Hey doctor I just wanted to confirm I have a habit of smoking in starting I smoke 1 or 2 cigarette but now it will converted into 4-5 or sometime more than that. From few day I have pain in neck (throat) its not paining too much but I feel the pain and it disturbing me. Whenever I want to take out cough but its not coming some time something black is coming. I am smoking for last eight years. Help me out.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You must visit a doctor and determine the nature of this pain. Any which way, you must quit smoking for your own sake and health. You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact, these conditions can exist all through the day, unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heartbeat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact, it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chew gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i. E. At least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. You could also join twitter2quit program and enjoy its success to give up smoking.

You have enough on your plate with bipolar disorder to worry about your lack of height! Seriously, this disease can be quite crippling by itself and if you add something like OCD to it, you are really going to suffer. You just cannot improve your height at this age and it si a reality you must learn to accept and live with. Nothing is as important as your life, which I think is good, that you do everything to protect it and live life to the fullest. I suppose that your big concern will be about meeting the right girl and getting married, and perhaps you are concerned that that may not happen. If you see married couples you will notice that many of them make really bad bedfellows, if you went purely by appearance. Appearances are deceptive and are never the criteria to determine a future spouse. There are so many other features to consider. So be patient and develop your personality to make yourself a very attractive prospect. Your education, personality, character, charm, respectfulness, and maturity matters a lot, never your height.

I want to know about mental disease, last many days I am in depression so I don't understand how to behave or react w...
Hi lybrate-user, mental diseases as you term it is (are of various types from mild to severe} how you feel, behave or perceive things or beings around you, caused due to emotional imbalance due to incidental, emotional, or changes internally. The problem you have is due to emotional distress caused by some incident, which you have not mentioned. Depressive individuals do behave abnormally to others, it happens but as days go on they become normal. It is like a season that comes and then goes, you have got to give some time for your depression to get healed naturally and through other ways may be diverting your mind or concentrating on something else which you are more interested like your good habits like playing, music, game or any other hobby should be more addictive to these, the only way to come out from depression. I suggest you to become more occupied in any one of your good hobbies, eat what you like the most, sleep well and if you can attend mind relaxation yoga classes. Definitely you can come out of depression and become more jovial. Try to follow step by step slowly and then let me know or call if in case you have any trouble or doubts regarding the same. Best wishes psy. Msv.

Whenever you will stop eating gukta first 72 hrs you may experience some amount of physical & psychological discomfort; to avoid that ask your psychiatrist to help you. Plan for psychotherapy sessions with a psychologist which will equip you with various techniques like: craving management, decision making, identifying triggers & lastly to design the relapse prevention plan. Medicine & counselling will help you to come out of this problem. Practice 'One Day At Time' Good Luck.

Please take your wife to meet with a psychiatrist, immediately. She should also work with a counselor simultaneously to ideally deal with her problem. This may involve long term treatment and it needs for her to cooperate with both therapies. You will be very important to facilitate her recovery and you must also attend some sessions to identify your role in the process. This is a serious condition and any neglect will only worsen the situation. Please act early and ensure that everyone at home helps her in the recovery process too.

Hi you are not a psycho. I advice you refrain from sex before marriage. Most of the girls or ladies have sex only after marriage. Think positively. Your headache is because you want sex. Try to change your bent of mind. There is no need of frustration. Remember all controls are in the mind. It is only youself who can help yourself in this situation. You need no medicine.

I am male, 35. Off late I am loosing my power to focus on things. I used to be an avid reader and had a good academic and professional record. But nowadays I can hardly concentrate and read any written material for more than 10 mins.

You are probably under some form of stress. Look back and see what is causing the stress and for how long. Once you deal with the stress, the focus and memory will happily return. There may be some pressure if you are looking too much into the future too: that is another form of stress that needs to be dealt with soon. Meet with a counselor and check out your emotions to make sure you are not suppressing them. In the meantime please do regular and vigorous exercise, yoga and meditation, get at least 8 hours of sleep every day, and eat a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. I hope there are no strains in the domestic scene and with the people in the house. Attend some spiritual courses to accept life as it is and to learn to live calmly and in a relaxed manner.

You can eat raw carrots at any time for maximum benefits. These foods are also good for your brain: MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: •Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week •Other vegetables: At least one a day •Nuts: Five servings a week •Berries: Two or more servings a week •Beans: At least three servings a week •Whole grains: Three or more servings a day •Fish: Once a week •Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week •Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. •Wine: One glass a day You avoid: •Red meat: Less than four servings a week •Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily •Cheese: Less than one serving a week •Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week •Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week For your sleep problem, it looks like you are under some stress and you can follow the suggestions given below: In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i.e. Breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep. Meet a counselor if these techniques do not give you the desired result.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. Take care.

What can I do my husband is get doubt for me. He says my affair with other man but its not true. Please advise.

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
There could be many reasons for him to doubt you. He might be prone to doubting people generally. Or he wants you to be within his control and this would be a good way to do that. Or some person has said something to him and he believes it. Whatever the reasons are, it would be impacting your married life as well as peace of mind. It would be important to go for marital counselling to clear out the air between the two of you. Sometimes other issues are also linked to doubting behaviour, like poor self esteem, feeling uncared for, suspicious nature etc. Counselling will help you both to voice such other aspects of hidden nature and improve the quality of communication between you two.

It's sad to know that you have someone that is near to you. But one has to become strong to fulfil other responsibilities. To relieve your depression, you must take some strong and positive steps. Like taking a walk in morning or evening for at least 30 minutes. Drink water and natural juices and buttermilk ice tea for 4-5 times a day. Eat fruits and vegetables more. You can take homoeopathic medicines like natrum mur 1m wkly once. Keep in touch.
