Dear, low back pain are often referred for physical therapy for four weeks as an initial conservative (nonsurgical) treatment option before considering other more aggressive treatments, including back surgery. The goals of physical therapy are to decrease back pain, increase function, and teach the patient a maintenance program to prevent future back problems. Common forms of physical therapy include: 1.Passive physical therapy (modalities), which includes things done to the patient, such as heat application, ice packs and electrical stimulation. For example, a heating pad may be applied to warm up the muscles prior to doing exercising and stretching, and an ice pack may be used afterward to sooth the muscles and soft tissues. OSee Physical Therapy: Passive PT (Modalities) for Back Pain 2.Active physical therapy, which focuses on specific exercises and stretching. For most low back pain treatments, active exercise is the focus of the physical therapy program. This article focuses on active physical therapy and exercise as a means to help recover from back problems and prevent or minimize future flare-ups of low back pain Low back pain has lasted between two and six weeks, or if there are frequent recurrences of low back pain, physical therapy is often recommended. Some spine specialists consider physical therapy sooner, particularly if the pain is severe. •Read more: Exercise and Back Pain In general, the goals of physical therapy are to decrease pain, increase function, and provide education on a maintenance program to prevent further recurrences. A physical therapy program for back pain usually has two components: 1.Passive physical therapy to help reduce the patient's pain to a more manageable level 2.Active exercises Passive Physical Therapy - Modalities Acutely, the physical therapist may focus on decreasing pain with passive physical therapy (modalities). These therapies are considered passive because they are done to the patient. Examples of modalities include: •Heat/ice packs •TENS units •Iontophoresis •Ultrasound.

Dear , Simple cortical cyst with calcification is no trouble. It does not damage kidney and is to be left alone or at the most to be kept under supervision as your urologist has suggested. However i would like to point out that if you have preserved the stone fragments then get its chemical analysis done so that one could know for sure what the stone is formed of from that the likely cause of the stone formation as it is formed because of some underlying cause which must be detected and treated so that recurrent formation of stone can be prevented. Good intake of ghee, rice, and High calorie-contained food will increase the weight in women. Cheese items, boiled items, oil content foods, pizzas, and burgers will play a major role in increasing the weight in greater extent. 1. First thing to do to gain weight is eating the right amount of food each day. Take about 20 times of your body weight in calories every day. It is better to plan your meals daily as you know what and when to eat – and you don’t have to just go have it for the sake of filling your stomach. 2. Keep checking your weight daily. Multiply your body weight into 20 and that is the amount of calorie that you must eat on a daily basis. So if you weigh 120 pounds and multiply it by 20, you’ll have to eat 2, 400 calories everyday to gain weight fast. 3. The intake of calorie is not necessarily be exactly 20 times of your body weight but for optimum results it would be the best measurement to start with. If you can add additional calories if you aren’t finding any gain in your weight. 4. Next, pay attention to the type of food that you eat. You will end up just putting on weight instead of healthy muscles if you keep eating junk foods. In order to get muscle weight, eat healthy food, such as meat, carbohydrate rich food and healthy fat. Have an approximate calculation of this combination in your daily diet – carbohydrate 40%, protein 30%, and fat 30% this would be an ideal combination of healthy diet. 5. If your body needs to receive regular stream of nutrients, you need to change to frequent or smaller number of regular meals (for example 4 to 6 smaller meals) daily instead of big 3 meals as usual. This way it will be easier to build muscles weight.

Suffering from PCOD? What Diet Should You Follow?

Suffering from PCOD? What Diet Should You Follow?

Polycystic ovary disease or PCOD is a variant of hormonal disorder which is known to affect 1 out of 10 women. PCOD is a condition in which a woman has numerous small cysts in the ovaries. It can lead to unregulated hormonal cycle and may also trigger high blood pressure, diabetes, acne, infertility and growth of hair on the cheek, chin and chest.

How may PCOD be helped with diet?
Though there is no way to reverse the effects of PCOD, it can be managed with adequate exercise and well-regulated diet. So, if you are disturbed by the effects of PCOD, you can try these tips to help your situation.
Eat more fruits and vegetables: Many health experts are of the opinion that fruits and vegetables can eliminate toxins from the body. You should also avoid dairy-based products as they can trigger insulin levels aggravating acne and other skin problems.

  1. Eat lean meat but stay away from red meat: In 2013, a study reported that consuming red meat can increase the risk of infertility and therefore, you must try to avoid it. You must also limit the consumption of sugary foods and drinks.
  2. Stay away from saturated and hydrogenated fats: Saturated fats are available naturally in some foods such as pork, lamb, beef, cheese etc. and they can cause a hike in your cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It is therefore suggested to check the labels of food products to make sure that the baked foods you are consuming are free from saturated and hydrogenated fats.
  3. Pick a food with low glycemic index: Women who are suffering from PCOD suffer from insulin resistance and as a result, should consume the foods that are meant for diabetics. So your foods should be rich in fibre content with a limited amount of carbohydrates and processed foods. Foods made of whole wheat and whole grain should be avoided. You can eat brown rice, wheat pasta and poha made of brown rice.
  4. Drink lots of water: Women suffering from PCOD can experience water retention. So, you should eat small and frequent meals along with a lot of water all through the day.

Besides following all these tips, it is crucial to workout for about 30 to 60 minutes in a day for reducing your insulin resistance, which may make you overweight and even obese. This, in turn, would cause irregularity of hormonal levels and host a lot of other problems.

I ave a serious problem about nose. Bleeding happen continuously. Within 5-7 days. What is d solution for this?

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Delhi
Bleeding from nose happens either due to dryness and crusting in the nose or maybe due to other illnesses with medical problem. Generally people of your age have a habit of excessively cleaning their noses with finger or tissue, this leads to erosion of the crust or fine lining of the nose and thus bleeding. If this is the case, then please keep your nose lubricated with some vaseline, cream etc and do not manipulate your nose. If this is not the case, you need to see an ent consult.

My wife diagnosed with lichen planus. She is being medicated for various skin specialist but there is not any relief yet. In summer lot of skin itching takes place in leg and under arm. There is now mark for itching. Pl suggest permanent solution.

MBBS, Diploma in Cardiac Emergencies in General Practice
General Physician,
My wife diagnosed with lichen planus. She is being medicated for various skin specialist but there is not any relief ...
There is no quick cure for lichen planus. However, it is likely to clear in time. Treatment aims to relieve itching and improve the appearance of the rash until it goes away. No treatment - is an option if symptoms are mild. Antihistamine medicines - may help to ease the itch. An antihistamine that makes you sleepy, taken at bedtime, may help you to sleep if the itch keeps you awake at night. Emollients - are often also given to provide moisture to your skin. These can also help to reduce the itching. A steroid cream or ointment - is commonly advised. Steroids reduce inflammation. The effect of steroid creams and ointments is variable. They work in many cases to ease itch but may not actually clear the rash. Steroid pastes or mouth washes - may help to ease painful mouth ulcers. A course of steroid tablets - may be advised if lichen planus is severe. This may clear, or greatly reduce, the rash. Steroid tablets taken for longer than a few weeks are not usually advised due to possible side-effects. Therefore, the rash may reappear after the tablets are stopped. However, a course of steroid tablets may help to tide you over a particularly bad spell. Immune modulators - such as imiquimod and levamisole may be advised by a specialist if lichen planus is severe. These work with the body's immune system to help fight damage to the skin. Skin irritation, headache, nausea and tiredness can be side-effects. Puva - this is a special light therapy that may be advised by a skin specialist if you have extensive and severe lichen plants. Laser treatment - low-dose lasers are sometimes used to treat lichen planus in the mouth. In general outlook is good as it is most of the times self limiting and goes away with time in around 6 months to 2 years.
