Back Pain - 3 Ways To Prevent It!

Back pain is one of the most common debilitating disorder in the world today. The pain affects 90% of people at some point of their lives. Human back comprises of various structures (see figure) which are nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, any or all of which can be a source of pain. Once back pain occurs, it may become chronic (more than 4 weeks) and you shall need to consult a pain physician for relief and accurate diagnosis.

Since prevention is always better than cure,  you can save yourself from having back pain if you follow these basic tips:

  1. Regular Exercise in Correct Form: Regular exercise is important to maintain proper muscular strength of the back. Human back is supported by several big muscle groups (see figure). They serve two functions - one is to facilitate the posture and movements of the back itself and the other is to help movements of the rest of the body appendages (arms, head, pelvis and legs).The health of these muscle group is important to take stress off the spinal bones and maintain proper function. Most of these muscles are red muscle fibers as they need to maintain their activity for prolonged periods of time. Just to give you an idea - your biceps (arm muscles) have to work only when you bend your arm. But your back muscles have to function all the time - whether you sit, walk, stand or even sleep. But the point is what kind of exercises are good for your back? The best exercises for back include body weight low impact aerobics like brisk walking, swimming, stationary bicycling, extension exercises and yoga. What is important to remember while doing these exercises if that you need to be gentle in your movements and achieve correct "form" - this is possible if you can ask someone (preferably a trainer) to observe and point out whether the back stays straight during the exercise. It has been seen that arching and excessive bending is associated with injury to the back while exercising.

  2. Stay Hydrated and Eat Natural Nutritious diet:The inter vertebral discs contain 70 - 80% water. The muscles and tissues have 60% water content. Therefore, it is important to stay hydrated. In addition, you must eat a nutritious diet consisting of green leafy vegetables, good protein source and just enough carbohydrates. Deficiencies of essential nutrients like Vitamin D can result in diseases like osteoporosis. Another important aspect is to maintain body weight within healthy limits. This is very important as increased belly fat is linked to increased back pain due to mechanical factors.

  3. Lift objects correctly and maintain proper posture: While lifting objects, keep them as close to body as possible. Do not slouch or bend excessively while lifting. Just keep your back straight at all times. You may bend your knees a little if required (see figure). Think before you lift and get help if needed.

While working, you must not sit for more than 45 minutes at a stretch. Walk for two minutes, go to a colleague's desk and say hi or even just drink some water or visit the washroom. Humans evolved as hunter - gatherers and our bodies are more adapted to walking / standing than to sitting for prolonged periods. Those of you who travel more and have to sit for long periods of time also need to follow above tips - avoid prolonged sitting in same posture.While exercising, improper position can do more harm than good. Therefore, proper form and posture is a must.

Bonus tip: Avoid cigarette smoking and those who smoke cigarettes to decrease your chances of having degenerative disc diseases leading to chronic back pain early in life.

The usual cause of low back pain is the sedentary lifestyle that we lead these days. There is hardly any movement. We remain seated most of the time and stand for very short periods of time. She most probably may be having arthritis. Start her on exercises and see if pain does not subside she can use a knee brace and walk still not subsiding the may be she will benefit with a total knee replacement.

A stinging pain in the neck that makes you feel broken from the neck joint could be a reason to worry. It is often accompanied by an aching head or a throbbing shoulder joint. Neck pain, such as this occurs due to an injury in the area resulting from sudden back and forth movement of the neck. It is referred to as whiplash as the nature of the pain and subsequent discomfort resembles the snapping of a whip. The pain is more like a sprain, but not exactly so. This can affect athletes or even any person in general who has faced an accident in recent past. Whiplash is characterized by a tearing of ligaments and tendons that connect one bone to another.

Causes of Whiplash:

  1. Sports that involve contact: Any extracurricular activity involving collisions or other forms of physical contact can cause neck injuries. Football and rugby players frequently suffer from Whiplash.
  2. Road accidents: Public transport has a host of disadvantages. Reckless driving can make the tendons of your neck tear. Auto accidents cause immense strain on your neck; it can also lead to Whiplash.
  3. Any kind of physical abuse: If you have gotten into a violent fight with someone your neck could suffer from a Whiplash. Instances of physical abuse where the neck is jerked or punched at can also result in neck strains. Domestic violence often leads to instances of neck strains.

Symptoms related to this condition:

  1. You may or may not suffer from tinnitus. Tinnitus is a physical disorder where you hear ringing sounds. It is quite distracting.
  2. Your vision might get blurry.
  3. You can experience irregular sleep patterns.
  4. You can find it hard to concentrate on any one thing for more than a while.
  5. You can grow irritable at the drop of a hat.
  6. Your memory may fail you. You might find it next to impossible to trace back a day's activity.

Some of the other direct symptoms are:

  1. Your neck might turn stiff preventing you from moving it left, right, up or down.
  2. Pangs of pain can be felt in and around your shoulders.
  3. Your upper arms can grow numb and tender.
  4. Your head can spin repeatedly or you could feel dizzy.

My problem is recently I have started playing badminton due to which I have pain in my right arm surrounding elbow. I have taken pain killer as well as anti inflammatory meds but with little relief. My friend who is a doctor but a gym, has doubt of me having tennis elbow. Now I have stopped playing badminton altogether and have some relief in pain but not completely. Please suggest some remedy.

Hello. Thank you for contacting. Playing any sport is good for health. Every sport need some preparatory exercises called warm up. This includes stretching and strengthening exercises. Prior playing do some stretching of forearm, and triceps, deltoid. It may be tennis elbow. Visit a physiotherapist. Very effective treatment is available in physiotherapy. Stay hydrated. Apply hot bag. Take rest and drink lots of water. Painkillers and pain relieving gel will help. The pain should be controlled in a week's time. In case it still persists you may need to visit an orthopaedic surgeon.

This happens because your muscles have poor tolerance to cold. Likely cause is vitamin B12 and D3 and calcium deficiency. Get these tested. Drinking lemonade helps to recover from acute cramps in the leg.

How To Prevent Blood Clots In The Legs?

A blood clot in the leg is termed as Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT. This blood clot can be fatal, because it usually blocks the passage of blood to the heart by damaging the one way valves of the veins. This can also reach other organs like the lungs, in which situation the case becomes complicated and may also lead to death. There are various ways of preventing the onset of these clots. Follow these points to know more.

  1. Blood Thinners: Prolonged hospital stay and a major surgery like joint replacement can lead to blood clots in the legs or DVT. Therefore, it is imperative to ask your doctor about a prescription for blood thinners, which can help in better blood flow despite minimal motion in the legs or stiffness. 
  2. Compressions Stockings: If you have been in the hospital for a prolonged period or suffering from leg paralysis, then the risk of blood clots is greater than most others. You can make use of compression stockings, which will help in preventing clots by holding the area tight so that the blood is forced to pump and flow. These should be used every time you are admitted to the hospital. 
  3. Exercise: It is important to keep moving in case you are travelling in a long flight that is over four hours long. Also, you can try certain mild exercises, in case you have a long standing condition of pain or cramping in the leg muscles and joints. From simple toe flexes to muscle strengthening exercises like the heel or towel hook, you can ensure that the tightening action makes your muscle firm so that the blood clots do not have a chance to form. You may also need to lose weight in case you are overweight so that you can alleviate the risk of these clots.
  4. Water: Staying hydrated is something that we all need to follow in any case, but it is especially important if you are risk of developing blood clots in the legs. Drinking plenty of fluids is a natural way of thinning the blood, especially if you have been in bed or travelling for prolonged periods. 
  5. Loose Fitting Clothing: You may want to wear loose fitting clothing when you are travelling or in the hospital so that you do not end up unnecessarily compressing an area in a way that will be detrimental for the blood flow there. Wearing loose clothing ensures that the blood flow carries on as per its normal routine without any blockages.

It is important to remember the above points so that you keep blood clots in the legs at bay.

Dear sir Upper limb fracture healing usually takes 4to6 weeks So you need not worry it will go .u can still take precautions by by lifting weights from this side, jerky movement to be avoided n don't sleep on this side Take calcium rich source for better healing.

My mother (Age 51, weight 69 kg) has osteoarthritis and the synovial fluid of the right knee (Arthritis grade 4) is nearly gone but the bones of the left leg started to bend and paining more severe from 2 month on wards. And BMD results shows osteoporosis (T-Score = -4.06) (Z Score = -2.63) but uric acid (3.7 mg/dL) and serum calcium is normal. She also has mild diabetes and High BP (140/80). Should we go for the knee replacement surgery or is there any alternative ayurvedic treatment of it? And Can knee replacement surgery successful in osteoporosis bones?

Hi dear, To know whether knee replacement would be successful or not for your mother, you need to get some set of physical tests done for her by a good Physiotherapists. There are no of conditions responsible for final outcome of knee replacement- 1- Muscular strength of legs before surgery 2- Clinical condition of joint 3- Metabolic disorders of patient 4- Post operative care and Strengthning of the replaced joint as well as entire limb Whether other alternative treatment will work for your mother, can be said only after examining her. 1.Take good nourishing diet with plenty of green leafy vegetables and, fruits 2.Drink plenty of water with electral/ORS powder 3.Take multi vitamin supplement like one capsule of polybion daily 3. Massaging cramped muscle, Take pain killer like one tablet of crocin pain relief sos after food up to a maximum of three tablets per day 4.Hot fomentation by heating pad, warm water bath 5. Stretching exercise etc 6. Take adequate rest, avoid over exertion and dehydration 7.Consult physician for further advice and treatment.

Her treatment depends on the amount of damage to the knee. Operation is a good option but is usually reserved as a last resort. She should get physiotherapy done. Also there are many chondro protective medicines which can help in reducing her pain. Knee replacement is considered when these methods fail to provide significant pain relief.

U do fully bad rest that problem is cervical spindles in case you do use heating paid in back nack side & some exercise also do it's batter you don't do heavy work you can go near a physiotherapist he/ she give you batter treatment OK.
