3 Physiotherapy Home Exercises for Back Pain

I  Single Knee to Chest

Tight hamstrings can restrict movement in the pelvis and lead to back pain and injury. This is one of the most effective stretches for relieving lower back pain, especially when a full leg extension is added.

1.Single Knee to Chest Lie flat on your back with your legs together and arms out to the sides. Point the toes straight up and be sure the small of your back is pressed to the floor.

2.With your right hand, bring your right thigh up to your chest until you feel a stretch in your lower back and hips. Be sure to keep the left leg flat. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds and repeat on the other side.

CAUTION: Don’t arch your back

II  Double Knees to Chest

Flexibility of the back muscles and mobility of the spine are important for success in many sports, for both performance and injury prevention. This is a simple stretch that pays a big dividend when it comes to targeting the low back muscles.

1.Lie flat on your back with your legs together and feet flat on the floor. Be sure that your back is flat and in full contact with the floor.

2.As you lift your legs, lock both arms under your thighs and pull your knees toward your chest.Stop when you feel a stretch to the lower back or if you feel discomfort. Hold the stretch for 15 to 20 seconds.

CAUTION: Do not do this if you feel pain in your low back during the stretch.

EASIER: If you find it too challenging to pull both legs up at the same time, keep one foot flat on the floor as you bring one leg to the chest and then alternate.

III  Seated Low Back Rotation

Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work and visits to the doctor. This pain often results from a lack of physical activity, which leads to weakened muscles. If you have a tight but otherwise healthy back, perform this stretch slowly and gently for an effective mild stretch.

1.Seated Low Back Rotation LOWER BACK Seated on a stability ball or in a chair with your back straight and core tight, begin with your feet flat on the floor and arms at your sides.

2.Cross your right leg over your left. Turn your torso and shoulders to the right.Hold this position for 10 to 15 seconds and repeat on the opposite side, with the left leg over the right.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You are very young to have a persistent neck pain as a health issue. If you have localized neck pain with no other symptoms like radiating upper limb pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your neck while working and sleeping and especially observing precautions of neck ergonomics - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. We will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like dynamic x rays of neck and few blood tests for evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Backacke can be due to numerous reasons like back strain, big tummy, slip disc, lumber spondylosis. You can do following home remedies: 1) mix camphor in coconut oil and boil it. Massage it followed by hot fomentation. 2) have turmeric & honey milk. 3) put a hot-water bag on back supported by a cushion. 4) add ginger while brewing your tea 5) if you are overweight, go for weight loss program 6) stay away from cold, go for hot water baths.

Osteoporosis - 4 Common Signs!

Osteoporosis - 4 Common Signs!

Osteoporosis is a degenerative condition connected with the bones. In this condition, the bones become absolutely brittle and hollow over a period of time. In normal scenarios, bones usually get broken down and repaired over time. They are known as the living tissue of the body. But when the old bone does not get removed due to the lack of new bone creation, this is known as osteoporosis. This disease can affect both men and women. Many women go through this condition after menopause. Let us find out more about the symptoms of this condition.

Causes: There are a variety of things that cause the painful symptoms of osteoporosis. Hormonal changes that affect the sex and thyroid hormones as well as adrenal and parathyroid glands are known to cause this condition. Also, low calcium intake over a prolonged period, especially after childbirth and during menopause can cause this condition in many women. Further, eating disorders where the patient practices severe restrictions when it comes to food intake, can also have a bearing on the person, which keeps the right nutrients from reaching the bones. Steroids and other kinds of medicines that have been used on a prolonged basis in order to treat cancer, gastric reflux, seizures and to cure transplant rejections, can also lead to this condition. Celiac disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel conditions and liver or kidney disease can also lead to osteoporosis.

Symptoms

  1. Fracture: One of the most common symptoms of osteoporosis includes fragile bones that may lead to fractures. Even a minor movement or a fall can cause a fracture as the bones are brittle and hollow. Because the bones are more delicate than usual, these fractures can be triggered easily by an impactful action like a particularly loud sneeze or a persistent cough.
  2. Neck and Back Pain: Compression fractures in the spine are a common occurrence for people who are suffering from osteoporosis. The vertebrae that have collapsed can pinch the nerves radiating from the spinal cord. This can be a very painful condition that goes from tender pain to debilitating sharp pain.
  3. Height: One of the most noticeable symptoms of osteoporosis includes the visible loss of height. A patient suffering from this condition will appear to have shrunk suddenly, in a very mild way. It can cause a condition known as kyphosis, which is basically a stooped back. Owing to this condition, there may be severe pain in the neck and lumbar, or lower back region as well.
  4. Emergency Situation: If you happen to be experiencing debilitating and sudden pain in the hip or wrists or other such areas, then it is recommended to see a doctor immediately as this could indicate a fracture. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
