Problem with my leg is it is just not able to take a load on it. So while wailking, my walk goes left right. I am not able to walk striaght. Neurologist asked me to do mri. Result showed this is due to multiple sclerosis (m. S.) doctor said there is no cure for it. Just we can avoid it to spread it further. Apart from this I am facing weakness at times. Once after I have my meals I feel better. Also not able to stand for a longer period. I had also gone for a blood check which showed vitamin d3 is less than 8 where it has to me more than 30. How to Deal with Severe Epilepsy

FRCS - Neurosurgery(UK), M.Ch - Neuro Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Neurosurgeon, Ahmedabad
How to Deal with Severe Epilepsy

The word epilepsy brings to mind visions of people frothing at the mouth and rolling on the ground. However, epilepsy affects each patient in a different way. This can make it hard to recognize at times. In the more serious cases of epilepsy, an epileptic attack can make a patient injure himself or develop other life threatening conditions. In rare cases, epilepsy can even cause death. Thus it becomes imperative to understand how to deal with epilepsy.

Treatment options for epilepsy can be categorized as medication, surgical procedures and dietary changes.

Medication: Medication for epilepsy is prescribed on the basis of the symptoms presented and the type of epilepsy the patient is suffering from. In most cases, seizures can be controlled with a single type of medication, but in others, the doctor may need to prescribe a combination of medicines to control epilepsy. These forms of medication do have side effects and hence any reactions to the medication must be immediately brought to the doctor's notice. The dosage for epilepsy medication may need to be varied with time. An epileptic patient should never discontinue medication on their own.

Surgery: Depending on the type of seizures and the area of the brain affected, a doctor may advise surgery in cases of severe epilepsy. Surgery can help reduce the number of seizures experienced or completely stop them. Surgery to treat epilepsy is of many types. Some of the common procedures are:

  1. Surgery to remove tumor of any such conditions that may be triggering the epileptic attacks
  2. Surgery to remove a small section of the brain from where a seizure originates. This may also be referred to as a lobectomy.
  3. Multiple subpial transaction or a surgery that involves making a series of cuts in the brain to prevent the seizures from spreading to other parts of the brain.
  4. Surgery to sever the neural connections between the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
  5. Surgery to remove half the brain's cortex or outer layer

Dietary changes: A diet rich in fats and low in carbohydrates can help reduce seizures. This is known as a ketogenic diet and aims at making the body break down fats instead of carbohydrates. It can cause a buildup of uric acid in the body and thus should be practiced only under the guidance of a dietician. In cases where epileptic attacks are triggered by malnutrition and birth defects, taking vitamin supplements can help lower the frequency of seizures.

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user, first of all, pls calm down, this doesnot appear to be a serious problem. A lot of people experience numbness, redness and slight swelling on hands and arms while walking. This is because, while walking, most of the blood flow is diverted to legs. What you can do is that while walking, open and close your fists repeatedly. This will increase your blood flow. You may keep smileys balls in hand and squeeze them repeatedly. If this doesnot work, then you may get an ecg done, although, I doubt you will need it. So relax and keep walking. Thanks!

Hello lybrate user first of all I want to thank you that you analysed your body symptoms properly and decided to change the lifestyle. Truly speaking all the problems you are facing are because of unhealthy lifestyle. As well as you need detoxification of body that is panchakarm of body. I will explain this with one example if milk in the vessel is putrified simply throwing of milk and addiing new milk to that vessel will not solve issue. Because fresh milk may also gets putrified as it is in contact with dirty vessel. Likewise adoption of new lifestyle to toxified body will not solve the problem completely, you need to detox body with panchakarma.

Hi, sleep is very important in a day's cycle. Lack of proper sleep will effect our daily activities and make your feel tired or drowsy. As you have told the tab is making you sleep more, stop it as for now. Start your day afresh early morning at 6 am. Go for a walk. Do exercise and meditation. Don't think of your sleep problem. Continue with your days work. Don't get stressed much. Have dinner early. Do meditation and try to sleep. Even if you can't don't feel stressed, be positive. Again start your day at 6am. If you try this in a few days your sleep cycle ll come back. If it doesn't work den go for consultation n medication. All the best.

Dear Seshuk, Shivering may be due to anxiety, or due to thyroid problem or due to some drugs you use or smoking or other neurological causes. Please don't avoid taking selfie or other scary moments. If you continue, the fear and shivering will be reduced. However consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

MBBS,J.R. Neurology
General Physician,
Epilepsy is when you have more than one episode of unprovoked seizures. Be precise while using the term. If you are an epilepsy patient then you should probably visit a neurologist and follow the medications prescribed. And stay calm and stress free. Take care.
