Sir any side effect of laser eye operation like after this operation eyes will be normal ?
Few criteria must be fulfilled for you to undergo lasik surgery. Which are amount and type of refractive error, condition of the cornea, and stability of your refractive error. You must visit an ophthalmogist for detailed check up to satisfy these criteria after which you can undergo lasik surgery. There are no major side effects of laser. Your vision will be restored to normal.

All About Corneal Ulcer

MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Jaipur
All About Corneal Ulcer

Antrior most transparent layer of the eye is called cornea. It is an extremely useful layer for refraction and protection of eye.

Any trauma, foreign body or chemical etc can invade the integrity of this layer and can be invaded by bacteria, fungus or virus, resulting in the corneal ulcer. Sometimes, due to hypoxia induced by contact lenses too can result in a corneal ulcer.

Depending on clinical presentation, a doctor diagnoses the cause of the ulcer and start the therapy. Since the transparency of cornea is very important, a doctor starts very intensive therapy. With repeated frequent checkups if a proper and intensive therapy is not given, the ulcer can progress and can cause collection of pus in the anterior chamber which if not attended properly, can cause the infection to travel into the interior of the eyeball (vitreous chamber) resulting in total blindness. The ulcer can become deeper and lead to perforation of the cornea, causing severe damage to the eye and may require removal of pus (evisceration) or total removal of the eye ball.

Generally, fungal ulcers are more dangerous and occur mostly in rainy season.

It is imperative that a case of corneal ulcer is diagnosed promptly and very intensive treatment proper treatment is given to save the disfigurement of the eye and total irreparable blindness.

At times we have not only to give topical drops but oral therapy has to be given. Injections in the eye have to be given. Culture sensitivity has to be done in severe cases to identify the causative organism.

In extremely severe cases, we have to perform, therapeutic keratoplasty.

Conclusion: Corneal Ulcer is a serious challenging problem with the potentiality to cause total and irreparable blindness and must be attended promptly by a very expert ophthalmologist to save the eye.

Are You at a Risk of Glaucoma? What You Need to Know?

DNB Ophtalmology, MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Are You at a Risk of Glaucoma? What You Need to Know?

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that causes damage to your eye's optic nerve and gets worse over time. The optic nerve is a bundle of millions of nerve fibres which carry visual impulse from the retina at the back of eye to the brain. The increased Eye pressure, called intraocular pressure, can damage the optic nerve and fasten the natural nerve fibre loss. Since nerve cells can't regenerate this damage is permanent and irreversible.

Without treatment, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years. Because most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain from this increased pressure, it is important to see your eye doctor regularly so that glaucoma can be diagnosed early and treated before significant functional visual loss occurs.

If you are over age 40 and have a family history of glaucoma, you should have a complete eye exam with an eye doctor every one to two years. If you have any risk factors, you may need to visit your eye doctor more frequently.

What Are the Symptoms of Glaucoma?

For most people, there are usually few or no symptoms of glaucoma. The first sign of glaucoma is often the loss of peripheral or side vision, which can go unnoticed until late in the disease. This is why glaucoma is often called the "Sneak Thief of Vision" or "Silent Thief of Eye Sight".

If you have any of the following symptoms, seek immediate medical care:

  1. Seeing halos around lights
  2. Vision loss
  3. Redness in the eye
  4. Eye that looks hazy (particularly in infants)
  5. Nausea or vomiting
  6. Pain in the eye
  7. Narrowing of vision (tunnel vision)

Risk Factors:

There are several risk factors, which may lead to glaucoma, such as:

  1. Age of the individual
  2. Ethnicity- African, Caribbean, Hispanics and Asians are at higher risk
  3. Increased eye pressure or IOP History of glaucoma in family or relatives
  4. Presence of Myopia or Hyperopia
  5. Previous eye injuries
  6. Use of steroids- as injections, tablets, eye or ear drops or ointments or protein supplements for muscle building in gyms or inhalers
  7. Previous history of anemia
  8. Individuals conditions affecting blood flow like hypertension, diabetes or high blood sugar, migraine etc are also at risk.

Treatment:

The treatment for glaucoma relies on the nature and seriousness of every case. Generally, glaucoma cannot be totally cured, but it can be controlled. Eye drops, pills, laser strategies, and means of surgery are utilized to maintain and prevent further harm from happening. Talk to your eye doctor to find out if you are at risk of developing glaucoma. If you wish to discuss about any specific eye problem, you can consult a specilized opthamologist and ask a free question.

I think Vision in operated eye is less than normal, in most cases Squinting eye has less vision& you were operated at 20 years of age& at this age improvement of vision is not possible with pleoptic treatment, so there is chances that it may again diverge if vision in operated eye is less. Complete treatment of squint is only possible below 10 years of age where there is chances of 100 percent recovery of binocular vision.

I am having squint in my left eye, Is it possible to correct it through a laser surgery/other?

I am having squint in my left eye, Is it possible to correct it through a laser surgery/other?
Hello lybrate-user. Squint of the eye has multiple causes associated with it. Let me enumerate them in brief: (1) significant difference in the refractive error (glasses power) between both eyes. (2) injury to the eye. (3) cataract/ opacity of the lens in one eye (in pediatric age group specifically). (4) eye having undergone surgery would have the possibility of getting deviated with time. (5) long standing retinal problem in an eye. (6) amblyopia/ lazy eye. It would be possible to correct squint with surgery. This would not be a laser surgery. Also, you must understand the fact that there is a chance that the squint would recur after surgical correction. The duration between the surgery and recurrence could be variable.

My left eye have losing power. What should I do. It may solute by a specs or any need of treatment?

My left eye have losing power. What should I do. It may solute by a specs or any need of treatment?
Hello, How much is the power? Include the following for getting better vision: Vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. DHA is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like wild salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for eyes: Warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. Roll your eyes. Start by looking up and then slowly circle 10 times clockwise and 10 times counterclockwise. Focus. Hold a pen at arm's length, focus your eyes on it, and slowly bring the pen closer until it's about 6 inches away from your nose. Then slowly move it back, keeping your eyes focused on the pen, 10 times in all. Massage your temples. Using your thumb knuckles, massage your temples in small circles, 20 times in one direction and 20 in the other. Repeat the same actions above the mid-point of the eyebrows at the forehead, then below the eyes on both sides of the bridge of the nose. Take a mini-nap. Put your head back, close your eyes, and relax for 3 minutes. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicine which will help you in preventing rather reducing the power of your eyes. Take Physostigma 6/ thrice daily for 1 month. Thereafter, revert back for further guidance.

Hello. Glaucoma is a condition usually caused by raised intra-ocular pressure that affects the field of vision in the eye. I am sure that appropriate medications must have been prescribed to keep the eye pressure under control. Coming to your question, I would like to suggest a few precautions and a few exercises to avoid raising the intra-ocular pressure. Avoid exercises that raise your eye pressure: (1) certain breathing exercises (eg. Pranaayam, valsalva technique-the art of exhaling with closed mouth as well as pinched nose) tend to increase the intra-ocular pressure. This should be avoided strictly by patients who have glaucoma. (2) lifting heavy weight should be avoided. This is because carrying heavy objects (more than 5 to 6 kilograms) would tend to increase the intra-ocular pressure. (3) exercises involving vigorous jumping should be avoided. (4) at times, high altitude (mountain travel) may cause increased intra-ocular pressure. This should preferably be avoided. To conclude, glaucoma can be controlled but to get complete cure is honestly not possible. Likewise, taking adequate care and regular follow-up with your eye specialist should be sufficient to keep it under control. It is sometimes a hereditary problem. Thus, children of parents suffering from glaucoma should get their eyes checked regularly as well. Similarly, grand children should also get their eyes screened to rule out glaucoma or its effects. Hope my suggestions help you, take care, regards.

Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

I am having short sightedness . So what should I do so that my eyes become normal.
There is no medication or food for improving eyesight or to get rid of glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try a. Contact lens b. Lasik laser your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy. As you are not comfortable with contact lens then go for lasik. Lasik is a very easy and painless procedure. If you want to get rid of glasses then go for lasik.
