Common Factors that Cause Dandruff

MD, MBBS
Dermatologist, Gurgaon
Common Factors that Cause Dandruff

Dandruff isn't just a social embarrassment, but may also give you certain pointers about your general hair health as well. Let's look at some facts regarding dandruff and how it may affect the health of your hair.
Causes of dandruff

The cause for dandruff is usually stated to be a dry scalp, which is not entirely true. Dandruff could be caused by a host of reasons and rather than being a problem, it could be a symptom of other problems with hair health. Let's look at some of the causes:

  1. Yeast problems on your scalp: If you suffer from extreme dandruff problems during the winter months, it is likely that it is due to the buildup of yeast on your head. Yeast may build up during the winter months and it usually gets resolved when temperatures rise during the summer months.
  2. Not maintaining your hair regularly: This may come as a surprising element as brushing helps in removing dandruff from your scalp. If you have short hair and don't brush your hair regularly, chances of getting dandruff increase more so. Shampooing also has a similar effect and thus if you don't keep your hair clean, it might end up causing more dandruff.
  3. Conditions such as Seborrheic dermatitis or other diseases: Dandruff may well be a manifestation of symptoms for other health problems within your body. For example, Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition which may cause your scalp to be irritated and oily and in turn, cause more dandruff. It could also mean you have a Malassezia problem. Malassezia is a fungus that naturally lives in our hair and feeds on the oil, but an overgrowth of these might result in dandruff as well.
  4. Lifestyle issues such as diet and stress: If you follow a poor diet, mostly consisting of junk and fried foods, and also have a lot of stress, then it may lead to dandruff. In such cases, topical medications or treatments might not work. You will need to correct it by making changes in your lifestyle, one of them following a healthy diet

In all of these cases, it is not just a specific problem, but a symptom of a larger problem that needs to be resolved. Treating the underlying problems will ensure that dandruff goes away too.

Hi. Night blindness is a condition that makes it difficult to see in low light. The human eye got a very sophisticated system which can function from very dark to very bright light. But in the case of night blindness, the eyes fails to adapt to darkness. Night blindness can be an early sign of vitamin A deficiency, often the result of a diet lacking in vegetables containing beta-carotene, which the body can make into vitamin A. A lack of zinc can reduce retinol dehydrogenase, an enzyme needed to help vitamin A work in the eye. Zinc helps night blindness in those who are zinc-deficient. Most people don’t get enough zinc in their diets. Vitamin A is found naturally in many foods: cod liver oil, liver, sweet potato, carrot, broccoli, butter, kale, spinach, pumpkin, Cheddar cheese, egg, apricot, papaya, mango, pea, milk, tomatoes, seaweed.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
As u already had menses so u r not pregnant and u dont need any investigations. U did the right thing by using i-pill. If u r likely to have repeated intercourse, it is better to use oral contraceptive pill instead of i-pill. E.G. E.G. Triquilar or ovral-L to be started on D2 of menstrual cycle and continue for 21 days. Then repeat the same thing once she gets menses

Dr. Has suggested me electro convelsiv therapy for depression and ocd. So I am worrying that memory loss should not happen permanently. Does ECT causes permanent memory loss.

M.Sc Applied Psychology, Advanced Diploma Child Guidance & Counselling

Dear Lybrate User I would suggest to take a second opinion from a Clinical Psychologist as we have other very effective therapies to treat depression and OCD. There are therapies like CBT cognitive behaviour therapy, exposure technique, guided imagery, yoga & meditation, acupuncture, biofeedback, aroma therapy, homeopathy etc. ECT should be used with caution. Take Care.

It is essential to have tsh values in the of 2 to 3 milli units/l, for conception, development of fetus and normal outcome of pregnancy. So give a look at tsh level. Thanks.

I am feeling irritation with light. I think I have photofobia. My eyes are feeling irritation. Give some advice to cure the same.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
I am feeling irritation with light. I think I have photofobia. My eyes are feeling irritation. Give some advice to cu...
To cure this problem you require to know the cause of photophobia----------- 1. People with a lighter eye color may experience more light sensitivity in environments such as bright sunlight, because darker-colored eyes contain more pigment to protect against harsh lighting. 2. Certain eye problemss like corneal abrasion, uveitis and a central nervous system disorder such as meningitis can cause photophobia. 3. Light sensitivity also is associated with a detached retina, contact lens irritations, sunburn and refractive surgery. 4. Photophobia often accompanies albinism (lack of eye pigment), total color deficiency (seeing only in shades of gray), botulism, rabies, mercury poisoning, conjunctivitis, keratitis and iritis. 5. Certain rare diseases, such as the genetic disorder keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (kfsd), are reported to cause photophobia. 6. Some medications may cause light sensitivity as a side effect, including belladonna, furosemide, quinine, tetracycline and doxycycline. Treatment 1. The best treatment for light sensitivity is to treat the underlying cause as described above. Once the triggering factor is treated, photophobia disappears in many cases. 2. If you are taking a medication that causes light sensitivity, talk to your doctor about discontinuing or replacing the drug. 3. If you're naturally sensitive to light, avoid bright sunlight and other harsh lighting sources. Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with ultraviolet (uv) protection. 4. Photochromic lenses are another solution for mild sun sensitivity. These lenses darken automatically outdoors and block 100 percent of the sun's uv rays. 5. For bright sunlight, consider polarized sunglasses. These sun lenses provide extra protection against glare-causing reflections of light from water, sand, snow, concrete roadways and other reflective surfaces. 6. In an extreme case, you may consider wearing prosthetic contact lenses that are specially colored to look like your own eyes. Prosthetic contact lenses can reduce the amount of light that enters theeye and make your eyes more comfortable.

How serious is Prostrate, what is the stage of must surgery, is there any chance of curing by medicine ?

MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Delhi
First of all there is no definite cure for prostatic enlargement as this gland keeps on increasing in size under influence of male hormones. Medicines can halt the progression of size but once you stop medication, the growth of the gland recurs. Similarly surgery can only remove the excessive gland tissue present at that particular time, It won't stop the gland from further growth. So your decision to undergo surgery depends upon control of symptoms by drugs. If the difficulty in urination is relieved by medicines then you don't require surgery. If your problem exists despite medicines then you have to go under the knife.
