Epilepsy - Why You Must Consult?

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS

Epilepsy - Why You Must Consult?

Epilepsy is a form of chronic disorder and it is characterized by recurrent seizures. The episodes of epileptic seizures may differ from person to person. There are various causes of seizures inclusing genetic disorder, trauma or stroke, etc. During a seizure, a patient may also experience symptoms of neurological disorders and sometimes lose consciousness.

Medical help for epilepsy
Epilepsy itself cannot be cured using medication, but proper medicines help in eliminating recurrent seizures. These medicines stabilize the electrical activity within the brain preventing seizures.

How effective is the medication for epilepsy?
The success of controlling seizures using medicines depends on the type and severity of the epilepsy. Medicines for epilepsy are usually very effective and may fully keep seizures under control. However, controlling seizures caused due to brain problems may be more difficult. Usually, epilepsy medicines can control seizures for a long period of time when they are taken regularly.

When is medical help needed?
The decision about when to start medicines for epilepsy is a tricky one. This is because a first seizure cannot confirm whether a person has an on-going epilepsy problem. A second seizure may occur after many years or may not happen at all. Prediction of seizures is also quite difficult.

The severity of seizures also indicates when to start medicines for treatment. In case a first seizure is quite severe, medication should be started at once.

All the pros and cons must be thought over before starting medications for the treatment of epilepsy. In most cases, medication is started after a second seizure occurs, twelve months within the first seizure. You should always consult a doctor to know when you need to start taking medicines to treat the condition.

For making the most out of the medicines to control seizures, you should follow certain steps:

  1. You must take medications exactly as your doctor has prescribed.
  2. Before switching to generic versions of your medicines or before taking other prescribed medicines, you must consult your doctor.
  3. You should never stop taking the medicines.
  4. In case you experience enhanced depression, mood swings and suicidal thoughts, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
  5. In case you have migraine, you should let your doctor know so that he can prescribe you anti-epileptic medicines, which also prevent migraines.

Medicines cannot treat the underlying cause of epilepsy, but these help in controlling seizures and this is the most common symptom of epilepsy. Medication should be started at a proper time and must be continued without stopping, unless advised so by the doctor.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Our baby is of 1 month 20 old, we have taken all the vaccines prescribed for 45days except PCV because it is costlier. Is pcv vaccine for the infants is compulsory?

Every vaccine is compulsory if it is providing protection to your child. This vaccine prevents child from 3 dreadful diseases like pneumonia; meningitis; otitis media and sepsis. If affortability is not the criteria you go for this vaccination either of the 2 vaccinations as my colleague has mentioned.

My 1 month daughter keeps crying due to some problem. I have observed that she has passed stool only once in a day which is smelly like sour milk and whenever she tries to pass gas, she face difficulty in passing it. It sounds like colic but I understand colicaid drops have not helped. Try lactase enzyme drops like neosmile drops 4- 5 drops in expressed breast milk (about 1 spoon) to be fed 15 minutes before feeding, then breastfeed as normal. Use 3- 4 times a day. Continue to burp the baby during every feed. Another important thing to observe us to completely empty feeding from one breast before changing to other breast. Partial feeding from each breast will cause colic and also baby will not get the goodness of fat filled hind milk which comes in the end. Throwing up milk could be normal if in small amounts. Some babies have gastric reflux and throw up a lot. Please consult pediatrician to confirm the same. They could prescribe rantac syrup if necessary and also can weigh the baby and assess.

Meet a pediatrician. Pain in abdomen might be due to simple gastritis, worms in GIT etc etc. Better to show to a pediatrician. If needed he may get a sonography done to rule out any major problem. If Temperature is >100 then consider it as fever. Doctor might advice for blood investigations if needed. Do not try to avoid a doctor. Meet one as soon as possible.

I have one kid he is 25 months old he was drinking only milk not eating food so please solve my problem.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS

Firstly if your child is bottle fed, immediately stop his bottle feeding. Give milk up to three times a day by glass. Give four semisolid meals in a day. In case he doesn't eat, do not give milk instead. Eat with him. This should gradually improve the situation.

How To Diagnose Asthma In Children, Before It Attacks?

How To Diagnose Asthma In Children, Before It Attacks?
How to diagnose asthma in children

Asthma in children under the age of 5 is a matter of concern. It is not a rare disease and early diagnosis is important. Common signs of asthma in children are:

1. Recurring bronchitis
2. Wheezing
3. Discomfort in the chest
4. Coughing
5. Trouble breathing

While some children have persistent yet mild symptoms, some children have severe attacks at times. Seasonal allergies and smoke make the symptoms worse.

What to notice?
While feeding an infant, if you notice that your child is facing shortness of breath, it might be a symptom of asthma. In a toddler, if your notice a decreased desire to run and play, or easy fatigue, then this could be a symptom of asthma. Asthma attacks for many children under the age of 5 are worsened when they catch cold or have any other respiratory infections. All these, if noticed should not be ignored and your child's pediatrician should be consulted.

The above mentioned symptoms were mild. Some children have it worse and the attacks can be life-threatening, needing immediate treatment. If your child is under the age of 5 and you see them doing one of the following, contact emergency services immediately:

1. Trouble in speaking because they have restricted breathing
2. When they are breathing in, the effort is so much that the abdomen is getting sucked in
3. Gasping for air.

Diagnosing asthma in a child can be tricky as symptoms like coughing, wheezing, etc can be for other conditions also. Once a child is a little older and if the symptoms persist, breathing and lung function tests are taken to gauge the situation.
