Your Hypothyroidism is being controlled by Extroxin medicine, hence the weight gain can't be attributed to thyroid problem. Even if thyroid effects it has only about 3-5 percent effect. You need a complete lifestyle and diet counselling. Please consult any dietician in your city and take help to resolve your weight / lifestyle problem. I am writing some general tips which you can follow for better health and lesser weight. >> Add more Fruits /Salads/Proteins to your diet. Double your water intake. One glass every hour..>> Cut down Sweets/Biscuits/ Colas/Juices from your diet..>> Cut down Puris/Parathas/Pizzas/Burgers/Fried Rice..>> Eat slowly and mindfully. Reduce portion size..>> Exercise daily - 'Intense' Cardio for 40-60 mins. This will keep you toned and trim..>> Reduce outside food. Only once a week its permitted..>> Love yourself and respect your body.

For diabetes patients, which is good to have as dinner among white rice and wheat upma? Thanks.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

For diabetes patients, which is good to have as dinner among white rice and wheat upma? Thanks.
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. For a person having well controlled diabetes, taking wheat upma or white rice does not make any difference. Because both contain a lot of carbohydrates. What is required is taking a balanced diet that meets exact caloric needs of the person based on his/ her ideal body weight, blood glucose levels and extent of daily physical exercise. Without knowing actual details like fasting, PP blood glucose levels, HbA1c%, height, weight, present diet and extent of daily exercise, it is difficult to give any fruitful advise. Thanks.

My husband is suffering from high uric acid levels in blood how to overcome this problem what diet has to be taken what are the precautions to take to reduce these levels please tell.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
A high uric acid level can be caused when your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid rapidly enough. A high uric acid level may cause increasingly frequent attacks of gout, or it may never cause problems. A high uric acid level may also cause some people to develop kidney stones or kidney failure. And some people with a high uric acid level also develop high blood pressure, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, but it's often unclear whether this is a direct cause or merely an early warning sign of these conditions. Factors that may cause a high uric acid level in your blood include: Diuretic medications (water pills),Drinking too much alcohol,Genetics (inherited tendencies),hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid),Immune-suppressing drugs,Niacin, or vitamin B-3, obesity, psoriasis, Purine-rich diet — organ meat, game meat, anchovies, herring, gravy, dried beans, driedpeas, mushrooms and other foods Renal insufficiency — inability of the kidneys to filter waste Tumor lysis syndrome — a rapid release of cells into the blood caused by certain cancers or by chemotherapy for those cancers,Also, you may be monitored for high uric acid levels when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. Avoid protein diets, avoid more milk products. bad habits , fast food/fat/oily,salty foods. Coffee, smoking, alcohol intake. Non-veg., take whole grain, oats, green veg.,plenty of water in day time, 1 glass of water at night before bed. Take tab. Zyloric 100 mg once a day. Tab. Ulracet sos for pain in joints.

Himaniji, TSH levels increase if the dose of thyroxine given is inadequate. Your starting treatment itself should have been higher. Since the dose was reduced from 50 mcg to 37.5 mcg, which was definitely inadequate, causing the rise in TSH levels. Inspite of taking medication regularly TSH level will not come down on the contrary it will go up, as has happened in your case. On treatment for achieving control TSH level should come between 3 to 4 mU/L. Thanks.

Hi my uncle is suffering from diabetes and he is not feeling the sensation in his toes. Can you please help in this case, is there any way he could be able to gain his sensation back?

Hi my uncle is suffering from diabetes and he is not feeling the sensation in his toes. Can you please help in this ...
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. If diabetes is present for many years, plus not in good control, then chances of developing peripheral neuropathy early and severe are very high. Even when it is well controlled, there is certain amount of damage that occurs to the peripheral nerves. So first and fore most is to see that he achieves a very stric blood glucose control with fasting <100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HBA1c%<6.8. But even with this the damage already done is unlikely to be reversed. There are certain medications which can help in reducing pain. Another aspect is the blood supply to the limb also may be affected. That needs to be checked. Thanks.

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a condition caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body inappropriately attacks the thyroid gland - as if it was foreign tissue. The underlying cause of the autoimmune process remains unknown. Hashimoto's thyroiditis tends to occur in families. It can be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is 5 to 10 times more common in women than in men and most often starts in adulthood. Blood drawn from people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis typically reveals an increased number of antibodies against thyroid-specific proteins, including thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin. T- lymphocytes, a type of cell involved in the inflammation process, invade the thyroid gland cause silent, painless inflammation that destroys it; ultimately, the individual produces little or no thyroid hormone and becomes hypothyroid.----------------During the early stage of thyroiditis, the levels of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) may be normal. With chronic hypothyroidism, the thyroid hormone levels fall, and the level of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) becomes high. The most useful assay for determining thyroid status is measurement of TSH in the blood. As mentioned earlier, TSH is secreted by the pituitary gland. As the level of thyroid hormone falls, the pituitary gland responds by releasing more thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The increase in TSH can actually precede the fall of thyroid hormone to low levels by months or years, so the first sign of hypothyroidism may be an elevated TSH level even when levels of thyroid hormones are normal. ---------------------•The treatment of choice for Hashimoto's thyroiditis is typically synthetic T4 or thyroxine (levothyroxine) along with homoeopathic medicine THYROIDINUM- 3X (Schwabe Gernam) by chewing 2 tabs twice daily so as to keep the dosage of Levothyroxine under check. The medication must be taken indefinitely, and successful treatment alleviates the symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism. Without medication, there is very little chance the thyroid would be able to maintain hormone levels within the normal range, and symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism would occur or worsen.--------------------------NowayIodine will make the things worse in erson having HT as Iodine intake increaes the TSH levels whereas HT presents itself with Hypothyroidism where the levels of TSH are already high--------
