Her Recent test of hemoglobin is 7.9. She is also a sugar patient. What should she do now for her btr treatment.

Her Recent test of hemoglobin is 7.9. She is also a sugar patient. What should she do now for her btr treatment.
Mr. Lybrate-user, with hemoglobin 7.9 g/100 ml, her anemia is quite severe. This needs to be urgently corrected. If she also has t2 dm, then controlling sugar levels near to normal is equally important. Both these need specific treatment. For anemia improvement, her diet has to be healthy - plenty of green leafy vegetables, salads, organ meats, eggs, fishes and milk products like cheese etc. Please let me know the weight mentioned above (81 kg) is it belonging to the patient? because that shows the person is close to have grade 1 obesity. If that is the case then dietary approach has to change. Blood sugars should be fasting closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg and hba1c%<6.8, these levels should be achieved to keep diabetes in control. Apart from healthy diet, necessary drugs, exercise for 1 hour is also required.

Hello- PE (Premature ejaculation) is sometimes confused with ED (erectile dysfunction), but they're very different. ED is a condition where a man cannot achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Ejaculation is considered premature if it occurs before both partners are satisfied, that is before 10 minutes.

Sir/mam I have curve hair. I want to be straight hair can it solve my hair problem.

Sir/mam I have curve hair. I want to be straight hair can it solve my hair problem.
1. Slightly heat the oil you wish to use in a microwave for about 20 seconds. 2. Apply the warm oil to your hair and massage your scalp for 15 to 20 minutes. 3. Comb your hair thoroughly to evenly distribute the oil. It will also avoid breakage while washing your hair. 4. Cover your hair with a hot wet towel for 30 to 40 minutes. 5. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. 6. Gently comb your hair (use a wide-toothed comb not a brush) while it is still wet and allow it to air dry.

I have a obstructive sleep apnea problem and have been using CPAP machine for last 3 years. How can I sleep without CPAP machine and what should I do for the same? I tried to sleep without CPAP machine but I awake frequently at night and feeling sleepy all day.

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
The best treatment available to manage obstructive sleep apnea (osa) is cpap. You are using it for 3 years now, itself is an indication that you feel benefit by using it, so why do you want to leave it and try other therapies, which are usually not very effective for osa. Not taking treatment for osa for a long time can have detrimental effects on health. I suggest you keep using your cpap machine, and also get evaluated periodically with your sleep specialist for seeing the latest situation of your condition and pressure changes that may be required if any.

Blood In Urine - Is It Actually Serious?

Blood In Urine - Is It Actually Serious?

Most people would panic on seeing slightly red urine being passed. A common urologic condition, this happens because blood cells are leaking into the urine. There are multiple reasons which can cause it, and not all of them are major causes for concern.

Read on to know more about some common causes, and how to manage this.

  1. Urinary tract infections: There could be an infection of the entire urinary tract including the kidneys, the ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. In addition to blood in the urine, there could also be an urge to urinate, pain with urination, fever, and flank pain.
  2. Enlarged or infected prostate: The prostate naturally enlarges with age and can obstruct the urethra, causing pain and blood in the urine. There is a constant urge to urinate and difficulty initiating the stream. Infection of the prostate also produces similar symptoms along with fever and pain.
  3. Kidney diseases: In addition to infections, other kidney diseases including glomerulonephritis, which can also lead to hematuria. Kidney stones, which are quite common, are also another reason, and this will be characterised by the sudden sharp pain around the flank which is very diagnostic of kidney stones. Injury to the kidneys from trauma or sports is another reason for hematuria.
  4. Cancers/tumours: Cancers in the kidney, bladder, or prostate can cause blood to appear in the urine, but this would happen once cancer has reached some advanced stage, not very early in the process.

Listed below are some risk factors for hematuria.

  1. Age: Men older than 50 are more prone to hematuria
  2. Sex: While men are more likely to have stones or prostate infections, UTIs are quite common in women below 50s.
  3. Family history: though not hereditary, if kidney stones or cancers or infections are in the family, chances of developing hematuria also goes up.
  4. Medications: Aspirin, blood thinners, NSAIDs, and some antibiotics increase the chances of hematuria.
  5. Exercise: Long distance runners are shown to be more prone to developing hematuria.

Diagnosis: In addition to a physical exam, blood tests, imaging (CT scans and/or MRI) and cystoscopy might be required to confirm the diagnosis. Identifying the cause is extremely important as treatment would depend completely on the causative agent. Though hematuria is just one of the symptom, the underlying cause could have severe adverse effects on the whole body system.

Treatment: Whether it is an infection or enlarged prostate or kidney stone or tumour, once the cause is identified treatment is customised accordingly. Antibiotics for the infections, laser treatment for the stones, etc. are recommended.

If you see your urine turning slightly pink in colour, talk to your doctor immediately. Identifying the underlying cause and treating it will help solve the problem of hematuria.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

My mother is suffering from varicose vein problem from the past few years and had done treatment in Ayurveda as well as in homeopathy, which results in recovery for a short period of time and later again back to the same stage. In her legs the veins are a little bulged and will get swollen with intense pain which finally results in a wound from which a watery kind of pus is coming. The wound is very difficult to cure which takes too many days with severe pain. It is affected on the small veins and tissues. So I request you to suggest the treatment for this type of varicose problem or from where we will get the treatment for this. Awaiting for your soon reply.

DNB (Radio Diagnosis), MBBS
Radiologist, Hyderabad
Hello, It is unfortunate that you have not had good results in treatment of your mothers varicose veins. The latest treatment is endovenous laser ablation, which is now accepted as gold standard. In any case doppler examination of the veins is a must before varicose veins can be diagnosed. If you have please gat back to me with the results and we can have a consultation.
