Is Breast Reduction Safe?

Is Breast Reduction Safe?

While the complaint of being born flat chested is faced by a number of women, there are a few women who have heavy breasts. Over the time, large breasts have been linked with a number of health problems, such as backaches, neck pain, numbness in the fingers and shortness of breath. Thus it is not only for cosmetic reasons that many women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery. This involves the removal of tissues and skin from the breasts to reduce the size of the breasts and reshape them. Breast reduction is a very safe procedure, however, just like any other surgery, there is always a risk and hence the question arises, 'how safe is breast reduction surgery'.

Since the procedure involves making incisions in the skin and removing tissues, most women feel pain in the breasts for the first few days post surgery. This later transforms into a mild discomfort before which completely goes away after a few days. Pain medication and anti inflammatory drugs can help ease the pain. Swelling and bruising in the area is also a common effect of the surgery and may last for about a month or two. The patients are usually advised to wear a surgical bra all the time as it help in giving proper support which in turn helps ease the pain and reduce swelling.

Scarring is one of the most common risks associated with this surgery. To remove the tissue, a surgeon has to make an incision under the breast. This incision is usually positioned in line with the natural curves and creases of a woman's body in order to conceal them. However, it always leaves behind a scar. Scarring varies from person to person and also depends on the type of incision made. Typically, scars fade over time but for some women, they may remain noticeable for many years.

Fortunately, in most cases, the incisions can be restricted to areas covered by a bra or bikini. Some women complain loss of sensation in the breasts or nipples after such a procedure, but mainly this is a temporary side effect and resolves within a few months of the surgery. Depending on the type of procedure, some women may also find it difficult to breastfeed after the surgery.

On its own, breast reduction surgery is a fairly safe procedure as long as it is performed by a certified plastic surgeon on a healthy patient. Therefore, it is important to do plenty of research and go for a best possible surgeon. So, do not let your fear of surgery keep you from making life more comfortable for yourself!

Not Having Sex - 5 Things That Can Happen to You!

MBBS, MCCEE, Fellowship in Sexual Medicine

Not Having Sex - 5 Things That Can Happen to You!

An important part of your adult life and a way of expressing your love, sex can be an effort when, both you and your partner do not feel up to it.

However when you completely put a stop to having sex, these 5 things can happen:

  1. You feel more anxious: A study by a group of Scottish researchers reveals that when you go without sex for a long time, you are unable to cope with the pressures of life. Couples who had sex for at least once over a 14 day period were able to cope with stressful situations, the study revealed. During sex, your body releases chemicals like oxytocin and endorphins that leave you with happy feelings. When you abstain from it, you shut down an avenue to get rid of pent-up emotion or energy.
  2. It raises the possibility of prostate cancer in men: Research reveals that men who have sex regularly experience a 20% fall in their chances of developing prostate cancer. The reason is frequent episodes of ejaculation bring about the removal of harmful matter from the prostate gland.
  3. You become more prone to colds and flu: Less sex can affect your body's ability to fight off germs, making you prone to common colds and flu. A research by the Wilkes-Barre University shows that couples who have sex one or two times a week witness a 30% boost in the production of immunoglobulin A or IgA (an antibody that is the body's first line of defense against germs) compared to people who don't.
  4. It increases the risk for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men: Findings published in the American Journal of Medicine highlight the fact that men who have sex less frequently are two times more likely to experience ED than men who have sex about once a week. According to the researchers of the study, frequent sex allows the penis to maintain its strength and effectiveness.
  5. A drop in Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) for women: One good thing comes out of not having sex. It is said that about 80% of UTI (Urinary Tract Infections) occurs within 24 hours of having sex. During intercourse, bacteria from the vagina get transported into the urethra, leading to the infection of the area. For women, the decision to not have sex can reduce the risk of developing this condition. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Care before Pregnancy (Pre-conceptional Care)

Care before Pregnancy (Pre-conceptional Care)
Most of us have an idea that the couple should go to gynecologist only after they fall pregnant or when there is difficulty in conceiving. But we all know that prevention is better than cure. Then why should not we take precaution to avoid complications in pregnancy so that we can have healthy mother and healthy baby.

Some of the diseases can manifest during pregnancy, like some diseases of heart, blood pressure, blood sugar etc. But if the couple comes to doctor when they are planning pregnancy, then we can diagnose it and start treatment so that pregnancy can be safe to both the mother and the baby.

On the other hand, some pre-existing disease may turn serious during pregnancy and endanger life of both mother and baby. This includes thyroid disease, hypertension, epilepsy, renal disease, cardiac disease etc. If taken care of properly, the disease can be controlled before pregnancy so that the risk can be reduced. Again all the drugs are not safe for the baby. So, if treated before pregnancy, the mother can be put on safer but effective drugs before pregnancy.

Some diseases may run in family and often goes undetected and can affect the baby. Thlassaemia, hemophilia etc are the best examples. So, if the couple comes to us before pregnancy, we can screen them to diagnose whether they are bearer of the disease or not and then we can take care to prevent birth of defective baby.

Some diseases indicate that there may be problems in having pregnancy, like problems in periods or abdominal pain in female, sexual problems in male and female etc. If treated properly, it will avoid unnecessary time wastage for trying for pregnancy.

The woman can be instructed how to remain healthy to have normal baby, before pregnancy. She can be advised some drugs (like folic acid), can be asked to avoid harmful drugs and substances (like drugs, excessive vitamin a, excessive vitamin d, excessive caffeine, smoking etc). Even the husband can be asked how to improve his fertility (by avoiding heat exposure to his scrotum).

Again some infections can be dangerous for the baby. So, before pregnancy we can treat the women for the infections and in some cases we can vaccinate her to prevent infection.

"a stitch in time saves nine. So, why don't you consult your gynecologist when you are planning for pregnancy? have smooth journey throughout pregnancy and enjoy parenthood.

Watery discharge during pregnancy can be due to many different reasons. You will have to know the underlying cause to determine if what's coming out of your vagina is normal or not. 1. Leukorrhea. Leucorrhea, the surge in the levels of estrogen, may increase the blood flow towards your vagina, which may cause vaginal discharge during the early stages of pregnancy. The discharge is usually thin and white in color. 2. Urine. Leaking urine is quite normal during pregnancy, especially when you sneeze, cough or have a good belly laugh. The smell and color will also confirm the discharge is urine. 3. Mucus Plug Your cervix will become thin and dilate during pregnancy, which may lead to the expulsion of the mucus plug. The plug fills the cervical canal and is made of mucus. It prevents any passage of bacteria to your baby. The plug comes off in the later stages of pregnancy, usually when you're ready to give birth. 4. Amniotic Fluid Your discharge may be the amniotic fluid that comprises of dead skin cells, cervical and vaginal secretions, and vaginal bacteria. If you notice sudden gush of fluids after the end of your third trimester, this could be the amniotic fluid discharge. 5. Preterm Labor If you're witnessing a brownish- or red-colored watery discharge before you complete 37 weeks, it could be a sign of preterm labor. Go see your doctor immediately for proper diagnosis. 6. Yeast Infection If you experience symptoms such as vaginal itchiness, swollen vulva, burning sensation and greening-yellow discharge, this may indicate a yeast infection. You have to consult your doctor because it is not easy to control a yeast infection during pregnancy and it could be quite uncomfortable, too. 7. Bacterial Vaginosis You may develop bacterial vaginosis due to an imbalance in the vaginal bacteria. The most common symptoms are yellowish or grayish-white watery discharge with a strong "fishy" smell. It is important to treat it on time or else it may lead to preterm delivery, miscarriage, or post pregnancy uterine infection. 8. Sexually Transmitted Disease If you're experiencing watery discharge that changes color from white to gray, yellow or green, this could be due to a vaginal infection or sexually transmitted disease. SO YOU HAVE CONSULT YOUR GP FOR YOUR PROBLEM.

4 Ways To Treat Genital Sores

4 Ways To Treat Genital Sores

Genital sores usually spread through infection that has occurred during sexual contact. These are red and itchy and cause immense pain. There may also be bleeding if rubbed or scratched. This is usually a form of sexually transmitted infection which can be caused due to dermatitis or other allergies. Genital herpes and syphilis as well as bacterial diseases like chancroid can also cause the occurrence of this condition.

Here are a few ways in which this may be treated:

- Medication: The general physician or gynaecologist can prescribe a number of drugs that can help in treating this ailment. To begin with, you may have to ingest oral antibiotics or antiviral medication that can ensure that the bacteria do not get a chance to fester, grow and spread. Corticosteroids can also be prescribed for particularly severe cases. Pain relievers can help in soothing the area and the blisters in the genitals, while anti itching drugs like hydrocortisone can ensure that you do not scratch the area which can also lead to bleeding.

- Surgical Removal: A particularly troublesome bout or sores can be removed with the help of non-invasive and surgical procedures depending on the severity of the situation. You may be required to go under medical observation for a few hours or days after the procedure to ensure that there are no complications or further cases of infection.

- Intermittent Treatment: After the initial treatment where you will most likely go through a week long course of antiviral medication, or three weeks of antibiotic therapy, you may have to go through antiviral therapy every now and then. This is especially recommended if yours is a recurring case. Doctors usually recommend the ingestion of pills for two or three days as soon as you start to experience the painful symptoms and eruptions.

- Suppressive Treatment: Very frequent outbreaks can make the doctors prescribe an antiviral pill a day, which will basically act towards suppressing an attack. This kind of treatment is especially helpful if you have had more than six outbreaks in a span of twelve months. This can bring down the risk of outbreaks by about 80%, as per medical studies. This can also reduce the risk of passing on the infection to a partner. If you are taking this kind of treatment, you should see your doctor at least once or twice a year too.

Taking home remedies like a warm compress or sitting in a warm tub of water with a few drops of antibacterial can also help. But you must see a doctor before treating these sores at home. You can also prevent the same by practicing safe sex. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Hi I understood your concern 1 inj. Hcg will help to rupture ovarian folllicle which has reached up to 18-20 mm. It does not increase size. Its absolutely safe 2 you will ovulate after 36 hrs of giving injection 3 to increase follicle size, either you go for tablets like clomiphene or injection like inj. Fsh/hmg, but this all ideally you should take under exper fertility specialist, with regular monitoring with follicular study thanks.

General Physician,
Try to understand. This is technically so much complicated subject that just listing some misspelled words none can dare to say any thing. Line of treatment is not your concern. Your concern is recurrent abortion and for that the treating gynaecologist is the best person to explain all your question. If he / she doesn't you have every right to change the doctor.

I had a kidney transplant 6 years back. Now I am 31 yrs. I am on immunosuppressives medicines. I had 2 miscarriages recently. What are the precautions I should take before next pregnancy?

Weadvise pregnancy at least one year after transplant (now u had 6 years). But before planning pregnancy, we need to check the status of the kidney function, blood pressure, sugar, urine tests and also the need of immunosuppressants needed (as we need to use minimum drugs for minimum doses). Then you can start planning.

Problems may be- due to cyst- twisting of cyst, rupture and hemorrhage, early delivery and abortion. But in most cases, these problems don't occur. Solution is to keep close observation and removal of the cyst only when it increases in size or causes problems. Cervical fibroid- can cause problem in delivery and may need cesarean section which should be done by expert surgeon.
