, and E.

There are many options for treating the hyperpigmentation, from skin lightening peels to lasers. A properly planned customized skin care routine and treatment options can minimize, the pigmentation on your skin dramatically.

Hi!

I am Dr. Deepa Kanchankoti practicing dermatologist in Mumbai today I’m going to speak on moisturization the skin should be kept soft, supple and glowing all the time. The normal pH of skin is acidic close to 5.5 when we use soaps and detergents the pH rises an become alkaline by using cynded baar or soaps with pH 5.5 we reduce the dryness and if you can apply within 3 min of bath or washing a moisturizing agent the skin is always kept soft n supple we can say that for a new born alot of care is taken in term of moisturization but as the person grows they stop using mousturizing agents. One should use load of moisturizing agent immediately after bath in case of face if the skin is very oily then one should a light moistening agent if the skin is dry then one should use heavy moisturizing agent the moisturizer content varies from season to season as in winters the frequency and the thickness of moisturizing agent becomes more in case of winters once the person becomes old the oil glands which normally produce lot of oil and keeps the Barriers Function on Also reduces this leads to lots of dryness leading to flacking and scratching. Once the scratching is to much it leads to bleeding an all this can be presented simply by applying repeatedly moisturizing agent all over hand and feet. The same thing happen in case of certain disease condition as psoriasis, eczema, or atopic dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis. if we can maintain the barrier function that reduces transepidermal water loss an cracking in the skin is prevented an use of medicine is reduced. On face a lot of people who are surfing from acnuue think that because is producing a lot of oil that is no need for them to use moisturizing agent where that is not correct by using a light moisturizing agent alot of skin medication which are used in acne which causes dryness can b prevented the same happens in case of photo aging or pigmentation on face any skin which well hydrated, well moisturized is less prone to the damage from the ultra violet rays and if you don’t want wrinkle early then you should start using a moisturizing agent early.

Should I take primosa 1000 for my skin In a natural ways. please give your valuable suggestion?
Hello. Do you want to take this for Acne? Or some other problem? As there are few contraindications of Primosa 1000 like - Pregnancy, breast-feeding, seizures or epilepsy, schizophrenia, surgery, bleeding disorders, etc. - where it has to be avoided. So, for proper guidance, you should consult an Allopathic physician. I would recommend you homoeopathic medicine for your Acne - Take Berberis Aquefolium Q/ 10 drops in 1/2 cup of water/ thrice a day; the same medicine is to be applied on the acne as well with the help of cotton swab twice.

Is Damage Caused By the Makeup You Apply Killing Your Beauty?
What damage can regular make up cause to your skin

Constant use of makeup does have a telling effect on our skin. It is important to use makeup carefully according to your skin type. It is also important to remove all makeup before you hit the bed each night.

Few ways makeup can damage your skin are:

1. Makeup causes acne, nine out of ten times if not removed properly every night.

2. In some people, regular use of makeup also triggers reactions and allergies.

3. Regular use of makeup also leads to cancer and other chronic diseases.

4. Using low quality of makeup wrinkles the skin and you start looking much older than what you actually are.

Caution: if your skin is sensitive, always check with your dermatologist for any issues or advice before you buy and apply any beauty product.

If you would like to consult with me privately, please click on consult.

Before doing chemical peeling try the remedy for a month it will also help,.. Combine one teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice, one tablespoon of powdered milk, and one-half teaspoon of almond oil. Mix them well and apply it gently on the skin. Leave it on for 10 to15 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. Do this every other day
