How To Overcome Childhood Obesity?

Childhood obesity is a serious condition plaguing many adolescents and children these days. Obesity brings along with it a plethora of health scares such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, all of which at a point of time were confined only to adults. Obesity in children also results in depression and self-esteem issues. Too much of calorie consumption accompanied by a sedentary lifestyle and other hormonal or genetic factors contribute to obesity in children.

Overcoming childhood obesity-

  1. Healthy eating: Consider opting for vegetables and fruits over high-calorie and fatty foods such as crackers, cookies or other processed foods. Cut out on the intake of sweetened beverages that makes your child too full to grab other healthy foods. Encourage sitting together for a family meal and initiating interaction rather than turning on the TV or other electronic gadgets. Allow your child to decide his/her proportion of food and never over feed. This habit should be inculcated in the child since the formative years.

  2. Engaging in physical activity: Make sure and talk your child into not spending more than two hours sitting glued to the TV set or the computer on a daily basis. Rather, egg him/her on to go out in the open and enjoy the day underneath the sun. Try and start building in your child the habits of exercising and staying active right from the beginning. This will go a long way in deciding your child’s health and overall fitness in the future. Remember! Morning shows the day. And it’s up to you to structure out your child’s ‘morning’.

Quick tips for Parents-

Encourage:

  1. Play time or physical activities in ways that your child enjoys, such as going for a walk or hike, playing at the park, playing sports, dancing or going for a bike ride (and join them!)

  2. Healthy home-packed lunches

  3. Drinking more water and eating whole vegetables

  4. Eating when you are truly hungry, not when you’re bored, mad, stressed, etc.

  5. Eating together as a family

  6. Decreased meal sizes

  7. Focus on health rather than taste

Discourage:

  1. Too much screen time

  2. Eating while watching TV or other screens

  3. Eating out

  4. Negative food cues and triggers by removing them

  5. Skipping meals if you are hungry

  6. Eating if you are not hungry

  7. Eating by the clock (you should eat when you’re truly hungry)

  8. Too much sugary drinks (sodas and fruit drinks)

During pregnancy, it is essential to have a wholesome nutrition to ensure the growing baby receives a wholesome nutrition too. Almost every person salivates over desserts and sweets. One does not need a special occasion to get their sweet tooth going. While the lip smacking sugary delight might impress the taste buds, it is sure to affect the health in a big way. If you thought that sugar was only bad for your waistline and general health, then you need to know that it is equally harmful for your skin. In fact, it can lead to serious dermatological conditions.

Harmful effects of sugar on the skin

A lot of what we eat reflects on our body externally. A number of internal changes can influence the external appearance of the body. Excessive intake of carbohydrates, starch and sugar can have an adverse effect on the skin. It can also accelerate the ageing process. But what triggers these complications needs to be understood and discussed in detail.

Carbohydrates can be simple or complex. Simple carbohydrates (cake, bread; to name a few) break down and convert to glucose rapidly. Increased glucose level implies increased insulin level, and causes inflammation, which affects the whole body. The enzymes produced during inflammation breaks down important proteins, namely elastin and collagen, leading to wrinkles and saggy skin.

Acne problems mainly arise from Glycation (the process through which digested sugar attaches permanently to the collagen). Glycation plays a significant role in accelerating the ageing process.

Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, is good for health. When ingested, complex carbohydrates break down at a much slower rate. As a result, there is no abnormal increase in the insulin level.

Corrective measures to check the harmful effects of sugar on the skin:

With a little care and preventive measures, the deleterious effects of sugar on the skin can be minimised.

  1. Supplement your diet with foods rich in antioxidants. Lean proteins, fibrous foods and diets rich in good fats are highly recommended. Include beans and nuts that have low glycemic value in your diet. Drink plenty of water.

Sore Throat and Strep Throat - Are They Same?

Throat pain mainly occurs due to two conditions-'sore throat' or 'strep throat'. Often the terms 'sore throat' and 'strep throat' are used interchangeably, but they don't indicate the same thing. While a sore throat is a condition mostly followed by common cold, runny nose or congestion; strep throat is a bacteria-induced infection. The bacterium called Streptococcus is responsible for strep throat.

The most common reason behind a sore throat is a viral infection like flu or cold. So, if you've a sore throat that is caused by virus, there is no reason to worry as it can be treated easily. But if you are suffering from strep throat or streptococcal infection, then antibiotic drugs for additional treatment will be required to avoid complications.

Signs and symptoms of a strep throat (which indicates that your throat pain is serious and needs attention) include:

  • Pain while swallowing food
  • Sore throat which usually persists for more than 48 hours
  • Small red spots at the roof top of your mouth
  • Swollen and red tonsils at times with streaks of pus or white patches
  • Fever
  • Swollen, benign lymph nodes in your neck
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Body aches
  • Vomiting or feeling of nausea, especially amongst younger children

When these signs and symptoms become noticeable, you need to promptly visit your doctor for test and treatment. And, if the reports indicate strep throat, then your doctor will prescribe you some oral antibiotics to reduce the complications and severity of symptoms so that it doesn't spread to others. You are advised to follow your prescription properly and stay indoors for at least a day after starting your medication.

OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder is a mental condition, which traps people in a cycle of repetitive thoughts that push them to do repetitive behaviors. As the name states, the obsession over certain things compels them to do it over and over again. These actions will only help you feel relieved for a short time and soon the cycle starts back again.

Symptoms of OCD

The symptoms of OCD are classified into two groups, one for the obsessive behavior and the other for compulsive behavior. Some of the common symptoms for these are mentioned below:

Obsessive behaviors

As the name states this means obsessing over certain things, which varies from person to person. Some of the things could be:

  1. Being scared about making mistakes.
  2. The fear of being embarrassed in public situations.
  3. Constantly being scared about contamination by germs, microbes or dirt.
  4. Doubts about sure and simple situations and the need to be constantly reassured about them.

Compulsive behaviors

The obsessions usually results in compulsive behaviors, which you may need to perform to reassure and relieve yourself of the anxiety temporarily. Some of these may include:

  1. Trying to constantly arrange things in a certain way and still not being satisfied.
  2. Thoughts, words and images being stuck in your head throughout the day that may keep you disturbed and cause to lose sleep.

Causes of OCD

Biological factors: Certain chemical imbalances in the brain may lead to OCD, which may happen due to hormonal or biological changes. In fact certain infections are also known to trigger OCD in people.

Environmental factors: Certain types of mental trauma have been known to trigger OCD as well, such as

  1. Office, school, college or other work related stresses over a long period of time.
  2. The passing away of a near and dear one.
  3. Relationship problems.
  4. Repressed abuses from earlier in life.

Treatments

Most treatments of OCD are categorized into two types:

  1. Cognitive behavioral therapy: This is a counseling based therapy where you may be slowly asked to face your fears and overcome them over a period of time.
  2. Medications: Antidepressants, inhibitors, or antipsychotic drugs or relaxants in various combinations may be used to treat OCD.
  3. Electroconvulsive therapy: Only in the rarest of cases would doctors consider electroconvulsive therapy, if the patient is a danger to themselves or others around them.

It will help you 1 the better option is to relax your mind and to increase timing you can do kegel's exercise also try the stop/start method 2 increase the amount of time spent during foreplay. Make sure the genitals are not rubbed against the other's body or on the bed as this might also lead to ejaculation 3. Use a condom preferably a thick one or extra time its easily available in market. This will reduce the sensitivity of the penis. Many factors are involved in the process of hair loss like Tension or stress, chemical damage, nutritional deficiency, enviornmental factors, unadequate sleep or diet etc. A careful analysis of the person is required to initiate the treatment From Home remedy part you can use following: Take 100 ml coconut oil boil 2-4 pcs of amla fruit n 8-10 curry leaves in that oil till fruit n leaves turn black. Filter and strain. Massage it on scalp with finger tips gently. Wash hair next morning with curd mixed with besan. In ready to use you can start using rishi grow hair oil at bed time wash with robin plus herbal shampoo. Clean oil is recommended if dandruff is the reason as this oil treats it in just two applications along with reducing itching. Internal ayurvedic medicines can be provided after studying your bodily constitution as per ayurveda. This process should be continued for two months and your hair fall will reduce to normal. As it's a very slow process so you can't see results in a week. Eat more of green leafy vegies and fresh seasonal fruits. Take amla powder or amla murabba/ carrot murabba twice daily. Use neem wood comb for managing hair and this should be changed regularly. Reduce your stress by yoga, Pranayam and meditation. Add some coconut daily in your diet. Dear lybrate user, please don't worry. Every thing in your child case is normal. Nothing is serious. The teeth which were brocken and when she was 1.5 years of age was deciduous teeth. Eruption time of permanent central incisor is 7 to 8 years. Your child is only 6.5 years right now. Please wait her permanent central incisor will be erupted within 1 to 1.5 years. *for your satisfaction, if you want. You can go to dentist and take IOPA of those area where teeth were fall at the age of her 1.5 years. You will see her growing permanent teeth which are present in the bone.

Marking off the minutes only heightens your distress about being awake. 2. Try relaxing your body to fall asleep. Working from your toes to your forehead, tightly tense each muscle group for five seconds, then relax. 3. Find an uninteresting activity. Read something uninteresting. Listen to relaxing music. When you start to feel drowsy, go back to bed. 4. Create a consistent sleeping and waking schedule — even on the weekends and days off work. “What works best is going to bed at the same time and waking up at same time every day 5. Avoid consuming drinks or food with caffeine before bedtime. Abstain from caffeine for at least five to six hours before you plan to retire 6. Make your sleeping environment comfortable.
