Hypothyroidism: 5 Foods To Avoid

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition

Hypothyroidism: 5 Foods To Avoid

The thyroid is a small gland located on the neck. When the thyroid gland functions normally, it is easy to ignore it but an underactive or overactive thyroid gland can cause a number of problems. An underactive thyroid gland is known as hypothyroidism. In this case, the gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This, in turn, lowers metabolism. Your diet plays a large role in influencing the functioning of the thyroid gland. Some of the foods you should avoid in cases of hypothyroidism are:

Cruciferous Vegetables
This includes vegetables such as cabbage, bok choi, kale, sprouts, and broccoli. These vegetables restrict the thyroid’s ability to absorb iodine which in turn lowers the functionality of the thyroid gland. While you do not need to completely avoid these vegetables, you should restrict their intake to less than 5 ounces each day. Cooking these vegetables can also help reduce their effect.

Soy
Soy products are rich in plant-based phytoestrogen. This hormone interferes with the body’s ability to use the thyroid hormone. It can worsen hypothyroidism and even increase the risk of hypothyroidism. However, this has not been scientifically proven and hence there are no specific dietary guidelines on how much should be eaten. To be on the safe side, consume soy products in moderation and avoid them whenever possible.

Fatty Foods
Hypothyroidism is yet another reason to avoid fatty foods. Fats interfere with the body’s ability to absorb thyroid hormone as well as thyroid hormone replacement drugs. It also lowers the production of thyroid hormone and thus aggravates hypothyroidism. Ideally, you should avoid fatty foods such as red meat, fatty fish, butter, mayonnaise etc. You should also avoid foods that are deep fried. Instead, try steaming or baking your food.

Sugar
Many dieticians refer to sugar as empty calories. These calories do not have any nutrients but can slow down the body’s metabolism rate. It also leads to weight gain that furthers aggravates hypothyroidism as well as other lifestyle disorders such as diabetes. Limit your sugar consumption to 1-2 spoons a day or try and eliminate it completely. You could also try replacing sugar with honey to sweeten your tea.

Excess Fiber
An excessive amount of anything including fiber can be detrimental to the body. Too much fiber can create complications in the treatment of hypothyroidism. Thus, you should not consume more than 35 grams of fiber a day. This can take the form of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and beans.

Diabetes & Fat Intake - How The Two Are Related?

Diabetes & Fat Intake - How The Two Are Related?

Diabetes is a condition that affects the pancreas to the extent that they do not release the required quantity of insulin which can lead to a high blood sugar level as the body starts to absorb excess glucose from the food that it ingests. This can be of various types and have different implications for different patients. While many experts insist that keeping a low cholesterol level and low weight is a primary requirement for treatment of diabetes patients, there are a number of myths in this regard. Not eating fat is one such myth that we are out to prove wrong today.

So read on to find out why diabetic people need to eat fat.

  1. Saturated Fats and Trans Fats: There are studies that demonstrate how saturated fats can actually prove to be beneficial for diabetes patients. These can be found in various sources like fish and nuts. This releases heptadecanoic acids which can normalise the blood sugar levels as well as the insulin and triglyceride levels in the body.
  2. Dairy Fat: The use of milk and yogurt as well as butter can actually be help in bringing the blood sugar levels down. It also shows up favourably on the lipoprotein markers. Butter, in particular is known to have clarifying properties that can bring down the risk of diabetes as well. One must take care to use dairy products that are fat free.
  3. Animal Fat: Having meat which releases fat and having dairy products like cheese and milk which releases healthy saturated fats are two different things. One can replace carbs and meat with these kinds of products so that there is better absorption and creation of quality animal fats which can actually help the insulin levels.
  4. Mono saturated and Poly saturated Fats: Food items like fish and nuts that carry high levels of omega three fatty acids as well as mono saturated and poly saturated fats can help patients suffering from diabetes by clearing the bloodstream of cholesterol and high lipid levels. This also prevents the risk of heart disease and arterial blockages. These kinds of fats are also found in flax seeds, soya products and walnuts.

Going low on carbohydrates and avoiding sugar is usually recommended for patients suffering from diabetes. Yet, it is important to have your fill of essential fats as mentioned above with the help of dairy products, clarified better, omega three fatty acids, dry fruits, soya products and some amount of vegetable oils, as these actually have a number of benefits for these patients. These kinds of fats are not known to cause heart disease or high cholesterol.

Navratri Diet - Natural Process to Cleanse Internally!

Navratri Diet - Natural Process to Cleanse Internally!

Detox and Cleanse are the two buzzing words in the health community for some time now. Navratri diet is essentially one of the native processes to cleanse our body internally. We can utilize our hands and soap to clear our skin, but for internal clearance, diet plans like Navratri are being used since ancient times. It works in very simple terms. As our body needs energy all the times, if we stop or minimize intake of food in any form, the body’s internal metabolic system searches for any stored energy in the form of fat and converts it into energy. In this manner, we can gradually lose all the fat content within a span of 9 days of Navratri festival.

Navratri fasting – Doing it right
Proper fasting techniques help us to set us back on track when it comes to good health. But unhealthy practices such as consuming deeply fried or sugary food during the festival period was not an ancient process but which somehow developed along the way and hence should be avoided. Going salt-free and including fruits and vegetables in our diet help our bodies pass this time with ease. A Navratri diet plan was actually made to detoxify our body.

Incorporating Variety of Grains: Amaranth, Chestnuts, and Samak are equivalent to cereal and are rich in proteins and carbohydrates. Recently scientists have found that these pseudo-cereals have high nutritional content as compared to wheat. They are also the best sources of minerals and vitamins and free from gluten. The practice of including such foods with us in the past which might have been lost as we evolved and the festive occasion is a good opportunity to bring about the change.

Similarly, khichdi made from Kuttu also serves the need of a balanced diet with proper carbohydrate minerals and other vitamins. It's effortless to cook which helps to make time for celebration as well. Chapati made up of Kuttu is also a great option for those who prefer parathas and puris.

The potato which is also a rich source of carbohydrate in a baked form can suit the need of Navaratri diet plans. Sabudana, either as Khichdi or mixed with milk not only enhances the taste buds but also provides quality nutrition. It's better to have these alternate grains at regular intervals instead of an extended period of fast.

Drinking plenty of fluids: Plenty of fluids like water, buttermilk, fruit juice should be taken. Lime diluted with warm water helps to detoxify your body at faster levels. A variety of such foods should be eaten to satisfy the taste buds and providing proper nutrition to the body.

Hence, it would be good to incorporate such foods into the regular diet, even after the Navratri celebrations are over. It not only helps in minimizing weight but also to maintain it. This diet promotes digestion, improves energy, prevents diseases and fosters a feeling of lightness and well-being throughout the year and entire life. Celebrate the Navratri in a healthy way, not compromising the pomp and grandeur.

Tips To Prevent Overheating In Parties

Strategies to prevent overeating at party meals

" once you arrive at the party, take in the food with your eyes first" pausing to survey the spread and thinking about which foods are your favorites and which foods just aren't worth it allows you to splurge selectively" tell yourself that you don't have to try one of everything.

Remember these tips during partying:

1. Load up on fruits and vegetables. They have more fiber and fewer calories so you can fill your plate, eat healthy, and satisfy your appetite.
2. Move away from the buffet. Fill a small plate with no more than two food items at once and then mingle.
3" hang out with the talkers, not the eaters" keep something in your hands, like a low-calorie drink, and avoid the temptation to grab appetizers as they pass by.
4. Don't deprive yourself completely. Allow yourself a few special holiday treats, but choose carefully. Think before you load your plate with holiday food.
5. Bypass most of the buffet and save your calories for the foods you really enjoy.
6. Prolong the moment. The longer you linger before indulging in your holiday food choices, the less likely you'll eat too much. Don't head straight to the front of the buffet line. If you're the first to eat, then you'll be finished before everyone else and more tempted to go back for seconds.

Hello lybrate user, there are lots of causes of your concern but I feel it might be due to electrolyte imbalances in your blood (such as sodium or potassium) but do consult physician for any other medical issue. Limit or stop using caffeine. Some people are sensitive to caffeine and may notice more symptoms when using caffeine products (such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, and some over-the-counter medications). If you smoke, stop smoking. Limit your intake of alcohol. If not hypertensive can have lemon juice with sugar and salt or water with glucose and electoral powder once or twice a day depending upon the severity.

TIPS TO OVERCOME ABDOMINAL OBESITY...

TIPS TO OVERCOME ABDOMINAL OBESITY...

Tips to overcome abdominal obesity

1) Eat breakfast

It might seem counterproductive to eat if you're trying to lose weight, but studies show that eating breakfast within an hour of waking up keeps your insulin levels steadier and your LDL cholesterol levels lower

2) Take at least 7 hrs of sound sleep
Research indicates that the secretion of cortisol (a hormone your body produces during times of stress) is correlated with an increase in belly fat.

3) Aim to take 10, 000 steps a day
In one study where men reduced their daily steps from about 10, 000 to less than 1, 500 (without changing their diet), their visceral (belly) fat increased by 7% after just 2 weeks

4) Switch out refined grains for whole grains
In a scientific study, people who ate all whole grains (in addition to five servings of fruits and vegetables, three servings of low-fat dairy, and two servings of lean meat, fish, or poultry) lost more belly fat than another group that ate the same diet, but with all refined grains

5) Drink plenty of water
Studies suggest that consistently drinking water throughout the day can lead to a more active metabolism, regardless of dieting

6) Eat good fats
Studies suggest that a diet with a higher ratio of monounsaturated fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, soybeans, and chocolate - can prevent the accumulation of belly fat

7) Avoid trans fats (in margarine, crackers, cookies, or anything made with partially hydrogenated oils)
Seem to result in more fat being deposited in the abdomen.

8) Eat more of soluble fiber (such as that found in apples, oats, and cherries)
Lowers insulin levels which can speed up the burning of visceral belly fat.

Eat healthy foods. Drink plenty of water and start exercising to get amazing results.

Before 8 month ago my weight is 55kg suddenly my weight is automatically loss now I am 45kg what the cause of it?
Dear Lybrate user. Weight loss may occur following a loss of appetite or even when you’re consuming the same amount of calories as usual. Either way, it’s usually a cause for concern. Common causes of unintentional weight loss include depression, diarrhea, oral ulcers, and viral infections, such as the common cold, that can affect appetite. Other, less common causes of unintentional weight loss include cancer, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), abdominal infection, gastroenteritis, dementia, celiac disease, and HIV or AIDS. Consult with your physician to find the exact cause and get treated accordingly.

Dear Lybrate user, Depending on the severity of the disease development, one of the primary methods of treating this disease is to change some lifestyle and food habits. Before making any changes, however, it is important that you speak with your doctor about your concerns and plans. Following are few guidelines that will help you out 1. Avoid Salty Foods At All Costs. Salt naturally enhances the thirst that someone has. It creates an instant sensation of being thirsty that will cause more fluids to be consumed then are actually necessary. Any foods with added sodium should be instantly off-limits. This means eliminating fast foods, salted snacks like peanuts and pretzels, and certain grocery items, like soy sauce. 2. Stop Using Caffeinated Products Whenever Possible. Some diuretics are effectively used to treat diabetes insipidus, but caffeine is not one of them. When following this diet plan, it is important to remove most caffeine sources from the diet immediately. Caffeine will cause the kidneys to extract more water from the body. Look for caffeine in these specific items. 3. Processed Foods Must Be Avoided At All Costs. Processed food might be cheaper than fresh food, but it also contains a number of preservatives that can worsen the signs and symptoms of diabetes insipidus. This would include processed cheeses, meats, breads, and boxed foods. The primary issue here is that many processed foods contain high levels of sodium to help preserve them. 4. Reduce The Amount Of Protein That Is Being Consumed. Proteins will also help to encourage the body to create more urine, which is why limiting them is a good idea. Fish, eggs, and even poultry should all be avoided in excess amounts. Even legumes and nuts that are protein-rich should be avoided. You’ll still need to consume protein in your diet to stay healthy, but keep it to recommended levels and avoid excess consumption to promote better health. 5. Water-Based Foods May Be Beneficial. Because the fluids of the body need to be continually replaced. Foods that are rich in water may be recommended as a way to avoid drinking more fluids. Melons, fruits, and certain vegetables all have high water content in them with the vitamins and minerals the body needs. ALL THE VERY BEST.
