Celiac Disease And Diet

Celiac Disease And Diet

Celiac disease
Celiac disease (gluten-sensitive enteropathy), sometimes called sprue or coeliac, is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.
If you have celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine. Over time, this reaction damages your small intestine's lining and prevents absorption of some nutrients (malabsorption). The intestinal damage often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating and anemia, and can lead to serious complications cutting out gluten from diet and including healthy and delicious foods that are naturally gluten-free may help to improve its complications.

Foods such as meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, rice, and potatoes without additives or seasonings do not contain gluten and are part of a well-balanced diet
You can eat potato, rice, soy, amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, or bean flour instead of wheat flour.
You can eat gluten-free types of bread or pasta
Avoiding foods with gluten is critical in treating celiac disease. Removing gluten from your diet will improve symptoms, heal damage to your small intestine, and prevent further damage over time.

What's So Chocolatey About Chocolate?

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition

What's So Chocolatey About Chocolate?

Dark chocolate has got lots of health benefits.
- cocoa and dark chocolate have a wide variety of powerful antioxidants, way more than most other food
- the bioactive compounds in cocoa can improve blood flow in the arteries and cause a small but statistically significant decrease in blood pressure.
- dark chocolate improves several important risk factors for disease. It lowers the susceptibility of ldl to oxidative damage while increasing hdl and improving insulin sensitivity.
- studies show that the flavanols from cocoa can improve blood flow to the skin and protect it against sun-induced damage.

But of course, this doesn’t mean you should go all out and consume lots of chocolate every day. It is still loaded with calories and easy to overeat on. Maybe have a square after dinner and try to really savor them.

Be aware that a lot of the chocolate on the market is crap. You need to choose quality stuff… organic, dark chocolate with 70% or higher cocoa content.- shreni's diet clinic.

Whole Milk Vs Fat Free Milk - Which One Should You Drink?

Whole Milk Vs Fat Free Milk - Which One Should You Drink?

Milk is the only food item that works as a standalone meal in childhood and a nutritious beverage in adulthood. Be it a tall glass of plain milk or rich lattes, life is just incomplete without a splash of pristine goodness. These days, milk comes in varieties - full cream, single-toned, double-toned, skimmed milk, and what not!

Well, recent developments have shown that fat might not be as harmful as people originally thought it was. Fats can prove to be beneficial too. It is capable of providing the feeling of fullness as well as helps in absorbing vitamins that are fat-soluble. According to research, people who consume full fat or whole milk are on equal terms with people who consumed fat-free milk, as far as development of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease is concerned. However, when it comes to losing weight, whole milk i.e. full-fat milk should be preferred over fat-free milk.

  • Various surveys have reported that a majority of the people who consume whole milk exhibit less weight gain, lower body weights as well as low risks of obesity. The argument that excess calories are beneficial for the waistline is a topic that is prevalent even today. According to some researchers, as far as weight gain is concerned, all calories are not equal. Additionally, if the focus is solely on the number of calories per serving, then a huge factor leading to obesity is ignored.
  • This factor is called fullness. Dr. Mario Kratz, author of the aforementioned review and a designated nutrition scientist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, states that the removal of fatty acids from skimmed milk results in a delayed feeling of fullness as well as staying full. He also states that the fatty acids in milk affect hormone regulation and gene expression. In simpler words, these acids might crank up the amount of energy burned by the body as well as limit the storage of fat in the body.
  • All these findings help in showing that consumption of whole milk is preferable to low fat, as far as the risk of obesity is concerned. However, it does not mean that people should engage in consuming only whole milk and 'use butter in all the recipes'. However, as far as the comparison between skim i.e. fat-free milk and whole milk is concerned, the available research argues and suggests that full-fat milk is the way to go.

Hello Lybrate user, if you are putting efforts and even after religiously following your diet prescription for weight loss you are not getting results it may be due to hormonal disorder or stress, or due to some ongoing medicines, you can consult physician and get following tests done: 1) thyroid profile 2) vit d3 3) vit b12 please also make sure that you are taking adequate protein, water, and atleast 6-8 hrs of rest. It may also be due to water retention so keep a track on your salt intake or adjunts like pickle, papad etc.

Hypothyroidism: 5 Foods To Avoid

Hypothyroidism: 5 Foods To Avoid

The thyroid is a small gland located on the neck. When the thyroid gland functions normally, it is easy to ignore it but an underactive or overactive thyroid gland can cause a number of problems. An underactive thyroid gland is known as hypothyroidism. In this case, the gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This, in turn, lowers metabolism. Your diet plays a large role in influencing the functioning of the thyroid gland. Some of the foods you should avoid in cases of hypothyroidism are:

1. Cruciferous Vegetables
This includes vegetables such as cabbage, bok choi, kale, sprouts, and broccoli. These vegetables restrict the thyroid’s ability to absorb iodine which in turn lowers the functionality of the thyroid gland. While you do not need to completely avoid these vegetables, you should restrict their intake to less than 5 ounces each day. Cooking these vegetables can also help reduce their effect.

2. Soy
Soy products are rich in plant-based phytoestrogen. This hormone interferes with the body’s ability to use the thyroid hormone. It can worsen hypothyroidism and even increase the risk of hypothyroidism. However, this has not been scientifically proven and hence there are no specific dietary guidelines on how much should be eaten. To be on the safe side, consume soy products in moderation and avoid them whenever possible.

3. Fatty Foods
Hypothyroidism is yet another reason to avoid fatty foods. Fats interfere with the body’s ability to absorb thyroid hormone as well as thyroid hormone replacement drugs. It also lowers the production of thyroid hormone and thus aggravates hypothyroidism. Ideally, you should avoid fatty foods such as red meat, fatty fish, butter, mayonnaise etc. You should also avoid foods that are deep fried. Instead, try steaming or baking your food.

4. Sugar
Many dieticians refer to sugar as empty calories. These calories do not have any nutrients but can slow down the body’s metabolism rate. It also leads to weight gain that furthers aggravates hypothyroidism as well as other lifestyle disorders such as diabetes. Limit your sugar consumption to 1-2 spoons a day or try and eliminate it completely. You could also try replacing sugar with honey to sweeten your tea.

5. Excess Fiber
An excessive amount of anything including fiber can be detrimental to the body. Too much fiber can create complications in the treatment of hypothyroidism. Thus, you should not consume more than 35 grams of fiber a day. This can take the form of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and beans.

Diabetes & Fat Intake - How The Two Are Related?

Diabetes & Fat Intake - How The Two Are Related?

Diabetes is a condition that affects the pancreas to the extent that they do not release the required quantity of insulin which can lead to a high blood sugar level as the body starts to absorb excess glucose from the food that it ingests. This can be of various types and have different implications for different patients. While many experts insist that keeping a low cholesterol level and low weight is a primary requirement for treatment of diabetes patients, there are a number of myths in this regard. Not eating fat is one such myth that we are out to prove wrong today.

So read on to find out why diabetic people need to eat fat.

  1. Saturated Fats and Trans Fats: There are studies that demonstrate how saturated fats can actually prove to be beneficial for diabetes patients. These can be found in various sources like fish and nuts. This releases heptadecanoic acids which can normalise the blood sugar levels as well as the insulin and triglyceride levels in the body.
  2. Dairy Fat: The use of milk and yogurt as well as butter can actually be help in bringing the blood sugar levels down. It also shows up favourably on the lipoprotein markers. Butter, in particular is known to have clarifying properties that can bring down the risk of diabetes as well. One must take care to use dairy products that are fat free.
  3. Animal Fat: Having meat which releases fat and having dairy products like cheese and milk which releases healthy saturated fats are two different things. One can replace carbs and meat with these kinds of products so that there is better absorption and creation of quality animal fats which can actually help the insulin levels.
  4. Mono saturated and Poly saturated Fats: Food items like fish and nuts that carry high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids as well as mono saturated and poly saturated fats can help patients suffering from diabetes by clearing the bloodstream of cholesterol and high lipid levels. This also prevents the risk of heart disease and arterial blockages. These kinds of fats are also found in flax seeds, soya products and walnuts

Going low on carbohydrates and avoiding sugar is usually recommended for patients suffering from diabetes. Yet, it is important to have your fill of essential fats as mentioned above with the help of dairy products, clarified better, omega three fatty acids, dry fruits, soya products and some amount of vegetable oils, as these actually have a number of benefits for these patients. These kinds of fats are not known to cause heart disease or high cholesterol

Navratri Diet - Natural Process to Cleanse Internally!

Navratri Diet - Natural Process to Cleanse Internally!

Detox and Cleanse are the two buzzing words in the health community for some time now. Navratri diet is essentially one of the native processes to cleanse our body internally. We can utilize our hands and soap to clear our skin, but for internal clearance, diet plans like Navratri are being used since ancient times. It works in very simple terms. As our body needs energy all the times, if we stop or minimize intake of food in any form, the body’s internal metabolic system searches for any stored energy in the form of fat and converts it into energy. In this manner, we can gradually lose all the fat content within a span of 9 days of Navratri festival.

Navratri fasting – Doing it right
Proper fasting techniques help us to set us back on track when it comes to good health. But unhealthy practices such as consuming deeply fried or sugary food during the festival period was not an ancient process but which somehow developed along the way and hence should be avoided. Going salt-free and including fruits and vegetables in our diet help our bodies pass this time with ease. A Navratri diet plan was actually made to detoxify our body.

Incorporating Variety of Grains: Amaranth, Chestnuts, and Samak are equivalent to cereal and are rich in proteins and carbohydrates. Recently scientists have found that these pseudo-cereals have high nutritional content as compared to wheat. They are also the best sources of minerals and vitamins and free from gluten. The practice of including such foods with us in the past which might have been lost as we evolved and the festive occasion is a good opportunity to bring about the change.

Similarly, khichdi made from Kuttu also serves the need of a balanced diet with proper carbohydrate minerals and other vitamins. It's effortless to cook which helps to make time for celebration as well. Chapati made up of Kuttu is also a great option for those who prefer parathas and puris.

The potato which is also a rich source of carbohydrate in a baked form can suit the need of Navaratri diet plans. Sabudana, either as Khichdi or mixed with milk not only enhances the taste buds but also provides quality nutrition. It's better to have these alternate grains at regular intervals instead of an extended period of fast.

Drinking plenty of fluids: Plenty of fluids like water, buttermilk, fruit juice should be taken. Lime diluted with warm water helps to detoxify your body at faster levels. A variety of such foods should be eaten to satisfy the taste buds and providing proper nutrition to the body.

Hence, it would be good to incorporate such foods into the regular diet, even after the Navratri celebrations are over. It not only helps in minimizing weight but also to maintain it. This diet promotes digestion, improves energy, prevents diseases and fosters a feeling of lightness and well-being throughout the year and entire life. Celebrate the Navratri in a healthy way, not compromising the pomp and grandeur.

Tips To Prevent Overheating In Parties

Tips To Prevent Overheating In Parties

Strategies to prevent overeating at party meals

" once you arrive at the party, take in the food with your eyes first" pausing to survey the spread and thinking about which foods are your favorites and which foods just aren't worth it allows you to splurge selectively" tell yourself that you don't have to try one of everything.

Remember these tips during partying:

1. Load up on fruits and vegetables. They have more fiber and fewer calories so you can fill your plate, eat healthy, and satisfy your appetite.
2. Move away from the buffet. Fill a small plate with no more than two food items at once and then mingle.

3" hang out with the talkers, not the eaters" keep something in your hands, like a low-calorie drink, and avoid the temptation to grab appetizers as they pass by.
4. Don't deprive yourself completely. Allow yourself a few special holiday treats, but choose carefully. Think before you load your plate with holiday food.
5. Bypass most of the buffet and save your calories for the foods you really enjoy.
6. Prolong the moment. The longer you linger before indulging in your holiday food choices, the less likely you'll eat too much. Don't head straight to the front of the buffet line. If you're the first to eat, then you'll be finished before everyone else and more tempted to go back for seconds.
