What should we do to improve our platelet value. What are the precautions to be taken against dengue fever.

What should we do to improve our platelet value. What are the precautions to be taken against dengue fever.
For improving the platelet count naturally, have nutritious, balanced food specially: - Papaya - Wheat grass - Pumpkin - Spinach - Vitamin C like lemons, oranges, tomatoes, cantaloupes, kiwi, spinach, bell peppers and broccoli - Indian Gooseberris - Sesame oil - Beetroot Adding to it, have plenty of water and do regular exerises (it increases your oxygen capacity and circulation both). Additional Tips Limit alcohol intake as it can hamper production of platelets in the bone marrow. Also, avoid tonic water as the quinine in it can contribute to decreased blood platelet counts. Avoid eating raw vegetables when your platelet count is low as it may damage the intestinal lining. Instead, steam vegetables until soft and then eat them. Eat 1 to 2 red guavas daily to improve the platelet count. Foods that act as blood purifiers like aloe vera must also be included in your diet. Avoid all dairy products, including milk, yogurt, cheese and butter, for a few days as these products can contribute to mucus formation and worsen some autoimmune diseases. Avoid canned and processed foods that do not offer many nutrients. Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night to help your body recharge and produce more platelets. Eat whole-grain cereals, brown rice and whole-wheat products. Avoid white flour, white rice and processed foods. Avoid activities that may cause injuries. Ask your doctor before taking over-the-counter medications as some medicines may affect your platelet function. Avoiding mosquitoes bite is the major precaution against dengue fever. People should take following necessary precautions to combat dengue fever before it gets in body: Keep home, environment and surrounding hygiene Remove all stagnant water and containers Keep all drains well maintained and repair all chokes Avoid accumulation of ground water Fill up all defective grounds Don’t store water Avoid unnecessary irrigation Cover all containers properly Change flower vase water once a week to prevent dengue mosquito breeding there Wrap all unused plastic tyres Regularly change water in animal drinking containers Use mosquito repellents to avoid mosquito bite Use mosquito screen to prevent mosquito attack Use aerosols and mosquito coils to kill mosquitoes Wear long sleeve and fully covered clothes Use mosquitoes net around bed while sleeping

H to gain weight you need to combine a balanced eating pattern with regular physical activity. You should be eating at least 6 small meals a day, rather than sticking to 3 square meals. You could divide it as 3 main meals and 3 snacks. You need to be eating every 2-3 hours. Space out snacks during the day so you don't spoil your appetite. Bread, cereal, rice, whole wheat, dalia and pasta: biscuits, and corn-bread are good sources of carbohydrates. Fruits: dried fruits, fruit nectars, and large quantities of fresh fruits vegetables: include, potatoes, peas, corn in your diet. Meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts: beef, pork, lamb, poultry, salmon, omelets, nuts, peanut butter, kidney beans, chickpeas will help you gain weight. Include dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese: milk, fruited yogurts, hard cheeses, ice cream, puddings, custards, milkshakes. -nuts and seeds make a healthy option for snacks. -roasted channas and peanuts are good -peanut butter on the sandwiches are a great mid-meal choice. -you must know that cereals actually contain some healthy calories. Stay hydrated: drinking plenty of water and other fluids like juices, milk, soups etc, will work in your favour. Do not drink water before a meal and in between the meal as it may make you lose your appetite, thus calorie intake suffers. Sleep: at least 8 hours of sound sleep is a must. Since your body is actually building up muscles, while you rest. Weight gainers have long term side effects.

The best way to get rid of clogged pores is to follow a good daily skin care regimen. Regular exfoliation of your skin will remove dead skin cells, oil, dirt and other impurities that lead to clogged pores. Many home remedies can help you get rid of clogged pores so you can enjoy smoother, younger-looking skin. Steaming the face is an inexpensive and highly effective remedy for clogged pores. Steaming opens the clogged pores and allows all kinds of impurities trapped inside to be washed away. Sugar works as a natural exfoliating agent to help break up scar tissue and unclog skin pores. Fuller's earth also helps to get rid of clogged pores. It acts like a sponge, drawing out the substances that clog pores. Plus, fuller's earth is highly beneficial for oily skin as it can reduce excess oil secretion and leave your skin feeling incredibly clean and healthy. Lemons can also be used to keep the skin free from clogged pores. The citric acid present in lemons helps exfoliate the skin and clean out dirt and oil that clogs the pores. You can even consult a dermatologist to help you with various laser treatments available such as MDA, skin peels, Fractional Co2 etc.

Coffee - Is that Second Cup Really Good For You?

Coffee - Is that Second Cup Really Good For You?

Most of us wake up to a cup of hot coffee every morning. Coffee is like an indispensable part of most of our lives. But, there has been a lot of debate regarding the effect of coffee on human health. While some believe that coffee is a performance booster and prevents against certain diseases, others express doubt on the goodness of caffeine in coffee. Rather, the presence of caffeine keeps a lot of us worried about the adverse effects of coffee.

But, one needs to keep in mind that coffee is a complex beverage. It has both its pros and cons. One needs to know all about coffee before ordering the second cup for himself or herself. Reasons for having that second cup of coffee:

  1. Coffee activates your system: It contains caffeine that increases the level of adrenaline hormone in your body. This hormone is responsible for getting you ready for fighting against odds or physical tasks.
  2. Coffee checks your body weight: It contains minerals like magnesium and potassium. These minerals maintain the insulin level in your body. Therefore, by drinking coffee, your appetite for quick snacks gets killed. However, the sugar levels stay intact. It also burns fat.
  3. Protection against cancer: A recent study claimed that coffee can provide protection against cancer. It is said to have the potential to reduce the chances of having prostate cancer in men and endometrial cancer in women.
  4. Guard against other serious diseases: Coffee is believed to provide prevention against some serious diseases Type II diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer disease and stroke. It contains antioxidants that boost body’s immune system. Caffeine can lower one’s sensitivity towards insulin and provides impairment to glucose tolerance, reducing chances of developing Type II diabetes.

Reasons for not having that second cup of coffee:

  1. Toxic: Coffee has the possibility of being toxic. It can be adulterate with a lot of harmful impurities. The cheaper and poor quality coffee can prove to be highly toxic sometimes.
  2. Don’t overdrink: Coffee can prove very harmful and even lethal, if taken in larger quantities. It has the potential to kill an individual, if 80-100 cups are consumed in a shorter session.
  3. It gives sleeplessness: Coffee can turn you into an insomniac, if consumed in larger amounts.

Conclusion
Nothing is good, if overdone or overused. The same goes for coffee as well. It is good for your health if taken in small amounts at measured intervals. You can definitely order the second cup of coffee for yourself, provided you keep a check on the number of cups you have consumed in the entire day. A sensible individual will drink less, but drink regularly to get blessed with the goodness of coffee beans. An irresponsible drinker will just get addicted to see the worst in future. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Chronic Shoulder & Neck Pain - Ways It Can Be Diagnosed!

MD, FIPP
Pain Management Specialist, Kolkata
Chronic Shoulder & Neck Pain - Ways It Can Be Diagnosed!

The neck and shoulder have a huge range of movement and thus they are more prone to injury. The ball and socket joint at the upper arm is the shoulder and both the neck and the shoulder are made up of soft tissues, muscles and ligaments.

Reasons behind pain Injured rotator cuffs:

Rotator cuffs are the tendons supporting the shoulder. If they are injured it might lead to a chronic loss of the range of movement. This is more commonly known as a frozen shoulder

  1. Dislocation: Dislocated disc of the neck or shoulder due to an accident would cause severe pain in the affected area.
  2. Fractures: Fractured collarbone or the upper arm bone may result in chronic pain
  3. Tendonitis: This occurs due to the over usage of the arms or neck or strains due to over exertion like in sports.
  4. An unstable shoulder joint: If there is instability in the ball and socket joint of the upper arm, chances of having a chronic pain is high. Others: Degenerative arthritis, herniated disc, and even heart attacks can be the other possible causes of chronic neck and shoulder pain

When to go to the doctor?

When the patient experiences a pain due to a severe blow or injury, the neck pain radiates down the legs and arms, a feeling of numbness and tingling sensation, or has a stiff neck with fever or vomiting, it is essential to seek the advice of a Doctor.

Diagnosis for shoulder and neck pain X-ray:

The main form of diagnosing a pain is an x-ray. It helps to reveal diseases from arthritis, tumour, slipped disc, narrowing spinal cord, fractures and spinal cord instability.

  1. MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging or simply the MRI reveals the detail of nerve-related issues along with the problems in the ligaments and tendons.
  2. CT scan: There may be instances when the injuries are difficult to be diagnosed. And, in the case of a fracture, a CT Scan is advised for more details. It is also an alternative to MRI.
  3. ECG: An Electrocardiogram is a way of diagnosis if shoulder and neck pain continues along with chest pain or shortness of breath. If there is a risk of an individual having a heart attack, then an ECG is recommended.
  4. Electro Diagnosis: Electromyography referred to as EMG and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) are used to diagnose pain in the arm, neck, shoulder followed by a numb feeling on the affected areas.

Treatment for chronic shoulder and neck pain
A simple sprain on the neck and shoulder would demand a rest for a few days along with pain medication. If the pain is due to muscle spasms application of dry or moist heat may provide relief. In the case of a swelling due to injuries, a cold ice pack 4 to 8 times a day will provide immense relief. Patients might be advised a cast or sling for the shoulder pain. The soft tissues in the neck and shoulder can be treated with pain relievers taken for a few days. Muscle relaxants are also prescribed depending on the severity of the pain. Local corticosteroid injections are helpful for shoulder arthritis. Platelet rich plasma injection is another modern treatment for arthritis or tendinopathy. In some situation, radio frequency procedures are very helpful. Exercises are very effective for both neck and shoulder pain movement. Surgery might be an option if nerve roots are affected.

The tooth can be saved by RCT or may be extracted to permanently cure your mother's problem, a scaling and polishing mey be required after professional examination. Meanwhile ask her to take antibiotic amoxiclav 625 mg 3 times daily for 5 days after food and diclofenac 50 mg when needed. It qill prevent tooth infection to spread and complicating her problem. Let her use a chlorhexidine mouthwash also twice daily to have an additional check on oral hygiene.

Can you send me a clinical picture pointing to the swelling and also get a few blood tests like cbc, esr, crp, serum uric acid done and send them across to me so that I can see and advise accordingly

I am 22 years old and weigh 60 kgs. Is there a standard amount of vitamins and minerals which I must consume daily to stay fit.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye, Thanks for the query. There is no fixed amount, but your needs depend on your requirements, your present intake, activity levels, deficiency etc. Gaining weight requires you to eat more calories than you burn. Although fried or sugary foods are calorie dense, eating them exclusively won’t provide enough nutrition to keep you energetic and healthy. Eating several meals and snacks throughout the day and including nutritious, calorie-dense food will help you gain weight healthfully. Weight gain depends primarily on your genetics, age, weight and activity level. To gain weight, you need to eat more calories than you burn. If you’re not used to eating large quantities of food at one time, you may find it difficult to fit all of your calories into three meals per day. Eating nutritious, calorie-dense foods every two to three hours will help you get your calories in without making you overly full and sluggish. If you tend to forget to eat or are always on the go, bring calorie-dense snacks such as eggs, mixed nuts, fruits and dairy. Nutritious, calorie-dense foods provide essential vitamins and minerals, which promote good health and energy. Adding ghee and cream to foods adds additional calories for very little extra physical bulk. Fruit juice, masala milk provides crucial nutrients. Meal-replacement shakes and protein powder sound like good options but also remember that unless your diet is not planned sadly they won't help.
