I have a hectic schedule where I have to leave for work in morning at 9: 30 am and come back home at 10: 00 pm in evening. Further I have to take out time in morning for studying for my course. I am unable to take out time as scheduled and usually sleep in morning, where its necessary for me to take out time every for studying. Should I take some supplements to make my body work the whole day. Please suggest some tips. Thank you.

At your age, this is a strenuous schedule and unless you take adequate rest you are likely to cause irreparable damage as time goes by. Just because you are young it does not mean that you can abuse your life/body to this extent. Your body needs periodic rest and that is better than taking any supplements to counter the damage. In fact, it will not do you any good even with supplements because you may not feel the immediate impact but over the long haul, the body will feel the strain. Instead, I suggest that you squeeze in short naps of 20 minutes, especially at noon times, you will affect some restoration. Supplements are good but not for this type of abuse.

Respected, Sir/Madam, I am 37 years old male and have right arm pain from shoulder to hand for 6 months. I have used ...
Pain in the arm can result from a number of factors. Abnormalities or injury of the skin, nerves, bones, joints, blood vessels, and soft tissues of the arm can all result in pain. Arm pain may be the result of referred pain from another part of the body. Please go to a physiotherapist to assess and treat the underlying condition. If pain is caused by an activity, modify or stop the activity. Rest the arm and resume activity gradually. Monitor the response to the activity. Pain experienced in the right arm is usually not serious, but when it is coupled with other symptoms like pain in the leg or tightness of the chest, it may be more serious. Try some home remedies: ice will reduce pain and swelling. Apply ice or cold packs immediately to prevent or minimize swelling. Apply the ice or cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 or more times a day. Elevate the painful area on pillows while applying ice and anytime you are sitting or lying down. Try to keep the area at or above the level of your heart to help minimize swelling. Apply heat and begin gentle exercise with the aid of moist heat to help restore and maintain flexibility. Some experts recommend alternating between heat and cold treatments. Gently massage or rub the area to relieve pain and encourage blood flow. Do not massage the area if it causes pain. Do not smoke or use other tobacco products. Smoking slows healing because it decreases blood supply and delays tissue repair. Best wishes.

My mother is 69 years old. She is suffering from severe sciatica pain on her lower back, thighs and hip area. This pain has been with her for last 3 years now. What shall we do?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Sciatica pain is called a syndrome. It signifies nerve pain spreading along the back if the thigh from lower back. There may be. Sensation problems of different varieties as well as muscle wasting and weakness in the region where the sciatic nerve is locared. But the mere syndromic diagnosis is not enough as the same symptoms may happen due to sciatic nerve compression like slipped disc. Intra spinal tumour. Local abscess. Bony growth compressing the nerve. Among many. At her age she is likely to suffer from osteoporosis. Vitamin d and calcium deficiency etc. So an mri of the limbo sacral spine will be of immense help. Youay consult van orthopedic surgeon for proper management.

Ways To Treat Degenerative Disc Disease And Spondylosis!

It is important for you to know about degenerative disc disease (DDD) and spondylosis. Spondylosis is an umbrella term for spine pain, which occurs because of degenerative conditions. Spondylosis refers to several conditions. They include spinal stenosis, which is the abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal, leading to leg pain, degeneration due to DDD and degenerative arthritis or osteoarthritis involving the spine. It may also include cervical osteoarthritis or neck arthritis.

Spondylosis is a common condition, which is age related. The joints and discs present in the neck are specifically affected as a result of this condition. It commonly develops on account of the wear and tear of the cartilage and bones present in the neck. This condition, in spite of being common, worsens with age. In many patients, symptoms are not observed externally, but pain and muscle spasms are experienced.

Many people with spondylosis do not undertake treatment in spite of suffering from the symptoms and pain. In case the symptoms are prevalent over a long time and tend to worsen, you have several modes of treatment to choose from. They may include medicines, corticosteroid injections, physical therapy and even surgery in some extreme cases.

How does DDD or spondylosis occur?

DDD is a spinal condition. It is caused due to the breakdown of the intervertebral discs. With ageing, the spine starts to show signs of wearing and tearing. This happens on account of the discs drying out and shrinking. All these age-related changes are responsible for arthritis, spinal stenosis and disc herniation. Because of these factors, pressure is likely to fall on your nerves and spinal cords, which may further cause back pain. DDD or spondylosis also develops on account of these factors.

Treatment for DDD and spondylosis

There are various modes of treatment, which are available for you to choose from in order to get relief from the symptoms and pain associated with DDD or spondylosis. It can be medicines. You may be prescribed typical painkiller medications, such as non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS, muscle relaxants, oral steroids, etc, It can be physical therapy like ultrasound and massage, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) etc. When above modalities fails interventional pain management may do miracles. There are few interventional procedures like epidurals, Rami communicantes fibre RF, or some intradiscal procedures. Rarely these patients needs surgery.

Every mode of treatment has got its own benefits, but has its limitations as well.

My right arm has been hurting for the past two weeks now. The pain only occurs when I move my hand in a particular way else in a resting position it doesn't hurt. Guess I slept on my arm. The pain is like a nerve pull. What could be the reasons for the pain and what do you suggest?

Hi Thanks for your query and Welcome to Lybrate. I am Dr Akshay from Fortis Hospital, New Delhi. The pain can actually be due to muscular strain, or a soft tissue element. So Rest to affected part, Ice packs at home, physical therapy under supervision of a physiotherapist and gentle anti inflammatory medication like Tab Etoshine or Tab Paracetamol or whichever suits you should be sufficient to help you get rid of this pain, but it may take 2-3 weeks. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation. Thanks & Regards Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena Consultant Orthopaedics Fortis Hospital, New Delhi

I am suffering from knee pain from last one month. I am a athlete and I am feeling very bad pain in my right knee.
As arthritis is very common that you get generally bilaterally. Ice therapy would definitely help to reduce the inflammation. We also advise you to use knee cap which would help to prevent the knee from damaging further and also to maintain the quadriceps muscle tone. Pain in the right leg If you have leg pain please check your body weight and your hemoglobin levels, as Anemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having leg pain though there may not be any pathological reasons for back pain. My suggestion would be to wear MCR Chapels which will help you to prevent the weight falling on the If you have back pain while walking and standing first of all check your weight and your hemoglobin levels, as Anemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having back pain though there may not be any pathological reasons for back pain. My suggestion would be to wear MCR Chapels which will help you to prevent the weight falling on the back. And also should check whether you have flat foot on the right leg that also might be the reason to have pain in one particular leg Simple Knee ExerciesSpecific knee exercises will also help ie. Keeping ball underneath the knee and keep pressing it. That's the simple exercise which will help you to strengthen the knee Ice therapy would definitely help to reduce the inflammation. We also advise you to use knee cap which would help to prevent the knee from damaging further and also to maintain the quadriceps muscle tone.
