Acne is not a harmful or a dangerous condition, but is usually a cosmetic problem and may also sometimes be a symptom of underlying conditions.
So what kind of skin care regimen can you have in order to prevent acne? Read on to know more:
- Makeup: If your skin is acne prone, you can use non oily makeup or avoid it on a daily basis, if you can. Non oily makeup does not irritate the sebaceous glands, which can end up secreting excessive oil leading to acne breakouts. Non oily makeup and skincare products are known as non-comedogenic, which do not clog the pores. Also, you must remember to remove your applied makeup carefully before you go to bed, so that the pores are clean and get a chance to breathe rather than getting infected. Further, your old makeup needs to be thrown out regularly even if the products do not come with an expiry date. Invest in new makeup every few months and clean your brushes regularly too.
- Cleaning Acne Prone Areas: You must wash the acne prone areas with soap and warm water at least twice a day. If your case has been very severe in the past, you can even use a medicated soap to wash the neck, shoulders and back as sometimes, acne spreads to these areas as well. Concentrate on the face and remember to clean it to remove dust, grime and other irritants that come from pollution. If this is not done on a regular basis, the particles can block the pores and lead to infection where the dead skin cells play a major role.
- Sweat: After a particularly intense workout session or after a run, you must remember to wash you face and take a shower so that the sweat and oil is can be removed, as these lead to breakouts if they are allowed to gather on the skin's surface and enter the pores. Taking care of your skin with a proper cleaning and hydrating routine is as important is getting the right nutrition as well. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.

I am a 23 years old female and I have dark complexed skin. My skin is too much sensitive for sun and it was allergic too! I was not dark complexed by birth. It may be due to highly sensitiveskin for sun. Now I want my natural complexion that I had by birth! What should I do?
Myth: Washing more helps get rid of acne.
Fact: Facial acne is not caused by dirt. The common misbelief is that pores are blocked from the top down due to the dirt, in actual fact pores are blocked from the inside out. Instead of preventing acne, washing your face too much may irritate the pores and cause them to become clogged as well as dry this skin. Dry skin will cause the sebaceous glands to go into overdrive and produce too much sebum oil which will block your pores. The best thing to do is only wash twice a day.
Myth: Acne is caused by stress.
Fact: It is true that stress may affect hormone levels and therefore cause acne. However, a good acne treatment system will easily overcome any effect stress may have on your acne. Some psychiatric medicines do list acne as a side effect, but stress in itself is unlikely to have a serious impact.
Myth: Sex and masturbation cause acne.
Fact: This is an idea dating back to the 17th century which was put about to try and dissuade young people from having sex before marriage. There is no scientific evidence to support it. It is true that high levels of androgens (male sex hormones) can be related to severe cases of acne but hormone levels are not affected by masturbation and sex.
Myth: The sun helps clear up acne.
Fact: It is true that 10 - 20 minutes a day of the sun could help people with acne, especially back acne or acne on other parts of the body. However, over exposure to the sun will lead to skin damage and irritate the skin. This irritation can actually result in more acne over the weeks that follow over exposure to the sun as the skin heals itself. As with over washing your skin, the sun will also dry out your skin which will result in an excess of sebum oil being produced and blocking your pores.
Myth: Your diet can cause acne
Fact: Here more research is needed. In short acne is caused by hormone levels rather than what you eat. However, it is known that in some societies, in stark contrast to modern society, there is absolutely no acne. This raises the question of whether it is the indigenous people's diet which contributes to their clear skin or some other factor. It may be possible to prevent acne through dietary means in the future, but it will be very hard to achieve.
Myth: Pimples will go away faster if you pop them.
Fact: Popping a pimple will make it temporarily less noticeable; however, it means that the zit will stay around for longer. By popping a pimple you are forcing bacteria from the zit further into the skin which ultimately makes it even more inflamed. Furthermore, popping a pimple can cause acne scars to form which could last for months or worse still scars in the form of dents and pits which can last forever.
