You may have sensitive teeth or decayed teeth.
Presentation - wedge shaped defects at teeth and gingival junction.
Cause- loss of outter protective layer of teeth (enamel, leaves the inner dentine exposed. Dentine has tubular structure which contains dentinal fluid and nerve endings from the pulp of teeth. When exposer to hot or cold, these dentinal fluid moves in tubules and irritates the nerve ending in tubules, leading to sharp shooting which persis for seconds.
Reasons:- aggressive horizontal brushing (most common), attrition of teeth, abfraction, ginival recession.
Rx:- brushing twice daily with anti sensitive tooth paste for atleast 3 weeks
Recommended:- shy-nm, vantej, sensodyne repair and protect.
Most often people complain inspite of using anti sensitivity tooth paste they have pain in the teeth. Beware you might be having decay in your teeth.
Presentation - brownish black spots or frank cavitations on the teeth surfaces. Food lodgement in teeth.
Cause - mouth contains numerous microbial flora, among which bacteria namely streptococcus mutants and other bacterias have been implicated of causing tooth decay.
These bacteria consume glucose from food debris in mouth, produce glycan which helps in formation of plaque, on calcification it forms calculus (tartar) and they also produce acid which decompose the enamel structure, leading to cavitations.
Reasons- frequent snacking between meals, consuming stick food like chocolate, biscuit, chips etc, improper brushing.
