My spouse got cracked nipple problem. She has 15 month baby with breastfeeding. She is using nipcare cream and some antibiotics which was prescribed by her doctor but not getting relief.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Correcting your nursing technique can go a long way toward letting cracked nipples heal. Sometimes just the slightest change in positioning will make a world of difference. Feed on the less injured side first, if you have one. Babies often nurse more gently on the second side since they’re less hungry. Apply a cold pack to numb the injured area before nursing. Cold can help dull the pain, particularly during the initial latch, which tends to hurt the most. After breastfeeding Clean your nipples gently, Use an antibacterial ointment if you have an open wound, Take painkillers like ibuprofen about 30 minutes before nursing can help lessen pain and swelling.

My grand daughter (40) days old cries every day late evening time. I have consulted leading pediatrician . Some nosal drop and suspected cold and some medicine for spazams is given but till this crying continues. Please suggest.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
It looks like evening colic, for which no reason can be subscribed. Nothing to worry if child is taking good amount of feeds and growing well. Support and make the child feel secure. She will grow out of this sooner. May give colimex drops 4-5 half an hour before fixed time (if any) of crying. This is common problem faced by many young mothers.

my friend has 1 month baby girl and from the day she is born whenever her mother tries to feed her automatically she vomits all the milk out of her mouth I have consulted a doctor in my village he I no child specialist he advised my friend wife not to eat any vegetable and she stopped eating vegetables she has tried this and week but nothing is changed still the baby is not Able to digest anything please advise me Thanks.

DNB Paediatrics, DCH, MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
Hello lybrate-user, congratulations on being a new parent. Firstly I would say mostly babies spit out milk in a curdled form which is quite normal. If the baby vomits after feeds then the best way out is to keep the baby upright for about 15-20 minutes after feeding the baby. This will lessen the chances of baby vomitting out the milk. Secondly your wife can eat anything and everything as that has no relation to the baby vomitting. She needs good amount of nutrition post delivery and more so while lactating so kindly do not cut down her vegetable intake but give her plenty of it and a good balanced diet.

Good Breast Feeding: How to Know?

MD - Paediatrics, DNB (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Rourkela

Usually mothers often feel insecure about their milk production amount and they often feel that their babies aren't getting enough milk, which results in switching to formula feeds, which is not good for their babies in the long run.

This post will help the willing mothers to feed their babies and help as confidence building measure.

1. Milk production gets boosted when mother keep their babies close to body. It provide warmth, bonding, ease tension, etc

2. Proper positioning of baby while feeding is important. You can watch YouTube videos on breastfeeding positions, like CRADLE, CROSS CRADLE, FOOTBALL positions etc.

3. Breastfeeding is a painless procedure,if you are feeling pain, something is wrong.Getting sore nipple, crack nipple are findings of improper attachment.

4. Feed the baby for atleast 20min, it helps baby getting foremilk(watery part of milk) which quench thirst as well as hind milk(thick part of milk) which provides satiety.

5. If baby sleeps while feeding, wake her up by gentle stroking in feet, completely empty your breast otherwise the baby becomes cranky, pass frequent small quantity stools with improper weight gain

6. Passage of urine more than 8 times per day, good sleep in between feeds and proet weight gain are good sign of successful breast feeding.

7. Dont get biased based on advertisement of formula feed in media. They aren't superior to breastmilk in any ways.Breastmilk provide protection against asthma, allergies, blood pressure, heart diseases etc

HAPPY NURSING..

My son was clapped by his dad on my sons back and thrown on chair after he cut his sisters hair. I recall my son crawling away and his dad running after him and clapping him on his back some more. Another occasion he put a whole pepper in his mouth because he was annoyed by his son. My son was diagnosed by PTSD. My son is petrified of seeing his dad and cries at the mention of seeing him. He talks of running away. As a result he pees and messes himself up. His dad wants to see him. His dad has admitted to having a anger problem. Do I force my son to go visit with him. I am concerned about his emotional wellbeing. What am I to do.

Hi! Your hubby's behavior is very rough and rude towards his son. One thing your hubby and you have to realize kids are naughty these days you need to change them affectionately and not through being very strict. Actually your hubby's behavior would affect your son mentally. It is advisable to keep Dad and son separately for some years until your son gets recovered from this incident completely. Because your son may turn to be a fearful guy in future either in society or college or in any situation because of his Dad's rude behavior. You can actually console your son, comfort him and change his mindset to a more social Behavior. You need to throw away the fear from his mind and make him more bold. You can make him participate in some extracurricular activities like sports etc to make him lead normal life. Try to be his friendly mother so that he succeeds in life. You need to make your son more friendly, frank and bold towards others. So let him be separate from his Dad for few years till he grows big enough to face situation. I do not know what is your son's age but I believe he is very young to handle his Dad's behavior. Take care of your son. Be friendly and make him a perfect guy in life to succeed. With regards, Psy. MSV.

About feeding child: can I feed my 4th month baby cow powdered milk .is it safe, if can pls tell me about dosage.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Yes you can and there is no specific dosage. You make 30 or 60 ml milk and feed with spoon or sipper and not bottle feed. Any waste has to be discarded and not kept for later use .Breast milk has to be continued and formula feed can be given after breast milk only . From 4th month you can give home made semi solids mashed well also

I have a daughter of 11 years she is not all interested in studies. She is very michevios in her class. She doesn't listen to any one. In other all she is very active.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
She needs to advised these tips or need counsellings. If you feel excessive sleep or tiredness/ head spinning or vertigo like feeling you have to make sure you have no anaemia or hypothyroidism by doing a blood CBC & TSH and inform me directly 10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings. If you find answer helpful please click on “helpful” tab for knowing my efforts are useful CONCENTRATION TIPS Here’s some tips to get into a state of deep concentration where work / or studies flow easily so that you can do well in examinations/ and or do your work well. 1) Cut Off the Noise Getting into a state of concentration can take at least fifteen minutes. If you are getting distracted every five, you can’t possibly focus entirely on your work. Request that people don’t interrupt you when working on a big project. If you are required to answer phones and drop-in’s immediately, schedule work when the office is less busy. 2) Structure Your Environment The place you work can have an impact on your ability to focus. Try to locate yourself so you are facing potential distractions such as doors, phones or windows. This way you can take a glance to assess sounds that would otherwise break your focus. 3) Clarify Objectives Know what your goal is clearly before you start. If you aren’t sure what the end result is, the confusion will make it impossible to focus. 4) Divide Blobs. If you have a large project that needs work, clearly identify a path that you will use to get started working on it. If the sequence of actions isn’t obvious, it will be difficult to concentrate. Taking a few minutes to plan not only your end result, but the order you will complete any steps, can save hours in wasted thinking. 5) Know the Rules Get clear on what the guidelines are for the task ahead. What level of quality do you need? What standards do you need to follow? What constraints are there? If the rules aren’t clear from the outset, you will slip out of concentration as you ponder them later. 6) Set a Deadline Deadlines have both advantages and disadvantages when trying to force concentration. A deadline can make it easier to forget the non-essential and speed up your working time. If you give yourself only an hour to design a logo, you will keep it simple and avoid fiddling with extravagant designs. Time limits have disadvantages when they cause you to worry about the time you have left instead of the task itself. 7) Break down Roadblocks Roadblocks occur whenever you hit a tricky problem in your work. This can happen when you run out of ideas or your focus wavers. Break down roadblocks by brainstorming or planning on a piece of paper. Writing out your thought processes can keep you focused even if you might become frustrated. 8) Isolate Yourself Become a hermit and stay away from other people if you want to get work done. Unless your work is based on other people they will only break your focus. Create a private space and refuse to talk to anyone until your work is finished. Put a sign on your door to steer away drop-ins and don’t answer your phone. 9) Healthy Body, Sharper Mind What you put into your body affects the way you concentrate. Nobody would expect peak performance if they showed up drunk to work. But if you allow yourself to get chronic sleep deprivation, overuse stimulants like caffeine or eat dense, fatty foods your concentration will suffer. Try to cut out one of your unhealthy habits for just thirty days to see if there is a difference in your energy levels. I’ve found even small steps can create dramatic changes in my ability to focus. 10) Be Patient Before I write an article, I often sit at my desk for a fifteen or twenty minutes before I put finger on the keyboard. During this time I feel a strong urge to leave or do something else. But I know that if I am patient, I’ll stumble upon an idea to write about and enter a state of flow. Without a little patience, you can’t take advantage of flow when it rushed through you. If you need strong concentration I recommend periods of 90-120 minutes. Any less than that and you will waste too much time getting started before the flow can continue. More than this is possible to sustain focus, but you will probably benefit from a quick break. These are the general guidelines for concentration, studying well or doing your job. Regards.

Hi. I am a mother of 14 months old baby boy. I happened to leave my baby with my parents and my husband at home and shift to Delhi. Yes, I wanted to focus, concentrate on studies, reach my goal, dream also wanted to take coaching classes after my career break for 4 and half years, so have left my baby yesterday with his grand parents and dad. How could he (baby) take me as I am not going to meet him for another 8-9 months? Will he remember me? What should I do? I mean should I stay in contact with him through video calls and occasional visit? What are the effects on him, if I do this and don't do this? And also what else I should do?

P G In Counselling & Psychotherapy, MBA

Hello lybrate-user Though you have not contacted me before taking this important decision of your life. I understand you want to reach your goals and must have done after loads of thinking. Being a child psychologist, this is very crucial time for a kid, in toilet training, language development and social & emotional upbringing. Rather, now keep track of your child's growth with video calls, meeting him often. But keep it upto yourself not to become emotional weak bfr others including child, not to criticize his caretakers etc.
