  1. People who suffer from arthritis are more likely to experience osteoarthritis symptoms. The intensity of the feeling of knee pain in winter is often linked to barometric pressure. In winter, there is a reduction in the pressure exerted by the air around us. This drop in pressure can cause the tissues around the joints to swell resulting in increased pain. The other possible cause of knee pain in winter can be explained from the influence of heat. Fluid in tissues becomes more viscous during winter. As a result of this increased viscosity, the elasticity of the muscles decreases, resulting in winter aches and pains. 

Some scientists believe that the higher pain intensity in winter is to be more of a psychological thing. Seasonal affective disorder is more during winter, and people suffering from mental depression seem to sense more pain during winter as the weather restricts outdoor activities. Improper intake of food also causes knee pain in winter due to undigested material. Even though winter arthritis is uncomfortable, the following tips help to make the joints work better and make you withstand the season easier.

Tips to Manage Joint Pain in Winters

  1. Physical activity in winter can reduce winter aches and pains and enhance overall health benefits. Low impact activities like aerobics, swimming in a heated pool, weight training, and riding a stationary bicycle can reduce stiffness, increase the blood flow, and support the knees. Thus, winter arthritis can be well managed by doing exercises.
  2. Diet also plays a vital role. Eating a balanced diet that comprised of low saturated fat, lean proteins, more fiber, and refined carbs helps to improve body functions during the winter. Drinking water throughout the day helps to reduce winter aches and pains. It is essential to consume easily digestible foods like vegetables. Consuming vegetables like carrots and cucumbers that have diuretic properties can help to eliminate waste products from the body.
  3. Vitamin D deficiency may worsen osteoarthritis. It is necessary to take a supplement vitamin D or ensure to make your diet is vitamin-D rich. Fish oil is a potent source of omega 3 fatty acids. Increase your intake of milk, a rich source of protein and calcium that help to strengthen the bones. Exposing the body to sunlight help to obtain vitamin D.
  4. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen can be used to reduce inflammation and pain. Injecting a viscous substance can decrease the friction of the bones and ease the condition.

Home Remedies for Knee Pain in Winters

  1. Wrap the inflamed knees with blanched cabbage leaves. This can cool down inflamed knees.  Aloe vera also helps to reduce inflammation.
  2. Comfrey (symphytum officinale) can act as an anti-inflammatory agent. Create a compress using mashed root or comfrey tea soaked bandages can also be used to reduce inflammation.
  3. Applying an ice-pack can help to reduce swelling and alleviate winter aches and pains. While applying ice-pack, ensure to cover the entire knee. Applying a bag of frozen peas to the area also works well. While using ice or heat therapy, make sure to do them carefully as over agressive and over doing it, can cause problems. 
  4. Steam therapy also helps to reduce pain in your knees. Soak your knee in a steaming hot water for 15 minutes. Applying hot water bag also can relieve knee pain in winter effectively.
  5. Winter aches and pains all over the body can be relieved by administrating massage therapy by a professional.
  6. Avoid applying strain or pressure on your knees. Take adequate amount of rest to reduce pain and swelling.

Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Back stretching- lie flat, pull one of the knee forward to chest, hold for 3 seconds, then bring the other knee forward to the chest and again hold for 3 seconds. Then pull both knees towards the chest and hold for 3 seconds. Repeat 10 times each exercise twice a day.

My MRI report says, Mild posterior broad base protrusion of L4-L5 intervertebral disc resultant mild central and lateral canal narrowing causing mild compression over thecal sac and right traversing L5 nerve root. I am doing bed rest from 10 days, what's the report says.

the report says that you have a disc prolapse and the disc is compressing one of the right nerve root. So if you have back and right leg pain then it would fit with your MRI findings. Absolute bed rest is not required for disc prolapse. as it is a mild prolapse there is a chance that the symptoms will improve with medications. avoid lifting heavy weight and reduce your body weight too

DEAR LYBRATE USER...A) apply paste of fresh lemon juice and garlic on scar,two times in a day...B) take 30 ml of triphala juice and 10 ml of honey early in the morning and at night before sleep….C) take 2-2 tablets of chandraprabha vati and sutshekhar rasa after meals...D) take 2 tablet of vasantkusumakar rasa early in the morning on empty stomach with triphala juice…...Do all these things for 15 days ..it gives you good result..consult to me for further suggestions..THANKS

Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain.

I am male 37 I can not use shampoo using bare hands coz then I feel burning in my hands and my hands get rough n skin feels cracked n peeling also sometimes happens. Tried using surgical gloves but that also did not suit my skin. So now I shampoo using polythene bag. Is it safe for hairs health or you suggest otherwise.

The best way stop using shampoos all are chemical based. So if possible you can use shikakai for your hair that will not spoil your hair and hands. If possible apply coconut oil mixed with turmeric and do a gentle massage for your hands.

Dear lybrate-user, check for your posture. Backache is aggravated with unsupported sitting for long hours, lifting a heavy backpack. Sit with a proper back support. Avoid bending forward and lifting heavy weights. Start taking hot water bag for relieving spasm and stiffness in the back muscles.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Shoulder pain could be due to many reasons like bursitis, tendinitis, capsular involvement, impingement etc. I would like to ask you regarding the onset of pain and cause of it? have you got any relevant investigations/treatment done for it till now? normally if there is no swelling or any other sign of inflammation, you can start with - physical therapy - anti inflammatory medicine for 7-10 days ice packs at home 3-4 times in a day - adequate calcium and vitamin d intake as per requirement. If your pain does not subside with this, then we will have to consider getting some tests like x ray to see joint degeneration, or maybe even mri of the affected shoulder. Hello, first of all you should know what is backache and by which factors it caused and aggravated. The usual cause of low back pain is the sedentary lifestyle that we lead these days. There is hardly any movement. walking, running and cycling like activities are also not a part of our daily routine. To add to it, our diet consists more and more of junk food. Fresh fruits, vegetables and high fibre foods are consumed less and less. These daily practices lead to obesity. The increased body weight puts lot of pressure on the spine which has to bear all the extra unwanted weight. The back muscles which are already weak due to lack of exercise and wrong posture are unable to cope with this increased load. This causes pain in the back muscles. Management for Back Pain:-Along with medicines for relieving pain, one needs to identify the cause and correct it. This may require some medicines or some correction in your posture or reducing weight or improving your lifestyle. At the same time, there is a need to work on the local muscle strengthening. Back muscles need to be strengthened so that they can bear the weight of the upper body. For this exercises of the back muscles are very helpful. Regular walking is also very helpful as it is a wholesome exercise of the body, improves blood circulation and helps lose weight. Tail bone pain also known as coccydynia is due to trauma or repeated microtrauma. Esp in people with prolonged sitting jobs. Dear lybrate user. You should use doughnut pillow (tyre tube line for sitting) and sitz bath daily. Follow these measures for 1 month. If no relief, then consult a pain physician where you might be advised ganglion impar block take care.

I have a hectic schedule where I have to leave for work in morning at 9: 30 am and come back home at 10: 00 pm in evening. Further I have to take out time in morning for studying for my course. I am unable to take out time as scheduled and usually sleep in morning, where its necessary for me to take out time every for studying. Should I take some supplements to make my body work the whole day. Please suggest some tips. Thank you.

At your age, this is a strenuous schedule and unless you take adequate rest you are likely to cause irreparable damage as time goes by. Just because you are young it does not mean that you can abuse your life/body to this extent. Your body needs periodic rest and that is better than taking any supplements to counter the damage. In fact, it will not do you any good even with supplements because you may not feel the immediate impact but over the long haul, the body will feel the strain. Instead, I suggest that you squeeze in short naps of 20 minutes, especially at noon times, you will affect some restoration. Supplements​ are good but not for this type of abuse.

Hi, when I stand even for 1 min am having heel pain I have consulted many doctor and also with that I get exhaust Now m taking treatment from one homoeopathy she told me to took x-ray and on that x-ray I found scratches like on bones is that mean I have low calcium is it a reason for heel pain and else every thing is normal from x-ray report What that scratches like things on bones means.

Hi Apply pranacharya restopain oil or prasarini oil on your affected part then give hot fomentation. Take maha rasnadi kwath 2-2 tsf twice a day. And agni tundi vati and maha yograj guggul 1-1 tab twice a day..

I have body aches, feeling tired and lazy. But from past almost one year I have mild leg pain, numbness in foot, legs and now in hands. My working profile bit standing and in 24 degree room temperature. My age is 32 and height 5. 5 inch, weight 71 kg. Last month' s my b12 test is ok. I am not having fever, headache, vomiting, loose motion and cough. 3 years back I done hepatitis b & c test and it was normal. I hv some protected intercourses in past. What for I m suffering. Did you get your calcium and vit. D and sugar levels checked? what was your b12 level? sometimes you can have these symptoms if you are low in vitamins and calcium. Also sometimes your metabolism is not adequate and you end up feeling tired. Drink plenty of water. Eat fresh fruits to get sufficient antioxidants. Do light exercises daily. Do not skip meals.
