My 7 years old labrador has been dull for the last 15 days, appetite normal, had blood in stool 2 days ago, blood test revealed low BUN at 7.24, elevated sgot at 69.63, elevated alkaline phosphatase at 107. Xrays and ultrasound revealed enlarged spleen. Stool test showed presence of pus cells, blood. He has had thyroid issue for the last 3 years for which we give him thyronorm 100 daily. What disease could he possibly have?

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
How are his platelets? bun could be low because of long term fasting or because of reduced generation by liver. In latter case, get him blood ammonia levels checked. Its a test to done immediately (within 1 hr latest) after the blood is drawn. I would not consider sgpo and alkaline phosphatase elevated at those levels, however laboratory standards are different everywhere. Discuss following things with your vet. 1) contribution of ammonia levels in dullness. 2) possible underdosing of thyroid hormone supplements. For which, you can sent his blood 4-6 hrs post tablet, to see if 100mcg dose is helping you to achieve normal blood levels. If not, you may need to increase dosing and make it twice daily, after discussing with your vet. Hope this is helpful.

MVSc (Ph.D)
Veterinarian,
Streat dog means uncared one & will have infection both microbial as ell as parasitic or even hepatitis, it is better to exam stools for worm infection, Assuming, the mixed infection, you may give, Antibacterial, antifungal & anthelmintics, After this, you give Live tonic, with B, Complex, oral feeding woth suplements. With Milk, Egg, Raagi gruel it will be allright. If Temp, is noiticed small amount of paracetamol say 50 mg will take care. Do this it will be allright.

Hi. 5 days before my dog died Without any symptoms. In my village nearly 30 dogs died within 10 days. Can you please tell what may be the reason.

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian, Secunderabad
Hi, the reason may be silent form of rabies. If one dog effected, the other dogs also may be effected. Or if any food poisoning at the same place. Check once. Or take one to nearest vet for proper diagnosis.

Can you elaborate how are symptoms of breathing problem. Also share what is the breed and does his/ her breather rate increase v high after exercise or at night or any particular time of day. Is would be better if you can share video clip while showing signs of breathing problem.

Normally if your pet dog is vaccinated, then no need to for vaccination. You have to make sure your pet dog is vaccinated in last one year.

I need a pet doctor because my 3 month old pet dog is vomiting and suffered from fever. Please help.

MVSc
Veterinarian, Darjeeling
You did not mention the deworming and vaccination status of your pet. There may be different reasons for vomiting. Parasite infestation, indigestion, acidity are the prime cause. Vomiting causes dehydration and loss of electrolytes from body. So, give it ors (oral rehydration solution) @ 20-25 ml / hour frequently to combat that. Then go for deworming your puppy with suitable dewormer and liver tonic. Avoid protein type diets for few days. Give adequate carbohydrate type diet and plenty of water. Apply digestive tonic containing essential digestive enzymes twice daily after meal. In severe case of vomiting, go for fluid therapy (rl) with antacid and antivomitic injections. In case of fever use antipyretic like paracetamol suspention in proper dose with antacid. When everything will be alright, then go for vaccination. Please repeat dewotrming in every 3 months interval.

STRATEGIC DEWORMING GUIDELINES

Master of sciences, B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Salem
Parasites don't want to kill your kitten or puppy; they just want to use them as a dinner plate! Our goal is to prevent that from happening. Intestinal parasites have been around forever and are not going away, but you can control them with the proper deworming schedule. Hookworms and roundworms are by far the most common intestinal worms found in puppies and kittens. Roundworms compete with your pet for food, while hookworms live on blood, causing anemia.

Rough hair coats, diarrhea, malnutrition progressing to intestinal obstruction, and anemia are common issues with worms. We want to feed our pets - not the parasites. That is why we deworm dogs and cats. Don't wait until you are sure your pet has parasites because they have already caused damage at this point.

STRATEGIC DEWORMING GUIDELINES

Strategically deworming dogs and cats is a practice recommended by the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

DEWORMING PUPPIES AND KITTENS
Worms in puppies and kittens are common. This growth phase of their life is when they are most susceptible! Knowing when to worm puppies and kittens is important.
• Deworm puppies and kittens at 2, 4, 6, & 8 weeks of age, then again at 12 & 16 weeks of age.
• Deworm again at 6 months and 1 year.
• Then deworm as an adult.

ADULTS - WORMING DOGS AND CATS

We are recommending the standard here. If your dog or cat is a big hunter, they will need more frequent deworming - you must assess the risk for your pet.

• General Dog or Cat Worming: Thrice a year for life.
o Dogs put everything in their mouth and need deworming twice a year to eliminate the parasites they will pick up. Deworm outside cats thrice a year for the same reason.
• Cats that are strictly inside animals: Deworm twice a year.
• Cats that like to hunt: 3 times a year may be necessary.

NEWLY ACQUIRED ANIMALS
No matter what the history or age, assume they have parasites!
• Deworm immediately and repeat in 2 weeks.
• Then put on the above adult program.

WORMS IN DOGS AND CATS

DOGS :
• Roundworms and Hookworms
• Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms & Tapeworms

CATS:

• Tapeworm, Roundworm & Hookworms

Veterinarian,
PET-SAFETY Guidelines for SUMMERS!
- Never leave a pet in a car/vehicle alone, even for few minutes. The temperature inside the car goes up substantially compared to outside temperature and can cause life threatening heat stroke in pets.
- Change timings of walks – switch to early morning walks before sun heats up, and late in the night when environment cools down – May be 8AM-8PM!
- Keep ample drinking water available all the time for the pets!
- If you are housing your pets in A/C rooms, make sure to avoid “Temperature Shock”. I.E. Do not take them out immediately from a A/C room, or vice versa. Switch off the A/C  let the room temperature become normal  and then take them out, so as to minimize temperature difference to which pets are exposed.
- Watch out for TICKS! - Summer is active tick season, and it is better to be safe than sorry. Talk to us for the preventive strategies for tick infestations so as to protect your pets from the tick borne diseases.

Pl. Suggest is it true for a german shepherd breed that they should not sit on floor like tiles which can get them bad or deformed legs as such my dog just one month of age prefers to sit only on tiles,it never sits on dari or other mats.

Master of sciences, B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Salem
True as they could not balance a slippery floor . because they have paws as there foot it needs rough surface to have a grip so please try to avoid the tile flooring as much as possible

I want to know the reason for the death of my dog Bread: Labrador Cross Sex: Bitch Age: 20-03-2004 (12.5 years) Symptoms. stuffy got blind 4 Months ago but it was health. Before 1 months it was very hungry and urinating a lot. And a tumour on the tail and became very thin. Before one day it was health. I fed it with curd Rice, Pedigree Senior and milk (mixed) in the evening and rice in the night. It vomited the pedigree milk with in an hour. Before the dinner. After dinner it vomited 4 times color yellow. And in the morning it around 5 it started shouting with pain and biting her tail. Her two back legs were no working. She was unable to get up She was shouting and biting the tail. Finally when all of them seen them it took rest and kept her tongue out. And was not giving any movement. tongue became all black. I want to know the reason what is a sudden cause for the vomiting and pain and death. Happened 22-08-16.

B.V.Sc. & A.H., M.V.Sc- Veterinary Surgery and Radiology
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Stress and anxiety can lead dogs into a host of destructive and repetitive behaviors: dog turns to self-destructive activities like tail biting as a way to get attention. Any kind of rear or hindquarters injury — a tumor which might have got spread and destructing adjoining organs or fractured tail bone, for instance — is something a dog cannot inform his owner of, and may go unnoticed under normal circumstances. The intensity of the dog’s pain can sometimes lead her to act on by excessive chewing, biting, or licking at the affected area. Only veterinary X-rays will be able to properly diagnose such an issue. You also said she vomited yellowish. Most gastrointestinal diseases result in death over a short amount of time, but are rarely sudden. Sudden cases of intestinal torsion or volvulus (twisting of intestines due to over feeding or sudden activity immediately after having bulk food) all can result in a rapid deterioration and ultimate death. This can only be confirmed by an ultrasonography or in your case a post mortem. Very sorry for your loss.

Dogs need to wash to keep comfortable much like we do. They feel more comfortable and less irritable because they are clean. As such, you may well notice that your dog’s temperament improves with regular grooming. Similarly, the personal attention that they are getting will also improve their outlook and their overall attitude.

Enhancing Bonding - This is the main advantage of grooming your dog
yourself. You can actively look to form a bond with your dog that goes above
and beyond any other bond. The close personal attention that your dog gets
does not come in any other form and the shared experience can really make
you feel a connection to your dog that is founded on that.

Grooming is an essential element of the care of a dog. Every single owner should have a basic working knowledge of how to groom their dogs because it makes an awful lot of difference to not only how a dog looks but also to how he or she feels. A clean and well groomed dog is generally happier than a dirty and matted dog for a number of reasons. Firstly, groomed dogs have had personal attention from their owners and so are more contented as a result. They are also more secure in their position within a family as a result of the care and the bond that has been forged between owner and dog. Furthermore, well groomed dogs are often healthier because any health issues that arise can be spotted quickly and easily.

All of the above aside, it is an owner’s responsibility to look after a dog as well as possible and the basics of grooming do not require much effort to learn. However, you need to have a good basic knowledge of grooming tools and how they can be used to improve the overall appearance of your dogs.

My German shepherd aged about 5 years is not having food expect in evening. Today my mom gave him bath and noticed that on left ear edge a area about half a inch is swelling which seems like if some water like substance is in it. Also upper part of left eye is in same condition. Kindly help me in this regard with some effective medicines. Regards

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Most shephards tend to eat once that too in the evenings, especially in summers. The ear thing you mentioned could be Aural hematoma, and the water like swelling could be accumulation of unclotted blood. Kindly visit your vet and explore treatment options. It can vary form puncturing the swelling and drain contents (a recurrent procedure), to surgical correction (depends on how extensive it is) or Homeopathy meds to reduce recurrence. Take care.

The skin of your dog is entirely different from ours. There is significant ph difference so their skin is more sensitive than ours. Their body secretes some essential oils which gets depleted once you start bathing them daily. It results in drying of skin leading to flakes formation of policy kit is.
Some tips to remember---
*bathe your pets once in 10 days.
*groom your pets daily.
*do not use dettol/phenolic compounds on their body. It can be allergic.
*don't allow ticks/fleas/mites to thrive on their body.
*for hairy breeds, go for a complete hair-cut in summers.
*for breeds with drooping ears, take special care about ear cleaning.
*never use human soaps & shampoos like dove/clinic plus on dogs body. It can cause allergic dermatitis.
